This signing leaves us with about 2 million in cap room.

Very possible that he gets cut after week 1 and we then add a vet. His salary isn't guarenteed like most vets because he hasn't spent enough time in the league.

I'd like to use the money to resign Kemo, McFadden, or Washington.

Oh well...So much for speculating!!!

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers added a third tight end to their active roster today as they signed veteran tight end Sean McHugh to a one-year deal.

McHugh (6-5, 265) spent the past three seasons with the Detroit Lions on both their active roster and practice squads. He was originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the seventh round (214st overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft out of Penn State. McHugh was cut by the Titans following their 2004 training camp and signed by the Green Bay Packers, where he spent the entire 2004 campaign.

In 25 career games (14 starts), McHugh has 20 receptions for 277 yards (13.9 avg.). He had his best season in 2007 for the Lions, playing in 15 games (12 starts) and making 17 catches for 252 yards (14.8 avg.).

And another tall one... 6'5".

I thought Starks was going to be our secret weapon, ala the Fridge, as the third TE.:D

It's been what, at least a week since we signed a castoff TE with little to no future in this league?

We were due.

Sherrod sucked and Boyd was cut because of a damaged shoulder.

This guy better know how to block.

I'm just waiting for another retread return guy. I can't believe we're really going to use guys good at other things (Mendenhall, Moore and Holmes) to actually return kicks. How can anyone do two things like that?

Thank you!

We sign a TE for the vaunted 3 TE sets we are always using!

We could have signed an upgrade over Mahan for the interior line generally and possibly the center position specifically.

Sheesh!:(

Speaking of Willie Anderson......why didn't we look at him?

Adam Schefter
Veteran Anderson gets first taste of free agency

Never having experienced free agency during his 12-year NFL career, Pro Bowl offensive tackle Willie Anderson is experiencing it now.

Anderson flew back to Cincinnati on Wednesday after visiting with the Baltimore Ravens, who passed Anderson on his physical. Now Anderson will mull the opportunities of playing in San Diego or Tampa Bay, each of whom offer options as well.

In San Diego, Anderson might be playing on the best team of the three, with the best chance of winning a Super Bowl.

In Tampa Bay, which seems to bid on every high-profile free agent that becomes available, Anderson could help shore up a line with some questions at the tackle position.

In Baltimore, which has the greatest need along the offensive line of any of the three, Anderson would get to play his former Bengals teammates twice a season.

Three interesting options, with three interesting choices. Anderson’s agent, Terry Bolar, said his client would like to make a decision before the week is through. But after 12 seasons in Cincinnati, Anderson is enjoying the recruiting process and the search to find a new home where he can lay it on the line.

I think it's a valid attempt at getting better. It's obvious that Spaeth can't block and you need more than 2 TEs. Plus, this guy might be able to block on the move.

McHugh played FB at Penn State. He could run and catch. I think he had a 2000 yard rushing season.
in high school. He's versatile. McHugh can actually backup Miller as an H back, something Spaeth seems unable to do.

This was a necessary signing because the steelers like 2 TE sets. They absolutely needed a backup there. I just wish they had McHugh at the beginning of camp because he may have pushed Davis off the roster. McHugh was a decent lead blocker at Penn State, i haven't seen him play much with Detroit so i'm not sure how good he is at blocking as a TE, but I'm guessing he's at least in the Jerame Tuman category as a blocker.

Yes, he did have a 2000 yard season. Started all 4 years as Chagrin Falls' RB. Man amongst boys in those days... everybody has caught up now.

That's pretty good stuff there.

It's amazing we pick up a guy off the waiver wire and he sounds as good or better than our current 3rd round investment in Matt Spaeth.

Makes me wonder why using such a premium draft choice on a career backup TE was ever a consideration for this team. I know they threw a bone at Arians, but that's rediculous.

And that dream would be a pure CRACK PIPE dream.
Colbert is the ONLY moron who would pay a back-up 7 million.
Even IF a team wanted Starks as a starter on their line, they're not paying 7 million to Starks.
He's not Hutchinson or Pace or Jones or Faneca.

Although, I didn't think a team out there would give up anything more than a bag of hamster phlegm for the human turnstile Mahan but that theory was disproved earlier this week.

Hmmmmmmmmm...........

Well I dont have a problem with this move. We do need lineman, but we dont know whats up with bentley and anderson. Maybe they are asking too much or have a bad medical report? I am sure we are not the only team that needs lineman and no one has signed them yet that should tell you something. We put ourselves in a bind w/ Starks. I did not like starks at all he was totally immobile, but this year he supposedly came into camp in excellent shape and he never really got a shot to show it off which I dont understand. Its like the team doesnt mind eating his ridiculous contract. I highly doubt we will be able to trade him now, and even if we do who do we have behind him? I believe he is the backup and both LT and RT so that makes him pretty valuable as far as depth goes.

Anyways we need another TE in case Miller or Spaeth go down and if this guy can be a lead blocker and possibly replace carey davis that would be great. If he is a blocking TE that basically makes him a lineman anyways so I dont understand the problem, If he was a FB before he probably likes contact so he could be good on ST as well which is another bonus. My question is how good is this guy really?

CornerBlitz
09-04-2008, 03:44 AM
He has a GREAT yards per catch average for a TE, much higher than Miller's or Spaeth's so it sounds like his versatility plus his pass catching ability might be a good deal.

We also didn't have a backup for Davis. McHugh fits the bill, is unglamorous but exactly what's required if we're to run the 2 TE, single back offense that Arians wants to run.

I liked McHugh at PSU, and I agree that it was necessary move; there's no way the Steelers would go into a game with only two tight ends active.

I asked the question about McHugh on a Lion's board...this is what I got back...

Martz used him as an H-Back the last couple of years and practiced at FB this year.

Decent special teamer with versatility. He's not going to do anything special, but will do the grunt work. Probably nothing more than depth for you guys.

He was our best FB in camp this year, so I was kind of thinking they'd find a spot for him .

Before this preseason, I always thoguht his natural position was TE. He never showed much as a blocker at TE, but was able to slip out for some routes and had pretty decent hands for a big guy. Definitely if hes playing TE he shouldn't be more than a 3rd stringer.

At FB, he seeemd like a better blocker to me, than eh was at TE, which makes sense as they require totally different blocking skillsets. He really was laying a licking into people, albeit third-fifth stringers.

With his height, it seems obvious that this was a move to bolster the Steelers' offseason basketball team...
