View Full Version : Hines' Smiling After Drops

I didn't see this discussed anywhere so I'll bring it up:
Hines Ward is one of my favorite All-Time Steelers, but him smiling yesterday after dropping a pass pissed me off. One play can be the difference in a game. Dropping a pass that would have picked up a first down is letting down your team mates. Him smiling is really no different than Marvel Smith smiling after giving up a sack or Anthony Smith smiling after giving up a big pass.
I noticed later in the game, when it was appearant the Steeles were in real danger of losing, he didn't smile after another drop. Maybe it occured to him he shouldn't have smiled after the first one...

Hines IMO has done plenty in his career and for the Steelers where him smiling doesn't bother me. There's nothing he can do about it, I know it and you know he's pissed at himself.

Hine Ward gets a pass for smiling, in my book.

But Hines is always smiling. I guess sometimes I just see it as his way of letting it go and moving on from a bad play so it doesnt get in his head.

Hines's smile was one of those "I can't believe I dropped that" smiles. A kick myself is the ass smile.
It Hines' way.
I think it's that way pretty uch whenever you see an athlete smile after he or she fucks up. It's not that they don't care or think it's funny. It's more like an I'm embarrassed smile or an it even happens to me smile.

damn....I guess he should have gutted himself over the missed pass....
He shoulda pulled out a terrible towel taken off his helmet and cried uncontrollably into it.
Hines can smile all he wants. He knows, and we all know he should have made the catch. His reaction to it is irrelevant IMO.

Hines Ward is one of the toughest SOB's ever. He often gets blasted and still holds onto the ball. He is without peer when it comes to blocking and lays out DB's whenever he gets a chance. His receiving skills are generally excellent. He is one of my all time favorite Steelers. If there is one person on this team I will cut slack for smiling when the Steelers are behind, it is Ward. Give me players with his attitude any time!!!

It's a GAME they are playing out there. He's the only one with the right attitude. Smile with each play, each hit and each score. Act like you've been there before. Act like you ENJOY what you are being paid well to do. And he does it well. He takes the hits and delivers. Ever see his face after he flattens some unsuspecting DB? He's smiling! Why now does it bother you?

Right, and had Nate Washington been all smiles after a drop, that would have been irrelevant? After all he knows he should have made the catch, right?
Yes, it's Hines Ward, but during the game, to me, he's #86. And Nate Washington is #85. A dropped pass is a dropped pass regardless of who drops it. It doesn't hurt the TEAM any less if Hines Ward drops it.
Again, late in the game, he wasn't smiling after another drop. This to me suggests he was cocky early in the game, humbled later in the game.

Money or not it's still a game. You act as if somehow you are directly impacted by a competition. The only way I see that being the case is if you are betting on the game, in which case you have only yourself to blame.

First off, I can't believe this is what you chose to take away from yesterdays game.
Second off, I believe if you would talk to a sports psychologist about how to react to a bad play or a mistake, I am pretty sure he would tell you it's important to stay positive. Dont beat yourself up.
Now like has been mentioned before, I really don't think that smile was "Hahhahaha! I dropped that ball. Too funny!"
And finally, #86 as you refer to him smiles 95% of the time. After laying someone out, after getting layed out, after making a TD, and even after dropping a pass.
It doesn't bother one tiny bit. In fact, the times I don't see Hines smiling, i worry there is something wrong with him.

Star players who have proven themselves get more slack than 4th or 5th WRs.....Hines does enjoy himself out there....early in the game he might smile after a drop, probably for the reasons already mentioned (he is internally slapping himself for missing one) not a cocky attitude....later in a game he is losing, he knows smiling would be inappropriate so he doesn't....
I would rather he smile and get over the drop and move on to the next play than kick himself and be over thinking the next time a ball comes his way....

just like being the guitar player....just like being a soap star, comedian, ESPN guy/girl....with more $$, the pressure is ramped up more.....missing a chord change at Flora-Bama is a lot less stressful than at LiveAid, but it is still, just a job.
it's "entertainment", people.
if all organized sport went away tonight, the planet would still function.
however, "we" being fans of the Steelers, and very dedicated ones at that, take this entertainment very seriously.

and if anyone can get a pic of Hines and Manny Sanguillen together, how cool would that be?

It does make a difference...Hines almost always smiles...he is known for that....he smiles to let the defense know they did not get the best of him....and there is a difference to his smiles...he has a different look when he drops a pass than when he lays out a defender or makes a big play...

All the WR's have been having a case of the dropsies. I say bring back stick em.
Lester Hayes noticed the lanky, veteran receiver with the shaggy hair strolling toward him, but he couldn't figure out what Fred Biletnikoff wanted. The year was 1977, and Hayes was merely a rookie cornerback for the Oakland Raiders, a player hoping to make a big impression in his first preseason game. Biletnikoff was a future Hall of Famer, one who casually dabbed a gooey, brownish-yellow substance on Hayes' fingers.
Former Raiders defensive back Lester Hayes says he became a "mere mortal" after Stickum was banished by the NFL.
"Try that, rookie," Biletnikoff said before walking away and leaving Hayes confounded. "I thought," said Hayes recently, "that Fred had put axle grease in my hands."
There are days when Hayes still looks back at his introduction to Stickum and laughs at what it did for his career.

It is OK to smile after you knock a defender the fukk out, but personally, it pi$$es me off when Hines smiles after dropping a pass in a big spot. Earlier in the season, he dropped two 3rd down passes against Denver and smiled after each of those as well. Considering how much he gets paid to catch passes, he makes me want to knock that smile off his face, but that's just me.
The fact of the matter is Hines has dropped WAY to many passes over the past two seasons. You combined that with the fact that he appears to have lost a step, he has become a very average receiver.

The bottom line is that Hines has been dropping more passes than we have become accustomed to seeing him drop and he is not getting as much separation underneath as he used to.
If he was playing at a Probowl level, you probably would not hear complaining about the drops and the dumbass smiles that ensue.

Hines has 66 catches this season, 677 yards and 7 TD's. He also missed two games to injury. I can't find stats on drops anywhere, but Hines leads the team in catches, is second on the team in yards and is tied for the team lead in TD catches, and he is still throwing hits to boot. All that in the same year his QB is having a season for the Steelers record books. If that is your version of disappointing, especially with some of the playcalling and O-line play this year, I would love to know what your version of quality is. I would agree the loss to the Jags is frustrating, and that wide open drop that killed a drive no doubt hurt. But his smiling after drops is the least of this teams' problems.

I suppose he is having a decent year, but far from a quality one considering the standard he has set for himself. He has zero 100yd receiving games and his longest catch of the year is only 25yds.
His play is slipping and dropping passes does not warrant a smile given those circumstances.

Far as I'm concerned, Hines is simply being Hines, and the stats bear that out.
For his career, including this season, Hines has averaged 71 catches for 868 yards and 6.5 TD's. He has only caught over 70 balls five times, and went over a thousand 4 times, and two of those were 1003, and 1004. His only real big stand out year was 2002, with 112 catches for 1329 yards and 12 TD's. His longest TD averages 55.5, and he's below that this year. Also over his career he has averaged 12.2 per catch and is averaging 10.3 this year, his lowest ever.
I'm not sure exactly what it is you expect, or the standard that you mention, but he is having a typical season for Hines Ward. He may not have the same wheels as 5 years ago, but he never really had wheels to begin with. His game has always been physical play and possession catches. You get the occasional huge play out him as well. Yeah he dropped a couple. All WR's do it. So he smiled after a drop. Big deal. Hines smiles all the damn time. I figure you'd be more upset that the defense got ass fucked or that the o-line continues to sacrifice Ben like he's a pristine virgin at a satanists convention. This team has bigger problems than Hines Ward, and they've cost us a whole lot more this season.
It makes me laugh that we have a thread about this when our O-Line and D-Line were manhandled yesterday.

I suppose I'm in the minority here, but I'd have to agree with Fist and Punx: To me, when your quarterback is struggling to get in rhythm, early in a tight game against a good opponent with a playoff berth at stake, dropping potential first-down passes is no laughing matter.

Look, Hines with a Smile or without is not our problem. He has played good football this year just like he always does. I actually think Holmes needs to pick it up a bit. First round pick, I know he got hurt but he needs to be catching 6 and 80 yards a game and he is not. Hines is just fine and can smile any time he wants. That same smile cracks my ass up everytime he does it after laying some jack ass I hate out on his back. Smile away ward and keep making the plays.

no, because I'm not a mind reader. I was simply pointing out the ridiculousness of your post....while mocking you with one similarly silly. I'm stunned you couldn't figure that out.
Not a mind reader. LOL. Yes, since I always write like that, it's obvious how you could misinterpret my being ridiculously sarcastic in that instance. Very tough to figure out.
Good God, you are a simpleton. At least you're entertaining, though.

Good thing his smile prepared him to not overthink that second drop later in the game.
I suppose I'm in the minority here, but I'd have to agree with Fist and Punx: To me, when your quarterback is struggling to get in rhythm, early in a tight game against a good opponent with a playoff berth at stake, dropping potential first-down passes is no laughing matter.
Hines smiling is not the same as laughing....

5 pages about Hine's smiling.
Yeah, I'm cracking up. Hines has been smiling through his entire career...he had a couple of drops Sunday...he also makes catches 9 out of 10 other receivers would miss because they feel the hit coming, and unlike many WRs is capable of throwing huge blocks.
Anyone who saw his post-game comments knows he was anything but happy with his performance.
Smiling or not, Hines is NOT our problem.

But Hines is always smiling. I guess sometimes I just see it as his way of letting it go and moving on from a bad play so it doesnt get in his head.
thats it.......I think its worse when he doesn't smile ..thats not him...Smith and Smith I have never seen with a smile on the field...so it would not be the same thing..if they smiled after a bad play..

Just in some clarification...
1. Hines is NOT always smiling. He didn't smile after his 2nd drop against the Jags.
2. It's normal to smile after making a good play, to smile after a bad play suggests he is taking it lightly. The fact that he didn't smile after the second drop in a more critical period of the game only reinforces that he took the first drop lightly.
3. I thought the Steelers had been playing sub-par football for several weeks and had for the most part shrugged it off (as had most of the posters on this board - see Jags game predictions). Maybe this will help you understand my problem with Hines smiling after his drop.

Maybe this will help you understand my problem with Hines smiling after his drop.
that is where I think you are wrong...I don't think he is taking the drops lightly...I think it is just his way to deal with it.....Lambert's way was to cuss and smack himself in the helmet....both are effective imo.....

OK, why then did he not smile after his second drop in a more critical period of the game?

Sadly, it no longer mattered at that point. As much as his smiling after his first dropped irritated me, his failure to smile after his second drop amused me.

My problem is Hines stunning inability to get deep, his LONGEST reception is 25 yards and we must constantly set him in motion to beat the corner at the LOS. We need a true #1 WR and Holmes is not it, I think he will prove to be a great #2 WR but not a #1 guy. We need some size and speed at WR instead of the mix amn match smurfs we currently run out each week, I seriously doubt we scare anyone at WR and we have a season long catch of only 45 yards.

I think a big part of that has absolutely nothing to do with the WR's, if you want to throw deep, you need time to throw deep and that's not happening.
Indy won the Super Bowl last year with smurf WR's, NE won a few with smurf WR's, we won the Super Bowl with smurf WR's.

LMAO, Sluzilla just bitch slapped everyone that said Ward's been dropping passes all year, what did he have 3? LMAO!
The guy is a big game WR, he average right around a TD a game in the post-season.
If you guys are pissed that he smiles after a drop, why aren't you pissed that Tomlin's expression doesn't change when we are playing like shit?
Bitch-slapped? LOL.
First of all, lending much credence to a subjective stat from some unofficial website is a stretch to begin with; however, since it was used to prove some type of argument that Ward hasn't been dropping passes, let's at least try to get its "facts" straight, shall we?
You might want to re-read post #76 again and click on that first link, which notes five drops (not three) through 12 games. And I'm sure you'd agree Hines had two drops for sure against Jacksonville, and one at the very least against New England. That would put his total at eight through 14 games, two from the high of ten by Reggie Bush, and tied for sixth worst in the league (according to post #86). That's right, sixth worst in the NFL.
Excellent point. Continue to slap yourselves silly.
And maybe Tomlin should start smiling when the Steelers play like shit. That'll help.

I'm not trying to bash you here, Blount, but, we all know that Hines isn't a DEEP threat---he never has been. Santonio is a hybrid deep threat, like Steve Smith, Santana Moss and even Randle El...
I do agree that it wouldn't be bad to have a BIG WR (ie. Chad Johnson); but, as stated by Coryea, we have won w/ the smallish WR's that we have.
Here's the REAL issue. We don't run enough "trick plays" to keep opposing D's off guard---and when we do it's a stupid ass reverse on the goalline (it actually worked on the 2pt. conversion this week).

actually it said 3 last night...they must've just added the 2 from JAX...
btw...Hines only has 12 games played...he didn't play in 9/30 or 10/7 games...
so he has 5 total this year...so he still isn't on that drop chart...

Hey Dr. Phil: Specifically, in your infinite wisdom, how does calling you a tough guy make me feel threatened?
No, of course they should correct their mistakes. However, I'd consider the original information that you provided to be unreliable and in fact wrong, which in this case, it happened to be. This seems to be a difficult concept for you and some others.
If Hines put in a half-assed effort and went through the motions, then his smiling would annoy me 100 x more than it does already. However, since you won't find a more fiery competitor in the NFL, it only annoys me a little bit. But I'm a poor loser

Actually, if you reread (I know this may be a difficult task) the thread starting with post #118, the whole "reliable" argument began with my questioning of the particular information which was indeed incorrect. Hines is always smiling. He loves the game, this is what makes him so good. He plays with passion, a love of the game; he actually enjoys playing the game. He plays hard out there on every play whether he is catching the ball, running a route, or blocking for someone. Seeing him smiling after those drops this past week doesn't bother me because I know he busts his ass out there and plays every down with a fire like it's the winning drive of the SuperBowl. I just wish every player played like him, especially the O-Line. I think some needs to light a fire under their asses.

Hines is a future HOFer. He can smile anytime during a game. Hines knows those catches should have been made, but he held onto the TD grab when we needed it. I expect to see a few more smiles from Hines tonight against the Rams.
