Hampton says massive Rogers poses big problems

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Pittsburgh Steelers nose tackle Casey Hampton never sits in on the offensive line's meetings but, if he did, he knows what he would say this week.

Hampton would quickly issue this warning: Two of you will be needed to shut down 350-pound defensive lineman Shaun Rogers, who was traded to the Cleveland Browns after seven seasons with Detroit.

Hampton is convinced the 6-foot-4 Rogers could be the NFL's best defensive lineman if he'd put his mind to it. His former University of Texas teammate didn't always do that in Detroit, which won only 10 games combined the last two seasons.

Despite Rogers' buildup as one of the toughest linemen in the NFL to block, he never had more than seven sacks in a season with Detroit. Rogers' conditioning and inconsistent play helped persuade the Lions to trade him.

"In Detroit, man, a lot of times he would shut it down — he'll tell you, he gets frustrated out there losing all the time," Hampton said Wednesday. "I think he shut it down a couple of times. But you look at his track record, early in the season he always comes to play and he's ready to play and if they're winning, he's going to continue."

Hampton and Rogers are offseason neighbors in Texas and, even though Hampton has made the last four Pro Bowls, he believes Rogers could be even better.

Hampton is certain Rogers will want to play Sunday night, when the Steelers (1-0) could open a two-game AFC North lead over the Browns (0-1) by winning in Cleveland for the 10th consecutive time.

"No question about it, he'll be ready to play. He can play, man, it's all about when he wants to play. When he wants to play, nobody can stop him," Hampton said. "When he gives it up and puts his mind to it, I think he's the best in the league."

The Browns gave Rogers a giant contract ($42 million over six years, with $20 million guaranteed) that was more befitting of his size than his production with Detroit, 29 sacks in seven seasons.

Rogers is athletic and, despite his size, was seen dunking at a charity basketball game last spring. In his first game with Cleveland, Rogers had no sacks but was credited with four tackles in a 28-10 loss to Dallas on Sunday.

"We talk all the time," Hampton said. "He's just happy to have the opportunity to win. He's been in Detroit all those years losing."

Steelers center Justin Hartwig will be the primary blocker against Rogers. The two opposed each other once in the NFL, in 2004, and in college when Hartwig played for Kansas, a 51-16 Texas win in 2000.

"He is a massive guy and takes up blockers," Hartwig said. "You watch film and there's several plays a game when he just shuts the play down completely all by himself. That's going to be our challenge, being able to slow things down so we can get the ball carrier past the line of scrimmage."

Without Rogers on the Browns' line, the Steelers rushed for a combined 365 yards in beating their rivals twice last season. Willie Parker ran for 109 yards in a 35-7 season-opening win at Cleveland and 105 yards as the Steelers won 31-28 in Pittsburgh.

"But it's still Cleveland, so we know they're going to play hard," Parker said.

Yes Hampton is saying the politically correct thing, but come on. If Rodgers outplays Hampton I would be very surprised. Big Snack just worry about crushing the Brownies OL on Sunday night. Also, you forgot to mention how Rodgers likes to take plays off too. This will be the first big man test for Hartwig. Hope he is up for the task.

All we have to worry about is him having access to our postgame buffet.

Dallas didn't seem to have any trouble dealing with him.

I don't know about that - Dallas' offensive line had 2-3 blockers on him, and I think he still got credited with a sack didn't he? Or did his pressure cause the DE to get the sack instead?

What I watched of that game Romo had time to get a manicure most every pass.

For every game where he actually has an impact he has six where he does squat.

So what if the Steelers have to double team him? The Browns don't have a scary pass rush so doubling Rodgers is no big deal.

I epect the STeelers to use the same strategy they used against Ted Washington. They tried to push him to the ground on every play, even when the action went away and Washington simply got tired from getting up after every play. I think Rodgers will be a factor in the 1st quarter and sucking wind in the 2nd half.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Rodgers sucking wind by the 2nd quarter.

I watched the whole game (although it didn't have 100% of my attention) and Rogers looked like he wanted to be eating donuts.

Romo could have snapped the ball, set up a lawn chair, sat down, ordered a drink from the bar, slowly sipping it while hitting on some ugly Browns fans and once he finished his drink got up and thrown a pass. There was zero pass rush through most of the game.

Everytime I paid specific attention to Rogers, he was being dealt with single-handedly by the Cowboys. He didn't seem to be getting any push and didn't seem to care.

Now things may be different on Sunday night, but if the same Rogers shows up we have nothing to worry about.

Dallas' o-line is stupid big.

We should assume this is his one game out of 7, first with a national audience, where he'll go all out.

Tony had time to take a shit, read the paper, and wipe before any of the browns' d-line even got close to him.

hehe, i said shit, wipe, and browns in the same sentence....:D

Nary a concern from my perspective. The Browns know whats coming. Dont be surprised to see us lay 42 on that scoreboard Sunday night.

If we need to worry about fatboy, cool. We gameplan around that. Cleveland has Santonio, Heath, Parker and Ben to worry about. I "aint" even gotta mention the Lurkin Launchin Blockin Assassin some call Hines. Ever heard of a safety or DB with his head on a swivel ? Just ask Brodney Poole. Matter of fact i believe Hines has tagged at least half the Stains secondary with a snotmaker. Id be disappointed if he didnt catch another. Win or lose, THATS somethin id pay to see.

Ward's gotta hold the record for decleating more Defensive Players than anyone in the history of the NFL. I mean he's knocked LBs and DBs of games. I even recall him knocking a DL out one time (might have Roye when he was with the Browns.)

Hampton sounds like he's trying to bring overweight players big in style.

As someone may have said, the only problem with Rogers is him getting into the Steelers buffet ;)

That and him taking a step, leaving a massive hole, and one of our receivers or backs falling into it

When he's winning he can play, when he's losing, he's lazy. So he'll be lazy by our 4th possession at the latest.
