DVE is doing a radio-athon from Children's Hospital trying to raise money for a new addition to the hospital. Ben just called in and said he'll give DVE a signed jersey and at the end of the day anyone that donates a 100 dollars or more will be in the raffle for the jersey. Then said he was calling the donation hotline now. They didn't say what his donation was though.

I just thought it was cool that he took time out of his morning routine to call the radio station and make that offer himself, they didn't call him and ask, he was listening and decided to offer an autographed jersey.

They just said he made a huge donation, but they didn't know if they were allowed to say how much.

Just thought I'd share.

Hell ... THAT is going to get people out there calling in. Who wouldn't pay just $100 dollars for a jersey signed by Ben?

Good for him. I think it is great when athletes give back. Probably wont get much press.

I like seeing athletes do this kind of stuff, especially one of our own. Is Ben still doing that thing where he donates $10,000 to a local police or fire station in every city they play in?

I think you are misunderstanding the offer. I think Ben is giving ONE signed jersey that will be put into a raffle. Everyone who gives $100 or more will be put into that raffle.

Not that it isn't still a good thing. Just thought I would clarify. Good for Ben!

I believe so. I think it is specifically for police dogs.

Classy move by Ben. It's great to see and read about this kind of stuff athletes do to give back.

I think Ben changed significantly after his accident. Before he was still a great guy, just a young care free guy. After the accident he seems to have grown up and has a great new outlook on life, we are lucky to have a guy of his quality representing the Steelers, as a man and as a QB.

A couple of seasons ago I emailed John Steigerwald and asked him the story behind Ben always sporting a PA State Police hat in the lockeroom. He wrote back and told me Ben was close to the family of Trooper Pokorny who you might remember was murdered. Steigerwald wrote that Ben does tons of stuff in support of the State Police that few even know about. Having had three uncles who were police officers this really struck a chord with me. Ben has matured many times over since coming to the Burgh and we are indeed very lucky to have him given all the negative stuff we often hear about pro athletes.
