View Full Version : A tip of the cap to Arians

Was anybody else as pleasantly surprised as I was at Arians' 2nd and 10 call late in the 4th quarter when the Steelers were trying to run out the clock...19 yard pass to Miller...I did not see that one coming...although I have seen other teams do this,. Perhaps I sign of things to come.
Looked like Ben had the option to throw if it was there, if not, pull it down and run.
That play, the one Willie broke for the long first with 2:42 and change and the long conversion from 2nd and 10 at the 2 were the three plays that broke the Browns and will haunt them until the last game of the season.

Yep, I've got to give credit where credit is due, that was the perfect play call in that situation.

Slowly building up support around here and earning respect is Arians. Conservative lost just as many games as aggressive did. So why not go with aggressive......make THEM stop you. Dont help them stop you.

I wanted them to run a naked bootleg on the 4th and 1 at the end of the game. I thought maybe they'd leak a TE to the left and give Ben the option to throw a short dump pass or run it. It's not like an incompletion there stops the clock any different than coming up short on a 4th and 1 run. It's a high percentage pass and I think you would have caught the Browns being aggressive to the run.
I did love the call on 2nd and 10 though. Perfect play call.

I told my neighbor when we came out for that series that Cowher would have gladly ran 3 running plays and punted. I told him hopefully Tomlin grows a set and goes for the kill. Couldnt have asked for a better outcome. The 4th down at the very end surprised me. They played it safe hoping there wasnt a blocked FG or whatever.
I agree with the final 4th down playcall. A blocked or even a missed FG could have been disastrous.
However, I'd have tried a double reverse like they did earlier with Santonio, perhaps with Hines. Of course that increases the odds of a fumble so in the end... good safe play call. Didn't do anything for yards, but did burn a couple seconds and left the Brownies with 74 yards and 28 seconds.
Good odds.

I don't mean to try to slow down the Arians fan base but...
Sometimes the guy is aggressive to a fault and at other points he is stupidly conservative.
Opting to keep the ball in Ben's hand on that 3rd and 6 against the Jags enters my mind.

Lord knows we blast Arians' enough when he makes what appear to us to be stupid calls. Thought I would give credit where credit is due...and who knows, maybe he learned something from that call in the Jags game...

No doubt Arians deserves credit here. He called a good game and seemed to not let the weather force him into being overly conservative.

As shown by all the passing plays. Normally when it's that rainy or windy you expect them to keep to the ground.

I thought BA did pretty good. Some of the crucial plays were great calls.

Definately had some good playcalling on both sides of the ball.

Arians has been good the whole time. Sure he made a couple bad calls in some games but give me a break, don't they all.

I tip my hat to BA. That call in particular and the game plan as a whole.

That is 2 straight weeks Arians called a good game. Hope this continues all season.

The only play call that burns me from this season is the end of the first half in the Houston game. We get the ball with 1:45 left, so I thought, cool we get to try the no huddle. Nope, 1st down run. 2nd Down run. Oh I guess we're going to run out the clock with a big lead. Nope, Pass on 3rd down and Ben gets hit and hurts his knee. That play could have ended his season with no need to try to go for a first down with the half looming and a 3 score advantage.
That play call was far worse than any in the playoffs that this board doesn't seem to like. A week when NE and TEN lost their starters, we could have easily joined them. Luckily Ben didn't get hurt seriously.

I thought the play calling wasn't too bad, but it wasn't executed at its peak. I really think we should have taken it to the Browns. There is something that doesn't click for the Steelers offense on Sunday night road games. The weather certainly did not help.

You have to think that the Browns players were really amped for this game. They probably brought all they had to this game because its been sooooooooo long since theyve beaten us. Not to mention this was a must-win situation cuz they didnt wanna start out 0-2 with a tougher road ahead. Their best still isnt good enough.

I liked the bomb on 2nd and 10 from deep in the end zone. There were some wet dawgs in the pound with their tails between their legs after that play. You couldn´t even hear the wind blow after that one. LOL
BTW, who´s that chick on your avatar? Link please?

Their best still isnt good enough.
That is the key point. The Brownies laid it all on the line and they still couldn't beat us.

Exactly. Someone here (Staxx) wanted us to RUN, RUN, PASS - all night. Very good game plan on Sunday night, Mr. Arians.
I pray that you have a plan for SUNDAY against the Iggles. If he puts us in the position to win on Sunday - I foresee a DEEP playoff run.

I thought BA did a great job the other night. I did think we needed to resurrect the Gay Play of the Day with the wide receiver screen on the goal line, which was just a mess. Now Andy Reid did it last night to Westbrook for a touchdown but it was really well executed. Same with the screen(s) on the goal line against the Texans. That's the one part of the field that we seem to still make some sketchy calls.
I think the roll out pass would have gone for 6 to end the game (and give me the cover against a Brownie fan).

if Arians ever calls a 4th and 16 hook and ladder for 6 yards with a minute left on a potentially winning drive...i'll personally escort him out...
that was a shit call by the eagles OC last night...

Agreed - the Game Planning and play calling has been very good over the first two games. Two games as season does not make. It's a great start though.
About the possiblity of gadget plays there at the end; I say no-go, unless they were properly set up. They work well when they are properly set up - and that requires some for thought. Long drives are where those work, the set up and execution. Down towards the end in a possession battle, I don't deem them as good options. (unless of coarse they were set up first)

Yea, I thought the play calling on that last drive was pathetic.

I can only assume the Eagles thought they were going to see an all out blitz and wanted to get rid of the ball quickly. Shitty call either way, but that's the only reason I can rationalize it.
