I asked this question in the middle of another thread, but decided to give it its own.

Were the Terrible Towels the first official twirly thing in the NFL? All of sports? I remember years ago Dolphin fans would wave white hanky-type thinga-ma-jigs. Where exactly do the Terrible Towels stand in the sports twirly thing timeline?

The first in Football, but not the first in Futbol. Cope got the idea from international soccer where he saw them waved.

Everyone, and I mean everyone who is a fan of any sport should know this story (and maybe you do), I am sure it has been posted here numerous times and half the members probably have it printed out in some capacity (I know I do) but, here's the link:

No, the horrible hankie was prior to the Terrible Towel, but could not stand the test of time as the TT.
And also dolphins fans did not really wave their hankies as Steeler fans twirl the towel, it was a dainty feminine sort of flicking thing they did.

I am very familiar with the story...my question has to do with whether or not the TT was the first twirly type thingy at sporting events. This type of thing is everywhere nowadays, but did we do it first?

The post above indicates that soccer may have started the towel waving...

I remember when the Raiders responded with twirling black socks.

the Minnesota Twins had "homer hankies" during the 1987 World Series.

The Dolphins hankey was first, but as Sheffield said, people gave it up because first, you shook it with a wrist flicking motion and second waving a white flag is a sign of surrender.

So, the first "twirly thing"? Yes.
First thing to be waved in the stands? No.

I thought about this when I went to the Mets/Cubs game a couple weeks ago, they gave out 'Mets Rally Towels'. EVERYONE does something like that now. Like the Rats had the 'Talon Towel' a while back. Fricken hilarious.

What does it matter? Ours is the only one that matters. The rest are expressions of latent unnatural sexual orientation, and should be dealt with accordingly.

You think that was sad, and don't know how many can remember but in the late 70's with the stains never ending effort to compete with the Steelers they had this brown pleather looking purse they would wave i.e "The browns Bag"

At the birth of the Terrible Towel, we were told to buy gold or black towels and bring them to the game. Of course I had to run out and buy a towel for the upcoming game. A lot of them showed up and they were just gold (yellow) b/c the official towels weren't out yet.

Didn't want to have a plain towel so I embroidered Steelers across the towel and have used it ever since. It has been through two Super Bowls in the '70s and and our fifth one with Seattle. It stays on my TV for every game and is over 30 years old.

I don't have a digital camera so I had to fold it to fit into my scanner so you will be able to see my perfect embroidery. ;) Just part of STEELERS shows.

Well last season Miami should have re-issued the hanky!
Lord knows they should have surrendered!
