RAVENS SNIFFING AROUND SCHOTTENHEIMER

The Baltimore Sun reports that the Ravens have had some preliminary discussions with Marty Schottenheimer about the team's head-coaching vacancy.

"There's been some discussion but nothing substantive," said Schottenheimer's agent, Trace Armstrong.

Marty would make sense for a Ravens team that needs a kick in the pants from a veteran coach who knows how to get results. The question, however, is whether the players will accept him. When, for example, Schottenheimer became the head coach of the Redskins in 2001, Deion Sanders opted for retirement over playing Martyball.

And as left tackle Jonathan Ogden said recently, "I would not want to play for Marty personally. Nothing against the man, I just know his style. He had Bruce Smith doing the Oklahoma drill when he was with the Redskins."

The X-factor, obviously, is Ray Lewis. If he chooses not to accept Schottenheimer, it could end up being a nightmare.

But for how long will the Ravens allow themselves to be held hostage by a player who thinks he runs the team? Though Lewis can still bring it between the white lines, there's a certain point where the headaches he creates outweigh the body aches that he can cause.

& that right there is the problem. If this team wasn't so full a bunch of bleeding pussy primadonas, they wouldn't underacheive so fucking much. How great would it be for Marty to come in & dump Ray-Ray? LMFAO!

Let me make it clear that the part I love is that they will let Ray Ray decide who the coach will be. If they pass on Marty because he doesn't meet the approval of Ray Lewis, then they are idiots.

Say what you want about Marty but he does find a way to make a team better, at least during the regular season.

The only way they would do better with a Martyball coach is by getting Cowher. At least he got past the playoffs a couple of times and won one, but yeah, Shottenheimer would whip them into shape.

I agree w/ you Tobe...and I see what LMP is saying as well...

Marty Sr. would be an upgrade to the Raisins organization; but, overall I don't want to see it because it makes it REAL hard in our division. Especially with...prepare for the poop storm...the Stains rising from the slums...and the Bungles high powered O.

I'd put Dick Vermeil on that list also. He'd make the Rat's a better team also.

Vermeil is not really a Martyball coach though, is he?

I think Marty would be a better fit with Atlanta.

Couldn't agree more. Why not make Ray Ray a player/HC? Really, his win total would match his 268 solo tackles next year, even if it is all make believe.

No matter what coach takes over is going to have a tough time.
It appears the following will not be back: Rolle (retire-disease), Ogden(retire), Suggs (free Agent), Mason (free Agent), Heap (i keep hearing he is trade bait due to injuries), Wilcox (free agent - heaps back up), Pryce (free Agent, i think)

Also the age of : Pryce (if not free agent), Ray Ray, McCallister, Greg, McNair, McGhee, and Reed. They have all been injury prone recently and playing for a long time. There only youth is Ngata, Landry (who is average) and Troy Smith (still think no better than Boller)

New coach will have a hard time rebuilding that team between the attitudes and the abilities.

Marty better hurry up because Falcons owner Mr.Blank just hired a new GM on Saturday.

Dimitroff era underway
By Steve Wyche | Monday, January 14, 2008, 11:46 AM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Newly hired GM Thomas Dimitroff arrived in Atlanta Monday to begin trudging through the multitude of tasks to try to fix the Falcons.

There won’t be any media availability until Tuesday so you might not hear much from him until then.

Dimitroff will spend the day getting a lay of the land and meeting some of the people in the organization. He hadn’t done that in person yet since he interviewed with team owner Arthur Blank and president Rich McKay via satellite. Though that might sound crazy to some people, a lot of business deals, hirings and firings don’t always take place in face-to-face meetings. It all depends on how comfortable the people involved - especially the one signing the checks - feels about handling matters in such ways.

Dimitroff’s first task will be hiring a coach. The common thinking is that since he is relatively young, 40, he likely would hire a younger coach to grow with him in this rebuilding process. No one knows if anyone the Falcons have already interviewed - Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell - are on his radar.

It will be easy to figure out that if there is little action regarding the coaching search this week that Dimitroff’s main target is still coaching in the playoffs.

Dimitroff will have significant, if not total input on hiring a head coach. Such decisions rarely, if at all, are made unilaterally, so Blank, McKay and others likely will give their opinions on coaching candidates. A good thing for Dimitroff is he’s also coming from outside of the organization, where he can comfortably accumulate opinions from other league officials about potential coaches.

As for McKay, he will not have final say on football issues. Dimitroff will hold the swing vote if his staff is tied on some decisions. Then, he will bring things to McKay and Blank for final approval. Blank, of course, has ultimate say and veto power.

McKay’s pride could be hurt since he was removed from football-making decisions, but he is a survivor who will do what Blank asks him to do. He is not the type to meddle or to try and sabotage things to make himself look better. If Blank thought he was, he wouldn’t have offered McKay a 17-month contract extension that runs through 2010.

Dimitroff, meanwhile, must hire a staff he feels comfortable with and a staff with experience in pro personnel to help with free agency and trades. Dimitroff’s expertise lies in college talent evaluation and he hasn’t been involved in a lot of trades, salary-cap decisions and things of that nature so he is going to need some help.

There are several people already employed by the Falcons who are very capable but he might want to hire some people he is aligned with to support him when tough decisions need to be made.

No question about that. Besides I think Rex Ryan will be the next Ravens HC.

Same here. Or maybe they will make a trade with the Bungles for Marvin Lewis.

it doesn't look like marty wants to coach this year.

His agent says, “yes,” but Marty Schottenheimer says, “no.” At least for now. Schottenheimer, the former Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers coach, told the Miami Herald Saturday he is unlikely to return to the return to the NFL.

It was the second time in three weeks Schottenheimer ruled out another go-around in the league, which includes interviewing for the Ravens’ head coaching position.

‘’In all likelihood, I’m not going to be back,’’ Schottenheimer told the Herald.
