Sources: Garrett brought in for 2nd interview
Cowboys offensive coordinator could be offered job before he leaves town
Jamison Hensley | Sun reporter

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett took a major step toward becoming the Ravens' next head coach, flying into Baltimore tonight to interview with team officials for a second time, two league sources said.

If the meeting is a success, there is a chance that Garrett could be named the third coach in Ravens history as early as tomorrow, one source said.

Garrett has long been considered the front-runner to land the job with the Ravens, who fired Brian Billick on Dec. 31.

The source said the Ravens are ready to interview another candidate, most likely Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach John Harbaugh, if it doesn't work out with Garrett.

Garrett's agent did not respond to e-mails sent by The Sun.

According to ESPN.com, Garrett also has a second interview with the Atlanta Falcons and could fly out of Baltimore tomorrow morning.

If the Ravens want Garrett, they likely would try to strike a deal with him before he leaves. As of early tonight, the Ravens had not begun contract negotiations with Garrett.

The hiring of Garrett could be seen as a risk, because he has been coaching in the NFL for only three seasons.

But before taking over the Ravens, owner Steve Bisciotti prided himself on building a successful business by banking on young and hungry people. Garrett, 41, would be in that same mold and be a coach Bisciotti could build a team around for years.

A 12-year backup quarterback in the NFL, Garrett was the quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins for two seasons before becoming the Cowboys offensive coordinator this season.

Dallas finished No. 3 in the NFL in total offense this season but faded down the stretch. In the final four games (including a playoff loss to the New York Giants), the Cowboys averaged 10 1/2 points.

The Ravens met with Garrett on Jan. 5 for several hours, but NFL rules stopped the Ravens from speaking to him again until Dallas' season was over.

When the Cowboys flopped in the playoffs Sunday, there was immediate speculation the Ravens would pursue Garrett. He spent most of today attending the Cowboys' end-of-the-season meetings.

There is a chance that the Cowboys could still try to keep Garrett.

Before the playoff loss, Dallas coach Jerry Jones said of Garrett: "I respect his abilities as a coach. I'm impressed with the success of his guidance relative to our offense. When you say I went to great lengths to get him, I did, but I didn't give up the Cowboys to get him. Everything is relative. What to do to keep him? I'd work hard, but there are some things I can't control."

Garrett has ties with the Ravens. His father, Jim, was a Cleveland Browns assistant who coached Pat Moriarty, a running back who is now the Ravens' vice president of football administration. Ozzie Newsome, the Ravens' general manager, was the tight end on that same Cleveland team.

Garrett also has a connection with some of the players. He is represented by David Dunn, the agent for linebacker Ray Lewis and tight end Todd Heap.

By talking to Garrett, the Ravens ended five straight days of not interviewing candidates.

The other assistants to interview for the Ravens' job were: Dallas assistant head coach Tony Sparano, New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Indianapolis Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell.

Meanwhile, a source said former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan will interview for a second time with the Falcons and could meet with team officials as early as tomorrow.

Ryan is expected to be a strong candidate for that vacancy.

Garret would probably be glad to leave Romo behind. Of course he has much better QB in Baltimore.

It was reported about 2 weeks ago locally that this was practically a done deal. There was even a rumor on SI that J Jones would can Wade Phillips in favor of promoting Garrett to head coach. It won't be a surprise. The Ravens think the have their hands on another Sean Payton magician.

Eagles - If 'Boys' Garrett doesn't get Ravens' job, Eagles' Harbaugh may still have shot
Philadelphia Daily News

According to several reports, the Baltimore Ravens have invited Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett in for a second interview, and are expected to try to sign Garrett as their head coach.
But people close to the situation feel that if the Ravens are unable to reach agreement with Garrett, Eagles secondary coach John Harbaugh might be their fallback. Harbaugh, who earlier apparently came in a close second to Rick Neuheisel for the UCLA head coaching job, interviewed in Baltimore last week.

There were rumors last night that Harbaugh had been asked back for a second interview, as well, but a source close to Harbaugh said that was not the case.

Garrett could be a candidate for other NFL coaching openings, and there has been speculation that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might try something innovative in order to keep him in Dallas. After the Cowboys' Sunday playoff loss to the Giants, Jones said head coach Wade Phillips would be retained.

Harbaugh is a good coach. I dont think he has ever been a coordinator but its not like being a coordinator is a sure sign of success as a head coach.

Why is it that a team that posts a winning season suddenly has the next Vince Lombardi as their OC? Is the hype machine just that good? You'd think owners would learn their lesson after a while.

I wonder if Lewis has much of a future left in Baltimore? I know he is the face of their team, but it would also make a statement to the entire organization if a new coach came in and cut Lewis.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Wade gets thrown overboard and Garrett is given the keys to the Winebago. Tony Sparano is gone, Garrett might be gone, that leaves Wade standing on the sidelines without his #1 and #2 in charge of a playoff team that just floundered. Jerry Jones made a fortune poking expensive holes in the ground that often were dry holes. He's a gambler. I wouldn't be surprised a bit if he gambled with a new 41 year old HC.

Garret and his O had a great year. I suffered through many cowboy games and came away very impressed. He is pedal to the medal for 4 qtrs and super aggressive. No give up draws on 3rd and long etc, he trusted his players and his qb. He is a princeton grad so he is supposed to be "sharp" however he laid down in the playoff game and decided to run 40 times and go away from what made them successful all year. Maybe he out-smarted himself but if his playcalling in the playoffs is any indication of how he plans for a big game I hope they sign him because people are calling for his head now in big D because he played marty ball in the 1 game that counted and it cost them.

Wouldn't he still have to follow the Rooney rule after he let Wade go?

Man what a farce that would be.......

Part of the reason they ran the ball a little more is because TO and Glenn's health was suspect coming into the game. Don't forget that Marion Barber has had a number of 3-TD games, and the Giants had been a team that you could run on. Not sure why they weren't able to run on them with authority in the playoffs except to say that Romo seems to hit a slump towards the beginning of December when most teams are getting ready to make their playoff run.

very good points...on the other hand the giants had only 3 corners healthy and 2 of them were pulled up from the practice squad the week of the game.

Dolphins hire Sparano away from Dallas

Tony Sparano is going to work for Bill Parcells again, this time as coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Profile: Tony Sparano

Age: 46

College: New Haven

College experience:
1984-87: Univ. of New Haven, O-line coach
1988: Boston University, O-line coach
1989-1993: Boston, offensive coordinator
1994-98: New Haven, head coach

Pro experience:
1999: Browns, off. quality control coach
2000: Browns, offensive line coach
2001: Redskins, tight ends coach
2002: Jaguars, tight ends coach
2003-04: Cowboys, tight ends coach
2005-06: Cowboys, offensive line coach
2007: Cowboys, assistant head coach

Sparano, who had been the Dallas Cowboys' assistant head coach, accepted a job offer Wednesday from new Miami boss Parcells. They worked together with the Cowboys when Parcells was head coach from 2003-06.

The agreement was first reported by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

Sparano becomes the Dolphins' fifth head coach since 2004. Parcells was on the job for only a week before he fired Cam Cameron, who went 1-15 in his first year as an NFL head coach.

The 46-year-old Sparano became available when the Cowboys lost their playoff game Sunday to the New York Giants. He has been the front-runner for the Dolphins job since the start of their search.

Sparano arrived at the team complex Wednesday morning wearing a suit and accompanied by new Miami general manager Jeff Ireland. Owner Wayne Huizenga soon joined them, then left about an hour later.

Ireland, who spent the past seven years in player personnel with the Cowboys, first interviewed Sparano in Dallas on Jan. 5.

The Dolphins also interviewed Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. But none of them has direct ties to Ireland or Parcells, and Ireland has said it's important that he and Parcells be familiar with the new coach.

Sparano also interviewed for head jobs with the Ravens and Atlanta Falcons, but he had been widely expected to join the Dolphins. The New Haven (Conn.) Register, citing an unidentified source, reported Jan. 5 that Sparano was offered the job and would accept it after the Cowboys' season.

Sparano is a true football guy with a no-nonsense approach and a great connection with players. Two years ago, Sean Payton tried to hire him as the Saints offensive coordinator and he asked Parcells to let him go. Parcells, then with Dallas, balked and declined the request.

Sparano is a native of New Haven, Conn. His only head coaching experience was at New Haven in 1994-98. His team was NCAA Division II runner-up in 1997.

The Dolphins have repeatedly tapped the Dallas pipeline since the arrival of Parcells. Former Cowboys assistant David Lee was hired as quarterbacks coach, and on Tuesday, Brian Gaine was hired as assistant director of player personnel after three years as the Cowboys' assistant director of pro scouting.

Sparano joined Parcells in Dallas in 2003 as tight ends coach, became offensive line coach in 2005 and called plays for Parcells in 2006. He was promoted to assistant head coach last February.

Miami's search has been much less extensive than a year ago, when at least a dozen coaches were interviewed and Huizenga traveled as far as Costa Rica to meet with potential candidates.

The Dolphins are coming off the worst season in team history. They lost their first 13 games and missed the playoffs for the sixth consecutive year, extending a franchise record.

The coach's office became a revolving door in 2004, when Dave Wannstedt quit after nine games and was replaced by Jim Bates. Nick Saban became the coach in 2005, but lasted only two years before leaving for Alabama.

FOX Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
