Okay, I received an email a few weeks ago from New Era Scouting with a PDF file of their early scouting report. I have to give these guys kudos, it is 116 pages and has a few lines on the top 10 at every position, juniors that could come out, and a best of the rest. They detail about every guy they list, not much, but a blurb. They also came out with a 7-round mock, which we will now mock. They have us picking 24th, we actually pick 23rd....so I bolded each place in each round. Here are our picks so you can cut and paste it. Damn, I make this too easy for you asses.....

New Era Scouting has a little more work to do.

The last name of this pick is misspelled (Alridge) and his position is incorrect (RB):

23rd-Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss-okay, I know he was not listed in this draft, but I think he may be there, so I take him. Otah would be fine though. Either way, both are going to be good players.

55th-Gosder Cherilous, OT, Boston College-when I look at mock drafts, I look for guys that jump out. If I get Oher in the first, Cherilous is the pick here. If I get Otah, I might go with Chris Williams, OT, Vandy. I want to get an athlete and a mauler. Oher/Cherilous or Otah/Williams fit that bill. Damn, if the draft played out like this, you have your bookend OTs for the next decade. I kick Colon inside.

87th-Beau Bell, OLB, UNLV-at 6'3"-245, Bell can run and tackle. He plays the game with bad intentions. He also plays sideline to sideline. He does better with things in front of him and coverage may be an issue, but he blows things up.

119th-Owen Schmitt, FB, WV-are you kidding me? Why would I not spend a 4th on a FB that can do it all and do it all well. This draft has three really good FBs and if you can get one on the 2nd day, you better take one.

151st-Steve Johnson, WR, Kentucky-at 6'3"-198, he may not have that blazing speed, but he seperates and makes the catch. He actually had more receptions than Keenan Burton. He will probably go ahead of Burton as well. When you watch him, he just looks like a player.

183rd-Eric Young, OG, Tennessee-he has him going at pick 219. My aching ass he falls to the 7th round, he is widely considered one of the top 5 OGs in the draft. I would gladly take a Vol that played OT to try at OG.

215th-Tommy Blake, OLB, TCU-this works. He is a great physical talent that battled some issues with anxiety and pressure. He had to step away from the game to get his head right. He could do that again. If he doesn't, you have first round production at a 7th round price.

So, I miss on my DE. I wanted to get one, but I really stayed true to taking the guy I felt was the best talent. I end up with 2-OTs, 1-OG, 2-OLBs, 1 WR, and a FB. The thing is, if Bell is what I think he can be, he really can spell Woodley. Blake could be a terror at ROLB. I have bookend tackles for the next decade and potentially a great OG in Young. I feel I have helped the FB position for a long while and added depth at WR. If I can do all that and miss addressing center and DE, then I can live with that.

IMO, they have more than a little work to do..........

LOVE this draft TMC. Two outstanding OT prospects and Bell, who is indeed a bad, bad man, would be enough for me. But to tack on potential guys like Blake (who I love) and Schmitt (who everyone loves) is gravy.

At the wideout spot, though - use your infinite TMC resources and check out K-State's Jordy Nelson. Tell me you've seen a more Pittsburgh Steeler WR since the 1998 draft.

24-P Pittsburgh, Limas Sweed Texas WR...the big WR I'm projecting to fall to us in Rnd 1. Would help stretch the defense, prepare for the retirement of Hines, and give Ben a nice weapon in the red zone. Skill...game changers in the first round!
56-P Pittsburgh, Tony Hill Texas OT...some have him going in the first/early second. If he falls this far, he's a steal...and a future franchise LT.
88-P Pittsburgh, Roy Schuening Oregon State OG...the best guard in the draft. Replaces Faneca from day one, mini camp.
120-P Pittsburgh, Andre Fluellen FSU DT...another big body with decent feet to anchor the DL. Could play end in our current system or DT in the 4-3.
152-P Pittsburgh, Julius Stinson Wyoming CB...speedy guy who could contribute on ST while learning the position.
184-P Pittsburgh, Marcus Coleman Wisconsin OC...probably the third best center in this draft falling to Rnd 6? Hmmm...a position of need and a keeper.
Rnd 7 pick traded for Rossum.

Mike Mayock ranks Nelson as his 5th best senior WR. I think Nelson needs to run well at the combine. IMO, if he does that, watch for Nelson to FLY up draft boards. He is a big WR that does a lot with the ball after he catches it. He has solid hands....was a little banged up last season, so that may be a concern. I do not think he makes it out of the mid-2nd round though.......

I do not think they listed any Juniors, so when I drafted Oher, I did it where I thought he would go, instead of doing it in the 6th.

I like TMC's draft, that's how mine would go.
-Oline addressed in a big way
-I really like the LB, having explosive playmakers at LB is a must if you run a 3-4, I think he and Timmons would compliment each other nicely.
-Owen Schmitt, the guy is a monster and can do it all.

Why pass on Baker by taking a raw Otah?
baker could come in and start early, TMC you said Otah has a great frame but some learning disorder or sonething like that in that case he could be another Nkwentki, why pass on a sure thing by taking a project?

The draft committee that College players talk to have him going in the second round, of course a poor or great combine can change that.

I'd be surpised if we took Moffit, slu. He's been accused of walking out on his wife and kids and she's also alleged that she took his online tests.May be too much drama surrounding him.

TMC, Otah is going to be a very good player and he fills a need but you can't be as good at this talent evaluation process if you think we would draft him and pass on Phillips of the U. Phillips is a top 12 talent IMHO and we need another safety.
Perhaps Gosder Cherilous of BC in the second if we didn't land a OT in round one. He has late first round talent so to land him late second would be good value.

TERRENCE’S STEELERS 2008 MOCK DRAFT PICKS

*I have scouting reports on most and also have their situations within the team if they were drafted. Took me sometime so enjoy!

1ST Round Pick

23rd- Jeff Otah – Pitt/ OT | Height: 6-6 | Weight: 340 | 40-Time: 5.35

First things first…say our prayers and hope that we move up to take Jeff Otah. Kick Kendall Simmons azz to the bench and place Willie Colon at RG. We test Jeff Otah at RT or LT and see where he fits best. Again we say our prayers and pray that Max Starks returns and holds that LT…leaving us to move Otah at RT. This guy is large and in charge…great punch at the point of attack…great footwork….smart and strong as a brama bull.

2nd Round Pick

55th-Chilo Rachal- USC/ OG | Height: 6-5 | Weight: 315 | 40-Time: 5.20

Big Smart and Agile…This guy ranks 7 out of 169 OG’s. Played Right Guard at USC and paved the way for running backs such as The USC star Joe McKnight and another big USC RB Chauncey Washington. Lets face it Kendall Simmons is terrible and he would give Kendall the best battle and will win a starting position on the Oline.

3rd Round Pick

:D 87th- Tavares Gooden – Miami(FL)/ OLB Height: 6-2 | Weight: 238 | 40-Time: 4.50

Really athletic...Very good timed speed...Has a solid build...Outstanding in pursuit with a burst to close...Extremely active with a non-stop motor...Has a nose for the ball...Excellent range...A reliable tackler who will deliver the big hit. Fluid and does a nice job in coverage...Hard worker...Versatile...Very productive...Great pedigree.

The next in a long line of great Hurricane linebackers...Will attempt to follow in the footsteps of guys like Ray Lewis, DJ Williams, Jonathan Vilma, Rocky McIntosh and Jon Beason..Has experience at all three linebacker positions...He was a prep track star (discus)...Also a special teams ace...Flew under the radar to a degree due in large part to the struggles of the Miami program but this guy's a superb prospect.
*Scott Wright’s Draft Countdown Report

He could definitely challenge James Farrior inside. Lets face it…Farrior is turning 33 this year and we need younger talent in the middle. Foote sees Timmons right on the back of his heels and Farrior needs to be pressed HARD. This guy is a huge playmaker…he is BIG…STRONG…and what we lack….SPEED. He is a fast guy who will definitely be the next big thing coming out of Miami. We cannot pass up on him if we have the opportunity. *Notice how I highlighted Special Team Ace.

4th Round Pick

119th- Ahtyba Rubin- Iowa St./ DT | Height: 6-3 | Weight: 326 | 40-Time: 5.15

Lets face it folks Casey and Aaron NEED HELP…they cannot do it by themselves. Brett Keisel is a bust and is not the answer. I cannot believe they said he would act like Adailus Thomas…as my dad said it best “Keisel couldn’t even hold his jock strap”. Rubin is a very large guy with good moves and is very strong. He ranks 11 out of 148 DT’s. Big Strong and Very Quick for his size. This guy is a monster and could be used on situational plays or even if the Steelers drop 4 down he would definitely be there to shut that run down. In 2005 he played OL. What better than someone who knows both sides of the ball? He knows a OL weakness and can look for advantage within that knowledge. Don’t worry I have our DE solution with the next pick.

5th Round Pick

151st- Glenn Sharpe- Miami(FL)/ CB | Height: 6-0 | Weight: 187 | 40-Time: 4.45

Young guy with great speed and starting experience. He would fit great under Tomlins guidance. Recipient of the 2006 Brian Piccolo Award as the most courageous player in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Slight concern because of season ending injuries in 2005 and 2006. I still like this kid though….he has heart and talent. You cannot ask for much more than that….except GIVE HIM A CHANCE. We got a good corner last year in the 5th round. Lets take another shot at one. Our starting corner is Ike Taylor and his seasons are based on one hell of roller coaster ride. Deshea is SOLID…great instincts and great reactions…he is starting to slow down though and has been successful due to being a veteran and not quickness. McFadden has been pulling a disappearing act. You see him a couple games and then he jus disappears. William Gay had a great rookie season…special teams and at corner…very please. We need some more young competition to light the fire under some of these guys.

or

87th- Kendall Langford- Hampton/ DE-DT | Height: 6-6 | Weight: 294 | 40-Time: 5.00

I had thoughts about Glenn Sharpe and if he is not available I would definitely go with Kendall Langford. What happened to the way the Steelers used to attack the draft by going at small schools? This guy may have not faced Big Ten or SEC teams but he is a big guy with an relentless motor. We saw what Antwan Barnes could do for Baltimore and we also saw what Patrick Willis from Ole Miss. I mean granted he was a beast and a 1st round pick but we cannot stray away from talent. He has great size and could EASILY repalce Keisel. We need another big body at RE.

6th Round Pick

183rd- Lance Leggett- Miami(FL)/ WR | Height: 6-3 | Weight: 192 | 40-Time: 4.45

Again another product of “THE U”. He has good speed and has size to win jump balls. He could really light some fire under Washington and Wilson…they NEED IT. They both have been very inconsistent. Dallas Touchdown Maker Baker will have his shot and I would love to see Leggett battling with these guys in training camp. We need another deep threat and he could easily be one of them with size and great speed.

7th Round Pick

215th- Tommy Blake- TCU/ILB Height: 6-3 | Weight: 252 | 40-Time: 4.70

He has great size and good be a beast in the middle. Dont really know much about him but he looks like a solid pick. Even though we wont receive this pick due to Allen Rossums trade.

I did not include a HB because I feel we will either grab one in FA but to be honest I feel Gary Russell has the ability to be the one and two punch with Willie Parker. Najeh is not the answer..not powerful and not a banger. Najeh is weak and goes down way to easily. All we need to do is give Russell a LANE! He is a big back that is agile and has great potential...this offseason will show us how much he wants it. Willie loves this guy and is going to take him under his wing just say Bettis did to him. Center should be taken under reins by Darnell Stapleton. He was a standout during Preseason and at Training Camp. He has been held on the bench due to a nagging injury. Questions about the FS position. I dont know what to expect. I dont know if Smith is ready and I dont know if Clark will be ready to return. So its not a dramatic need but it does deserve some thought. I know we will not attack the FA market hard but we will need quality competition.

On Ole Miss's scout message board they are reporting that Oher is coming back for his senior yr.

Also confirmed on ESPN. This pretty much eliminates Long, Clady, Oher and Baker from us. It looks like it could be BPA in the first.

3 miami guys?...

I noticed that as well. I don't want 3 guys from a school that could even make a bowl game...

Tavaris Gooden is a solid pick regardless....Sharpe maybe a hit or miss pick which is why that is the only pick I chose two people and the other was to go with the DE/DT from Hampton. When it all boils down and I had to choose between the two I would go with Langford. As for Leggett...the more and more I read about him the more he is less appealing. Instead of him I am replacing him with Paul Hubbard from Wisconsin...amazing athelete with great size and speed.

This is what they say about him "At 6'4" and 213 lbs., Hubbard is a massive target. He possesses good speed, soft hands, and great leaping ability. He's still raw, but if he shows he can run crisp routes and catch the ball over the middle in workouts, Hubbard has a chance to be a really good pro receiver. The rather deep class of wide receivers in this year's draft may move Hubbard down to the fourth or fifth round." I should have chose a better receiver..that was a mistake on my part but all other players are SOLID

Why pass on Baker by taking a raw Otah?
baker could come in and start early, TMC you said Otah has a great frame but some learning disorder or sonething like that in that case he could be another Nkwentki, why pass on a sure thing by taking a project?

Jeff Otah and Michael Oher are two different players. Michael Oher went to Ole Miss, had a learning disorder, and has worked hard to overcome it. The thing is, Oher is a nasty dude that plays hard. He is very intense and has all the physical skills to get it done. Jeff Otah is a fast rising OT. He plays at Pitt and is a big guy with a big frame that has great feet. He is probably the 2nd ranked Senior tackle right now.

Baker is a solid tackle and I would be more than happy with Baker, but Baker is strictly a LT as he does not push people around. He is more of a finesse pass blocker. Otah and Oher can play either RT or LT....probably both OG positions as well. They are bigger, stronger, and are probably as good in pass protection. So, both would be ahead of Baker.

I am not a Kenny Phillips fan. While he is undoubtedly the top safety in this draft, in other drafts, I do not think he would be. Phillips is not thick through the torso, in fact, when you look at him, he is a slim guy. He has been bumped up some through his career. He also is not a great run supporter.....he will do it, but he would rather be in coverage. He has good speed, but not elite NFL speed, so if he gets paired up with some receivers, they will eat him up. While I think he will have a good pro career, I do not think he is an Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu type pick, and we got Polamalu in the 15th spot.

Now, with all that said, I think Otah and Oher's best football is ahead of them. Both have the potential to visit the Pro Bowl many times. IMO, if BOTH Otah and Oher were in last seasons draft, they would have easily went ahead of Ugoh and possibly out performed him.

Finally, one thing you always have to remember, if you have two players rated equally, if one is a corner, offensive tackle, quarterback, or pass rusher, they get precendence because those are the 4 positions that are considered cornerstones for building teams.

I take the tackle over the safety and do not even look back.

Think about this......just spittballing here, but what if you were to draft....

23rd-Jeff Otah, OT, Pitt
55th-Chris Williams, OT, Vandy (Cherilous would still work....but anyway)
87th-Roy Schuening, OG, Oregon State
119th-Adam Kraus, C, Michigan
151st-Steve Johnson, WR, Kentucky
183rd-Darrell Robertson, DE, Georgia Tech (OLB for us)

That would give you a line of
LT-Otah or Williams
LG-Schuening or Colon
C-Stapleton, Kraus, or Mahan
RG-Simmons, Kemoeatu, Scheuning, Colon
RT-Otah, Williams, Colon, potentially Starks.....but I doubt you draft 2 if you extend him.

Of course, we would hurt at every other position for a season or two........
