View Full Version : How about a DE or RB in the first?

I have been pondering this question because the Steelers usually don't select linemen in the first round. There are fewer good DEs in the draft this year and we might want to get the talent early instead of later. I threw running back into the equation because there were four top backs that ran 4.4- 4.3 40s range in the combine and although running back isn't the biggest need item there are some good ones.
That being said I still think they will draft linemen but maybe in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
I just hope they pick good players instead of busts

It all depends on who is there, if there is a top flight OT, you can bet we are taking him.

Ahem...wanna suggest Limas Sweed? Or should we look at a FA WR instead?

If we do not select an OT in round 1, then there are only a few players I would be Ok with if they are still available:

1. Rodgers-Cromartie CB/FS
2. Hardy WR
3. Doucet WR
4. Merling DE

Rashad Mendenhall would be a beast in the B&G. As a matter of fact, he'll be a beast anywhere.

I agree that adding a highly talented RB or DE would be beneficial, but who will be there at 23, we would probably have to trade up. Mendenhall is definately not lasting that long, maybe Stewart, he would be a perfect fit. At DE, Jackson, Harvey, and Campell are all possible, but none are special. It would be fun to draft someone flashy, but the reality is we need to get any one of those top 4 OTs. Be smart and don't do some stupid shit like draft a WR, that's somethin the Lions would do.

Ah, Einstien...have you heard about, oh, let's see - Roy Williams? How about Calvin Johnson?

I really hope you were joking...

You can scratch Harvey and Jackson as both are way to small to play DE here. At 6'8" and 280, Campbell would need to, and probably would, put on about another 15-20lbs, or he'll get pushed around like a blocking sled.

Buddy, what about Charles Rogers or Mike Williams. If you pick that many receivers in the top 10 you are eventually going to get someone good. Also, look at what Roy and Calvin have got them. My point is you can't always draft someone flashy so yes, i was serious.:D

Hardy has excellent size. I believe he will be around in the third. Here is the only red flag that I caught on him.

"Has some character issues and one off-field problem that needs further clarification, and he must be upfront in interviews at the Combine..."

Wouldn't mind picking this kid up if his stock doesn't drop. I saw a quick interview that Rod Woodson did on him at the combine and he seemed good to me, at least on the surface.

James Hardy (WR)

He also ran a 4.47 at the combine I think, unless he bombs out as his pro day, or gets into trouble off field, he'll be gone before we pick in round 2 I bet.

Hmmm, you might be right. I didn't see his forty time. Remember how Brady Quinn was supposed to be a top 5-10 pick last year? I hope this kid drops to us, doubt it but it would be nice. You know how the forty is over-hyped sometimes too which brings up something else to mind, why in the "H" do they make O-lineman run the forty?

I like him too.

Any idea what round he is expected to go in?
Can he convert to OLB?

1st or 2nd, but I'm not sure where he'd play here. To small to play DE in a 3-4, and we have Woodley at LOLB, which would be the ideal spot for Jackson.

Woodley is a bust. We need to replace him.

He already has those character concerns. Was arrested a couple of years ago for domestic assault on his girlfriend and infant son. Charges were later dropped after he agreed to enter a diversion program. Then was suspended the first two games of the 06 season for something unrelated.

Jon Stewart would be a great pick. This guy is the next Stephen Jackson. I know our line sucked last year but I for one think Jon Stewart is a clear cut upgrade of Parker. With the draft being deep in lineman I think we can get a good one in the 2nd. I think Otah's stock is falling and Nicks could also be there in the 2nd. Or maybe take Pollack in the 2nd. That would solve our center problem.

I agree that a DE is a very real possibility early in the draft, perhaps as early as round 1 or 2. Tomlin and Colbert have stated that the Steelers need to get younger on both the OL and DL.

The depth of quality O-line prospects in this draft, and some good DE's as well, means that OT-DE-C/G is a real possibility. I would hate for the Steelers to pass on a player like Scheuning in the 2nd round, however.

If one of the best OL prospects isn't there then DL is fine. I don't want a RB in the first few rounds. They can be had in the later rounds IMHO. I would look at the best OL, DL, WR first.

The only problem with a DE is how many of the top rated DE's could really be 3-4 DE's in our system?
Campbell from Miami, but at his height he'd have to put on some weight and from what I've heard he had a poor combine and it might knock him out of round 1.

The rest of the top rated DE's all seem like they would fit in a 4-3, but probably not in a 3-4

If one of the top OT's aren't there, I wouldn't be shocked if we went with a CB.

Got to agree on that.Does anyone know how MEHRLING did in the 40 and the drills?
If we go dl round one a kid like Albert or Nicks could still be there in round 2. Bennett or Pollack in round 3 would quiet the angry mob!

Carl nicks, pass. Didn't he play on Larry Bird's great 1979 Indiana State team ?
