The NFL, which has been without question the most popular professional sport in America, is nevertheless awash in debt.

According to Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal, the league had more than $9 billion in debt as of October 2007.

That’s an average of more than $281,000,000 per team.

Gee. If the NFL was in debt to the tune of $9 Billion Dollars they'd shut their doors, but these fuckwads once again take something and spin it the wrong way...

I'm no fan of PFT, but this is not their story.

But they put it out there when any fool knows that debt comes from almost every team building a new stadium in the last 5-10 years...

Of course those teams have that debt to pay back...

In buisness terms, debt is not necessarily bad. Using debt to finance is a strategy to decrease taxable income for shareholders. I would not be surprised if that article was accurate.

The NFL does owe $9B, it was in a court filing. But, the Giants/Jets and Cowboys borrowed roughly 1/4th of that to build their new stadiums. Heinz Field costs are listed between $244M and $300M and is honestly, a basic stadium. Ford Field in Detroit costs a half BILLION dollars, so did Arizona's stadium. The Colts spent $675M. The Cowboys have already topped $500M and are not finished construction yet.

Here is the thing, from the same report:

"League revenue in 2006 was $6.97 billion, the union said in a collusion complaint made to Special Master Stephen Burbank, and NFLPA Executive Director Gene Upshaw, in announcing that case, said league revenue was expected to rise to $9 billion."

That debt is not more than what they expect their YEARLY revenue to be. Once teams start seeing increased revenue from those stadiums, the debt will begin to come down.

Depending on how they define debt, this might be true - gauranteed salaries not yet paid, financing of new stadiums, etc.

I don't know how many billions the NFL gets in TV revenue a year, but figuring the NFL rakes in probably $2 billion/year in tickets sales alone, a debt of $9 billion isn't that staggering.

Speaking of the new stadiums, has anyone looked at the Cowboys or Colts new places? They'll definitely be two of the most unique stadiums in the league, though I'm not a fan of either.

The NFL is the #1 sport in America. I would not worry about any money problems with the league.
