Since this is draft related I won't start a new thread. But I was perusing a Texan message board and pulled this. Apparently there is a rumor floating around in their local media that we are wanting to trade up for their 18th pick.....for a receiver. Feel free to scoff and poo poo. It is what it is.
According to Thomas Hilton at the Houston Chroncile, the Texans and Steelers are discussing a trade. The Texans would receive the 23rd pick and the Steeler's 3rd round pick while the Steelers would get the 18th pick.
The Steelers would then target WR Malcolm Kelly from Oklahoma.

I'm not putting too much into this rumor, but if anything, we should be looking to add more picks. We need depth in a lot of areas and we can get a very good player in the third round. I would bet we could also get a top receiver (if that is the direction we are going) at the 23rd pick.

if we move up and for a WR, I hope its not him..... if we move up it will be for OT, CB, or DE

Man if this is true, Colbert and his staff should all be fired right now (IMHO). The LAST thing we need is another first round receiver AND to lose a vital third round pick.

That would be stupid to move up for a receiver. There can be one had at 23 without pissing away a
3rd rounder. We need bodies and big ones at that.

People ... relax. Stupid rumor an a Texan message board.
Means absolutely nothing.
If Steelers were to move up, they would be targeting OT or DE. Tomlin has very clearly stated that the offensive and defensive lines are the areas that need attention.

no one in there right mind would be discussing a trade like that right now since it would tip all of the other teams on what they wanted to do allowing to counter that move if they coveted a certain player. Any trade involving picks won't take place or even be discussed until it was certain said player was still on the board.

There could be some validity in the rumor... where there is smoke there is fire. The part I have trouble with is moving up to select a WR. That part could be a smoke screen that is relevant to outsiders because we cut Wilson. If we move up, it will be for an OT (or a CB woul dbe OK). The FO knows we need OL help and if they want to find a OT that could solidify our OL for the next 10 years, then move up and get him. We know that finding diamonds in the rough, especially in day 2, is hit or miss so make the most of the picks in the top 2 rounds. We also know that we will most likely not be able to fix everything in one draft. If we can come out of this draft with a quality OT, DL and a CB and then a developmental WR, I will be pleased.

[I][B]According to Thomas Hilton at the Houston Chronicle...
Interesting item.
But I've subscribed to the Chronicle for most of the past 27 years, used to write for it (sports), and have several friends there - and I've never heard of Thomas Hilton.
Update: He might do some kind of Texans fan blog.
So it just has to be true...

If we move up, it shouldn't be for a WR. Maybe the WR part is a smokescreen when they could actually be targeting someone like Williams. This early before the draft, teams are sending out "feelers' to gauge their options come draft day.

god damnit, this is the last thing we need to do. we do not need to get a higher pick for a fucking WR. we need to get the best available OL such as branden albert, maybe chris williams, anyone but a WR.

Every year the Steelerrs put out feelers for what it will take to move up or down. This is so they can better prepare to get who they want, and don't have to come up with desperation plans when the player they want is selected ahead of them. Look at the teams that are between the Steelers and Houston and see who would want a Wr in the first. The only one I can think of is Dallas, and they are rumored to want to trade the farm for a RB (McFadden).

Just rumors. The Steelers do seem to like to play the misdirection game though. I have no problem misleading other teams. I agree we need all our first three picks.

We need bodies. There is absolutely no reason for us to trade up a few spots and lose a pick.

We're a month away. If there's ANY truth to this, it will change about 90 times if it even goes through at all.

rumor, Steelers trade entire draft to move up to get the BC quarterback!
Really, cause I just heard from my man Big Boy who overheard a conversation between Fabio and his gay lover Ray Ray Lewis that HE heard Hines talking shit about Kevin Colbert walking in on Kordell's sister and snapping a wicked photo of her snapper being pummeled by Chris Long and blackmailing him into signing with the Steelers at the #23 spot.

I think we all know championship teams aren’t built in a year. The Steelers are probably on a two to three year plan to put the team back in the Superbowl. Don’t get me wrong, the Steelers try to win it every year and that’s the best part about being a Steeler fan, they always put a good product on the field.
If we truly want to get this team in the best position to compete for years to come, then we need to draft young offensive and defensive lineman for stability in this years draft. We can take a chance on a late round WR or DB and develop them like Baker and Gay. But this year we need to get some young guys on the line to build the foundation for the coming years.
If the Steelers are able to accomplish that this year then they can get a playmaker in the first round next year.
This year we need to fix the foundation.

My guess is we're actually trying to trade down if that rumor is out there. Do the opposite.

Do you think New England and Indianapolis are in 2-3 year building plans? Not a chance. Both have franchise QBs and expect to be competing for the Super Bowl each year. We have a top 5 QB and need to surround him with the talent so we have the opportunity at a Super Bowl well more often than not.

This is stupid because:
A)WR isn't as pressing a need
B)Malcolm Kelly is coming off an injury, fits more in the mold of a West-Coast Offense, and is slipping down draftboards. Mike Mayock said some teams have him entirely off their draft boards due to injury concerns.
C)At #18 we should get Williams and if he's not there we definately shouldn't do this deal.

By the way, don't know how valid it is, but someone who used to play on Indiana's football team told me that "Hardy is a cokehead"

Good post Andy...makes good sense. Not sure we should automatically rule out WR/CB/DL simply b/c the great OL may not be there at the #23 position. Don't get me wrong, I am all for drafting Chris Williams or Branden Albert...but if they are not there, we CANNOT reach for someone like Cherilus or Nicks. We need to grab the BPA with a direct correlation to what our most glaring needs are.
You are completely correct in saying that this will not occur overnight. Let's build through the draft with an emphasis on filling holes, but also taking the best players available.

which was supposedly the reason why we didn't draft a home town HoF'er QB named Marino.... that really worked out:confused:

I would much rather them trade down than settling with Albert, and I like Albert as a pick. If they traded to the late part of the 1st/beginning of the 2nd and added a 3rd or 4th, that'd be great. I'd be cool with picking up Cherilus or Sam Baker in the late 1st round.
