Anthony "Booger" McFarland, released last month by the Indianapolis Colts when he failed their physical, came to a contract agreement with the Steelers last night after meeting with team officials and taking a physical earlier in the day. He is a defensive lineman who is 6 feet, 300 pounds. He spent all last season on injured reserve with a knee injury. The Colts acquired McFarland in a trade with Tampa Bay in October 2006 for a second-round draft choice.

He was the Buccaneers' first-round draft choice in 1999 from LSU and played for Tampa Bay when Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was the secondary coach there.

I'm assuming that like Hartig, another player who was released, that Booger will have no impact on our 3rd rd compensation for Faneca?

Man I wish Haggans would sign somewhere, anywhere, other than here.

If the rookies we bring in to camp don't show anything or can't measure up then Booger stays on. If one of the rooks has some game, Booger won't make the final cut. This is just a little insurance that we'll have enough DL come Sept.

I just heard on Sirius radio that Haggen and the Cards agreed on a 1 yr deal not terms released yet. As far as Booger goes I am all for it and here is why, we drafted Mcbean last year and he just sat there. If this is what we are going to do especially after Smith went down I am all for signing a guy like this. We let Mcbean sit while Eason played WTF?? Maybe this will lead to the departure of both Eason and Kirschke.

Some more proof on the Haggan's deal...

| Print Haggans Has A New Home
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― It appears as though the LaMarr Woodley Era in Pittsburgh has begun; that's because last year's starter at outside linebacker, Clark Haggans, has a new home.

Haggans has reportedly signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Steelers are expecting Woodley to fill Haggans spot in the starting lineup.

Woodley was the teams 2nd round pick in last year's draft.

Haggans drew very little interest in the free agent market drawing only a visit to the Cleveland Browns and Arizona. In Arizona, Haggans will be reunited with former Steelers assistants Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm.

Haggans was drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round in the 2000 NFL Draft. Haggans started 61 games in his 8 years with the team and recorded 32.5 sacks.

Officially yes. However like 50 different media outlets reported that it was a done deal like 5 days ago. I was referring to the other thread of people complaining that the Steelers and and the official website are always behind on reporting moves. They wait until every detail is workd out before they can comment but everybody and their brother knew this was happenig since last week.

My point was if you are waiting for the team site to report it, you may be waiting until a few days from now even though the Post Gazette, the Trib Review and everyone else will be reporting it now.

<HR>Ex-Colt McFarland joins Steelers

Anthony "Booger'' McFarland has agreed to a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran defensive tackle was cut by the Indianapolis Colts in February after failing a physical.

McFarland, 30, missed the entire 2007 season after suffering a knee injury during training camp. The Colts acquired him in a trade with Tampa Bay during the 2006 season. He appeared 11 regular-season games and all four postseason games as the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.

Beat me to it. There are not too many who wouldn't be. He was a very good player for Tampa in his prime before the injries started and was regarded as one of the better Defensive Lineman in the league for a couple years. If he gets healthy and anywhere close to his past performance, he could be a real contributor.

While I'm not overly enthusiastic about the addition of Booger, if the contract is friendly what's the harm?

I know he was out on IR and not on vacation but a year off for a big lineman ain't a bad thing and may have given him a little rest in additon to a cleaned up knee. He did play a decent role in the Colts run defense in their Superbowl season.

If he's used situationally to help plug up the run, then eh.

I mean Great Myron’s Ghost, if he was lying gasping for breath on the field last December or January, Taylor and Jones-Drew would’ve had to at least run around him.

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_559113.html

The agent for Anthony "Booger" McFarland said the free-agent defensive tackle's visit with the Steelers went well but that an agreement on a contract between the two sides has not been reached.
"The visit went extremely well in Pittsburgh and he was ecstatic when he got back," Karl Bernard said.

Bernard said a number of teams have expressed interest in the 6-foot, 300-pound McFarland.

McFarland has played eight seasons in the NFL and he and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin were together in Tampa Bay from 2001-05. McFarland, who helped the Colts win the Super Bowl in 2006, missed all of last season because of a knee injury.
Bernard said he is ahead of schedule in regard to his rehabilitation and that McFarland may be 100 percent for the start of training camp.

In other Steelers news, the team has signed long snapper Greg Warren to a three-year contract.

Warren, who has played in 48 consecutive regular-season games, had been a restricted free agent.

This is correct.

Far51
03-26-2008, 07:56 PM
we have no one ready to replace Farrior, Timmons is being groomed to play RILB and even tough Farrior is 33, he doesn't look wasted, should re-sign for 2 years 3 mill type deal, B/c Foote is no where strong enough to play the mac side, he even as a a rilb just gets driven over and whiffs on tackles more than Lord Tyrone. unless their is gonna be some good LB that can play the mac in 3-4 its best to retain Farrior, unless Timmons is a absolute stud.
But then again we could see the switch to the 43 so they could just leave Timmons as the MLB.
Time will tell, if we see at times some 4-3 fronts then we know for sure to expect that as our base, maybe for a year orr 2 we go hybrid until big Casey's deal is done or when it is AFFORDABLE TO RELEASE HIM.

Smooth Criminal
03-26-2008, 08:03 PM
We need to invest alot more picks into the defense, no matter what scheme we play in. Were getting older in the front 7. Even with Timmons and Woodley taking starting linebacker spots we may lose Farrior and that lease a huge hole at LILB. Plus we need a DE that can start over Keisel, and another to replace Smith who is getting old.

We need a whole new line for a 4-3. Woodley can play an end but I don't have faith in Keisel and Hampton won't fit well. Aaron Smith doesn't have many years. Plus we'll need a LOLB in a 4-3 with Harrison and Timmons starting at the other spots.

No deal yet

The Steelers have not reached an agreement on a contract with free-agent defensive tackle Anthony "Booger" McFarland, his agent said Wednesday.

McFarland met with the Steelers on Tuesday.

"The visit went extremely well in Pittsburgh," Karl Bernard said, "and he was ecstatic when he got back."

But, Bernard added, the two sides have yet to agree to a deal and that other teams are also interested in the 6-1, 300-pound McFarland.

McFarland has played eight seasons in the NFL, and he and Tomlin were together in Tampa Bay from 2001-05.

McFarland, who helped the Colts win the Super Bowl in 2006, missed all of last season because of a knee injury.

Bernard said he is well ahead of schedule in regard to his rehabilitation and that McFarland may be 100 percent for the start of training camp.

the nfl network says we did sign him, also that haggans is a cardinal so do we get a pick from that?

I think they determine the value Haggans adds to the Cards to detemine if we get a comp pick in next year's draft. Booger was released so he does not effect our comp pick. Our best bet at getting a comp pick is Faneca.

Steelers: McFarland not signed; Haggans leaves, Warren stays

By Mike Bires, Times Sports Staff

The Steelers appeared set to sign free-agent defensive lineman Anthony McFarland on Tuesday night. But after working him out Wednesday morning, they withdrew their offer.

A Steelers spokesman said late Wednesday afternoon that no deal has been struck with McFarland.

Apparently, McFarland flunked his physical. A 10-year veteran with 85 career starts, McFarland missed last season with a knee injury. McFarland played for Tampa Bay and Indianapolis.

Meanwhile, the Steelers did re-sign long-snapper Greg Warren. A restricted free agent, Warren agreed to a three-year contract worth $2.3 million with a signing bonus of $395,000.

In other free agent news, former Steelers linebacker Clark Haggans signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Hey, if he's still can;t pass a physical it would be stupid to give him a contract. If they are set on signing more DL depth, I'm sure they can find a vet that at least is healthy. However, even if Booger had an amputed leg, he'd still be an upgrade over Eason.

SIGH, so much for a good-depth signing.

I find it hard to believe Booger passed a physical - he's coming off a torn patellar tendon and wasn't expected to be ready for Week 1.

Somebody in the newsroom jump the gun again?

It's a shame Booger is losing out on jobs because of his injury, but I also can't blame teams for wanting a healthy body to count on for depth and a possible starter.

It has been reported that McFarland failed a physical and will not be signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. This report comes as a disappointment to Steeler Nation who though McFarland would provide solid depth on the defensive line. Additionally, this would have allowed the Steelers to look in other directions such as OL, CB, WR/LB early in the draft.
