Steelers won't get extra draft pick
Monday, March 31, 2008
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- As expected, the Steelers received no extra draft choices when the NFL released its list of compensatory picks today.

The compensatory picks are issued based on a complicated formula that takes into account what teams lost in free agency last year compared to what they acquired.

The Steelers lost little in free agency and signed, for one, starting center Sean Mahan. They did not expect to receive any extra picks and will have six picks entering the April 26-27 draft -- one in each of the first six rounds. They traded their seventh-round pick for punt returner Allen Rossum, who they released in February.

Cincinnati and Baltimore were the main recipients of compensatory picks among the four AFC North Division teams. Cincinnati received four extra picks -- one in the third, one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Baltimore received three draft choices -- one each in the third, fourth and sixth rounds.

Be interesting to see what we get for Faneca in 2009. The Ravens and Bungles definitely picked up a few comp picks. Be interesting to see how they will make out with those extra picks.

Nothing, they will still suck. The bungals picks won't even be allowed work release to attend camp.

the first pick after the traditional end of the 3rd round. In a normal year it should be pick number 97 but since the Pats cheated its technically number 96 this year.

do you determine that pick by the quality of the free agents lost? or the amount?

Compensatory picks are based on 3 criteria (stating this as simply as I can):
1-The number of FAs lost against the number signed. Players released do not count either way. Signing your own FAs do not count.

2-The contract signed by the player. The larger the contract, the higher the comp pick.

3-The performance of the player. This really does not jump a guy a round, but it can affect where in the round you select. Say you have 3 teams sign guys for contracts near $8M a season (like Faneca did). Two of them are over $8M and one is just under $8M, but the under $8M player makes the Prol Bowl while the other two are injured, the team that lost the Pro Bowl guy would select first in the round.

With that said, the Steelers should receive a 3rd round pick, probably behind New Englands (they lost Samuel) and maybe a few other teams.
