Just curious, and this may have already been talked about, but with Hartwig more than likely taking the center job from Mahan I haven't heard much about moving Mahan to his natural guard position. Does anybody see this as a likely scenario or are we more than likely to have another high paid backup on the bench?

Do you really want Mahan on the field?

This question can't be answered in early April. Try again in late August.

We could have announced we went to Home Depot and bought a 10 lb sack of sand and I'd be pretty damn certain it would be starting over Sean Mahan this season.

You give Mahan far too much credit. I was thinking 8 lbs.

Hopefully, with a couple good draft picks, his sorry ass never reaches the field.

Mahan will probably take over the starting job of Deuce, modeling the latest in sweats fashion on the sideline.

Based on what I saw of Mahan last year I dont think he is an NFL player. He has poor technique, slow feet, slow off the line, and too weak. IF he was a rookie we could expect some improvement but at this point what is the point? All those same things will be an issue at guard.

I live in the greater Tampa Bay area and never understood why they signed a back up from the Fuckinqueers in the first place...... TB's line isn't too bad now, but they did pretty much total overhaul the entire line.

And to think we could have drafted this guy and had him playing Center instead...Diet Pepsi Machine.

I think Mahan would be a decent backup and that is it. He is week, so he will have trouble playing center or guard. Guards do have to go against some bigins also. I have a feeling they are going to give him every chance to win that guard spot though. I hope am wrong.

But no, the patriots had to get their grubby little mits on him. Oh well, he didn't do to well for them in the super bowl.

Hopefully after 2008 we won't have to talk about Mahan anymore and he will be off the roster.

I hate to stick up for Mahan but you need to rethink that statement. What makes you think center is an easy position? If it was so easy why don't teams move their best lineman there? I hope for Ben's sake Manhan can block something and if he can't I hope we don't have to talk about him after this year. Mahan will get a shot at guard for 2 reasons #1 he is a Tomlin guy and Tomlin don't want to look bad on his 1st signing and #2 his salary.

I agree Blitz43 - I think the point he was making was that Mahan's weaknesses at C aren't going to go away at guard. His lack of production wasn't because he was at center. It's because he flat out sucks. I think even for a backup, he's not going to be a good guard at all. Tomlin just needs to cut his losses and move on. Keeping Mahan around won't help our line at all... at any position.

VIN!! you've disgraced my son's name!! The model's name is DUCE not Deuce.
Just had to clear the air on that.
WoMahan isn't even welcome on the cricket pitch...were all he has to do is stand at catch the ball.

At this point I'm willing to wait until they put him there to see what he can do. He's here, he's signed, and we have a slew of players we will be trying out at the guard position. I will reserve the "he sucks at guard also" comments until I see him play that position with us.

Even if Mahan/Kemo hold down the fort at left guard for the 2008 season, I don't think anyone here is saying those guys are good enough to be the long-term answer at that position.
That's the problem with the whole offensive line. The only entrenched (no pun intended) starter at a specific position is Kendall Simmons at right guard. And I could argue right guard is the easiest of the bunch to fill and more guys qualify to play it than any other line position.
It is a known fact that stability on the offensive line is an important factor to the unit's success. In 2007 we had two new starters. In 2008 we are looking at two more new starters (at least). In 2009, left tackle and probably left guard still look up in the air. In 2010, we're back at center being open. This is all with the assumption Colon stays right where he's at, which some say is out of position.
The problem of using B-rate players at these positions is you are constantly looking for replacements and turnover is an ever present thing. That's also why I'm not really in favor of just thinking 3rd and 4th rounders this year is going to help much and why I'm so in favor of a 1st round O-linemen. Nobody in round 3 or 4 is a definate plug and play type guy. You're talking guys equivalent to Starks and Colon in talent and adding more of them to the mix creates more confusion not less (unless we get really lucky).
Maybe I have less faith in our scouts to find offensive line talent anywhere except round 1 based on what I've seen for the past 3-4 drafts. I think we need to find just ONE guy that we know will permanently fill a spot on the line for a long time and we won't have to revisit that spot.

Not true a center has more of a chance to get beat at the snap resulting in bad positioning. Like Lefty says below has anyone seen Mahan play guard? Do we know if he will be a bad guard? Listen I am not at all sticking up for Mahan cause if I had my way I wouldn't keep him around but the fact he is still a Steelers and he is signed for 3 more yrs :-( we have to hope his problem was the loss of position after the snap. We have to remember our front office must have seen something(lord knows what) good in him to sign him and think he might be able to move to center.

I agree, and keep my fingers crossed for the best.

I know and I don't even like Mahan but I think it is wrong if people think center and guard are the same thing.

No, no, no. This post makes way too much sense for the "Mahan is worse than a bag of sand" crowd.
