View Full Version : Bengals turn down 2/#1's for CJ

How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands?
Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first round draft picks, team and league sources said.

The Bungles need to JUMP on that offer, after all Ocho Cinco doesn't want to play in Cinci (not that I blame him). He will most likely become a distraction and the last thing that team needs is another distraction. 2 first rounders for a player turning 30 is a great deal and I would except that in a heart beat, plus the raiders only got a 4th rounder for Randy Moss. I just don't see how not excepting this trade helps the Bungles at all. And thats why for years they have lived in the cellar of our division: STUPID MANAGEMENT!

I'd much rather have him than draft a WR in the first round. I dunno if i'd give up 2-#1's though.
I bet the Bengals want him to pay back some bonus money before he can leave town.

Perhaps Cincy knows the contingency that converts a 3rd rounder to a 1st rounder isn't gonna happen based on Washington's track record.

That tells you 2 things about the Redskins. First they need a WR and a tall one would be their choice. Secondly they don't believe a WR in this draft is worth their 21st pick. I see them going WR in the 2nd.
Cincy is in trouble as usual.

BENGALS NOT BUDGING
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports what we’ve been hearing for weeks — the Cincinnati Bengals will not trade receiver Chad Johnson.
“No matter the offer,” Schefter says. “No matter the circumstances. No deal.”
Last week, Johnson said that he wants to be traded before the draft. Or after it.
He won’t be. Before, during, or after.
The Bengals are proving a point here. Operating under a CBA that no longer permits them to use or enforce the “loyalty clause,” Johnson’s gross display of disloyalty means that the team will stick it to him whenever and wherever it can.
seemingly 100's of arrest and bad behavior and THIS is where they draw the line??

Yes. Re-negotiate the signing bonus into non-locked (salary) money and then trade. Only the bonus accelerates so if you put it back as salary then the massive cap hit goes away. Once the trade is done you have to redo the deal with the new team to get the locked money back.
I made that up but it sounds good.
If the biggest problem we have with Santonio Holmes is him taking pictures naked, then I'll be happy.

Washington is really hurting at WR so I wasn't surprised about them trading for Johnson. Im just shocked Cincy didn't take the trade. Cincy has no defense and an extra pick in a deep draft would do wonders in helping fix it. Johnson is going to be a disruption to the team and if your going to have someone who is that talented, become that big a cancer, then you need to get what you can out of him in a trade. Bad decision by Lewis and Co in not trading him to the Redskins because that is likely the best they will ever get for him.

I don't think it has anything to do with what they think about WR in this year's draft.
I think it hase everything to do with Daniel Snyder saying "Oooh, oooh!!! I had Chad Johnson in Fantasy Football a couple of years ago and boy did he score me a lot of points! Trade for him! Trade for him!!!" Like a spoiled 3 year-old in a toy store...

I think Snyders problem is he grew up a fan of a Redskins team that were able to build Super Bowl Champions by acquiring veteran players from other teams. He has failed terribly trying to do the same.

What I find unusual is that a team would want to even trade this late in the draft for a veteran player. Usually alot of teams will just wait and see what happens during the draft. Snyder is one of the few owners who likes dealing away picks for veterans this close to the draft. I guess the next question for the Bengals is how quick can Thurman show that he can fit right back in into the defense. If they aren't going to trade Johnson, I think they will have to go DL and LB with their first two picks because they are in pretty good shape everywhere else and they are going to have to get more production out of their pass rush if they hope to do anything this season.

Ive never owned a chad jersey.

Supe is on target. First off, Marvin Lewis denied in his press confrence today that the Bengals even received that offer. He said Mortenson must have gotten bad info. So I dont know yet if they really did get the offer.
If we trade chad before June 1, his cap hit would be $8 mil. Now team that up with having to pay an additional 1st round pick. At #21 that would be somewhere in the $3 mil range this season. That means trading chad would result in an $11 mil cap hit this year.
I think they may trade him...but not for picks this year, and not until after June 1. Marvin even called his bluff in the press conference saying chad is a man of his word....if he says he will sit, then sit. (Basically calling his bluff). The soap opera continues.

For the Bengals not to take that offer is expected from them. Of course they'd rather have a player that has already said he won't play for their team, than two first round draft picks. Washington really doesn't get it either. Makes me very grateful for our FO. I hope the Bengals get stuck with Chad, and suddenly it will hit them that they won't be getting anything out of him.

Two first round picks at the end of the round aren't that great. This year the dropoff after the top ten is pretty big. If they were to get at least one proven veteran starter and a one then maybe. The end of the first round is going to be a crapshoot this year for sure. Plus if you start a precedent that you can whine and get a trade they are setting themselves up for a lot more of the same. What a shame they're in this situation.

Everybody chill. They turned it down today. That doesn't mean they don't accept it on Saturday. Don't expose yourself this early in the draft. Bait the deal and get a steal pick in one fatal swoop, possibly damaging the hopes of direct competition. This may prove to be a shrewd move by Mike Brown's club.....no, they are a bunch of f*$@ing idiots down there, so i really doubt it! HAHAHAHAH!!!!!
As for El, I have always said i don't think his days with the Steelers are done...I don't think Washington would let him go based on getting Ocho Stinko, they would keep him for slot and special teams. But his days would be numbered. I'm thinking he comes back to the Steelers at vet min for the twilight of his career down the road.

The majority of the NFL owners/front offices are probably applauding Cincy's action right now more than anything else. This is a posturing move by Cincy. What everyone forgets is Chad's agent is Drew Rosenhaus. What Chad has been doing is the same tactic DR did with his other high profile players, TO (out of Philly), McGahee (out of Buffalo). Whine, complain, demand trade with a signed contract so as to go to another team and get a bigger contract. I am sorta glad Cincy is telling Ocho and DR to #$$&#& off and if Chad doesn't want to play football, then don't. You won't get paid either.
Half of the NFL teams regard DR with caution and I wouldn't be surprised if this keeps up with other players he gets slammed from the NFLPA agent certification. This trend he has done for his high profile players are hurting what the fans view of the players are.

04-22-2008, 11:46 PM
I may be in minority but I applaud what they are doing. What Stinko is doing is utterly ridiculous and is fast becoming a trend among disgruntled athletes. Personally I hope he gets retired Barry Sanders style and never plays again. Rosenhaus thinks he runs the NFL and having his whiney ass clients pulling tricks like this just fuels the fire.
Eventually the Bengals will have to fold because the offer will be too great and the fan backlash too brutal, but every second that gold toothed pussy has to stew earns a bit more respect in my book. The truth is this type of stand needs to happen I'm just glad we aren't the team in the position to make it.

While I agree that they are taking an admirable stance with what they are doing.....first round picks are like gold in the NFL. To be offered two for a WR is difficult to turn down, IMO.
Keep in mind, Randy Moss got traded for a 4th round pick.

I don't care how good he is, when you have a loose cannon like that who publicly doesn't want to be there, nothing good will come of it. They'll either get rid of him now or get rid of him later. They are being incredibly stupid not to pull off the bandaid now.

Dumbasses, you have a locker room cancer who has pretty much blasted the team, his head coach, and told his QB to mind his own business. Then you get a golden chance to trade him for a couple first round picks and you decline to do it. That's why you have been the laughing stocks of the NFL for the better part of 15 season.
