View Full Version : Ten things I think I think (Draft related)

1-Miami made the best choice. I am not against Dorsey, Long, or Gholston, but IF Jake Long fails at LT, he should be a solid RT for years. And, he can always move inside to LG. I just do not see the Dolphins not getting value out of his deal and IF he becomes another Joe Thomas, they have 4 pieces of a line in place for the next 4 seasons or so.

2-I think the Rams take Chris Long OR trade down and I think the team that wants the 2nd pick the most is the Saints. In fact, the Saints moving to #2 makes more sense than any other trade in the draft. The Saints want Glenn Dorsey, a hometown hero, that not only will make their team better, but will put butts in the seats. The cost, the 1st and 2nd this season and some future picks, at the very least, a 2nd and 3rd next season. Why would the Rams do this? There are rumors they are split on the pick, needing a DE but having Dorsey as the clear cut BPA. A trade down gives them value and allows them to add a DE like Derrick Harvey.

3-There are a couple guys I think slide in the first. I would be very surprised is Rodgers-Cromartie does not slide outside the top 15. His kidney issues have to make teams a little wary. I think that Ryan Clady has rubbed some teams wrong with his visits/interviews and could slide more than any other guy. In fact, I think that Chris Williams, Brandon Albert, and Jeff Otah go ahead of Clady.

4-There are some risers. Of course, Brandon Albert has rocketed, so he is obvious. Watch for Devon Thomas to go in the Top 20, maybe the Top 15. Derrick Harvey probably won't make it outside the top 10, but definitely won't go past Carolina. Three runningbacks will go top 20. Three defensive ends as well. I think the rush on DL probably pushes a guy like Balmer in the top 20.

5-Do the Raiders fill a need or take the hot pick in McFadden? IMO, I would draft Sedric Ellis. Not only is he a stud, they have issues on the defensive line. IMO, Ellis and Dorsey are top 5 talents, McFadden is not. My top 5 are Ellis, Dorsey, Long, Long, and Gholston....but I think Gholston has the biggest bust potential. With that said, the Raiders take McFadden. Maybe the worst kept draft secet.

6-Teams will not draft the tackles as readily as we think they will. With depth at tackle being stated as great, teams will opt to fill needs at other positions and wait because they feel they can get a tackle later. Carolina is watching a DE and RB. The Lions are watching the same DEs and RB as well as linebackers. Houston is watching RBs and corners. The Chiefs trade of Allen may kill our chances of getting a tackle. Certainly they will opt for one of the top 5 guys if they slide (and, IMO, this may kill the Ravens chance of getting Ryan).

7-I think the Eagles and Bills make a trade. Philly wants to secure a tackle. The Bills want a WR and like Devon Thomas. I think we see the Eagles use Lito Sheppard to move up to #11. The Bills would get a corner and a shot at the #1 WR while the Eagles could draft a better player without giving up a starter.

8-I do not think the Steelers take a corner in the first round. Talib has some issues that have surfaced and word is Dallas really likes him. Jenkins visited, but I do not think he gets past Tampa Bay and may be a target of Houston. Cason is the other guy that visited, but I think he is a target if we move down. The RBs are also very unlikely. I think the top 3 are gone and Chris Johnson, who visited, is a trade down target. If the Steelers fail to catch a sliding CB or RB, offensive lineman/trade down is the move and if it is a lineman, Cherilus is probably our guy.

9-I think the 2nd round target will be a pass rusher or wide receiver. The 3rd round targets are corners and defensive linemen.

10-No matter what happens in the first round, half the board will hate it, half will love it. There will be no Ben Roethlisberger unity on Saturday. How the front office performs on Sunday will determine how well our team will be in 2 seasons. Draft poorly, we have holes like we do now. Draft well, and we are reloading next season, not rebuilding.

My early top 10 prediction:
1-Jake Long (I am sure of this one)
2-Glenn Dorsey
3-Matt Ryan
4-Chris Long
5-Brandon Albert (I know, I know)
6-Vernon Gholston
7-Sedric Ellis (the Pats/Saints will trade if Ellis is here)
8-Leodis McKelvin
9-Keith Rivers
10-Derrick Harvey (another Pats trade)

I was in the East Club Lounge at Heinz Field when they made that pick and you would've thought we just won the Super Bowl, with the exception of one guy who was pissed.

Waiting 6 hours for one pick..........then 4 more hours till pick #2.

Then it's over for the day.

Who thought this was exciting?

1-Miami made the best choice.

Certainly a good one but he's being paid a lot of money to play right tackle - because he'll be an average to good LT but a great RT.

4-There are some risers. Three runningbacks will go top 20.

That will only help us if three RBs do go in the top 20.

8-...Cherilus is probably our guy.

Ugh. That would be a classic reach for a need. I hope not.

9-I think the 2nd round target will be a pass rusher or wide receiver. The 3rd round targets are corners and defensive linemen.

This is where the value is for our DE's for me. I'll be gutted if we don't address DE on day one.

10-No matter what happens in the first round, half the board will hate it, half will love it.

Never a truer word was typed! This is going to be one of the most divisive drafts for a long time as everyone will have an opinion of what we should / shouldn't have done.

Bearing in mind that most of the board want an OT/WR/CB/LB/S/whothefucksknows in the first round I think it could be closer to 80% will hate it and 20% will love it whatever happens.

Incidentally - I can't fucking wait for the draft. Should be great.

I wouldn't be disappointed with Cherilus at all. Just because he's projected as a RT doesn't mean he can't play LT, we have Smith and Starks at OT right now, both with a one year contract.

That was me, and I was wrong. I actually threw something at my TV I was so pissed.

Branden Albert, three weeks ago, was considered by many to be a reach for the Steelers at 23...

All of a sudden, TMC and the draft "experts" at ESPN--Mel Kiper and Todd McShay--all have him being drafted with the fifth selection.

What did I miss?

Alot of people think he can move to LT and be very good.

I read some of that too, Slu. No one wanted him because he wasn't from a big school with top notch competition.

I heard that had he stayed at RT this past season, he would have likely been the #2 OT prospect in the draft and playing LT hurt his stock significantly.

I got really drunk from celebrating that pick and had to sober up again before R2...

Yeah, he's more than likely going to be a full time RT in the NFL, but we need help there too. I guess I just can't see passing on an OT, left or right, that grades out as a first round pick after we just gave our QB to biggest, by far, contract in team history. And after the beating he took last year.

IMO, if you have a RT prospect that can be Leon Searcy, Willie Anderson, etc. then I don't care in the slightest if he can play LT and I would never worry that i spent a #1 pick on them.

I thought it was a great pick. I was building a deck and listening to the draft. I can tell you which joist I was attaching and which screw I was putting in when I heard' "...And with the 11th pick..........."

As soon as I heard the Commish say "with the 10th pick the Houston Texans select" I knew Ben was ours. I was just worried someone was going to trade into the 10th spot and get him, wasn't worried about the Texans taking him.

Let me state this, I have Albert going in the top 10 because the people that know more than me have him going in the top 10. IF he were there at #23 and Chris Williams was there at #23, Albert would STILL be there at #24. IMO, he is the best guard in the draft but probably the 6th best offensive lineman.

I also would not take Vernon Gholston in the top 20. I think both are borderline first rounders on the field and have risen sharply due to workouts. I tend to shy away from those guys.

I don't think the Texans are really looking for a RB in round one....either a CB or OL....possibly another DL

I know I'm probably wrong on this but I don't like Gholston at all. He maybe a HOFer by the end of his career but I don't like him as a player.

I don't care for Gholston either. He seems to disappear in big games - not good for adjusting to the next level.

I think Albert may be the second best OL prospect in the draft.

Being in attendance at Heinz Field the day Ben was drafted I distinctly recall two thunderous roars from the crowd. When Philip Rivers was picked and when we got Ben.
