I think we've touched all the bases...No Otah, no King, no Balmer.
Everyone else could work...
But who am I?

Aqib Talib or Limas Sweed
Not because I think either is a bad player. I just think that if tone of these two is there at 23they'll provide some good bait to trade out of the first which I think would provide the best possible draft this year.
I won't bitch if they grab one of these guys I'm just hoping for the trade.

Balmer would make me about as nauseous as Timmons did last year. King would be fine...in the second round.
I was initially put off by the thought of taking Stewart, but the idea is growing on me. If he's still available at 23, there's considerable value there.

I still see the huge upside of selecting WR Hardy (or Sweed) to open up our offense. Granted, many of us believe that a 1st rounder doesn't have to start immediately to pay dividends and if we go with either, they will come in as the 3rd WR and help this team significantly. Hardy and Holmes on the outside with Ward in the slot is a very potent attack. Then we look to shore up the OL and DL in rounds 2 and 3.
I do not feel comfortable reaching for a OL just because it is a huge need. Cherilus is no LT and I am not convinced that Starks can play LT long term. Then, if Colon can't make the switch to G, we have a log jam at RT. Give me a guy with potential in round 2 or 3 who can learn to play LT and go for another position in the 1st if no one falls.

Tough question because I'm so down on the Steelers front office this off-season, I am already preparing myself for the worst.
However, to answer the question, I'm going to say Philip Merling. I just have a feeling he's a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none and I don't see a fit in our scheme at all. Either he will sit on the bench while he get's stronger, or he's never going to get stronger and be invisible on the field.
Granted, there are a LOT of prospects that worry me: Otah, Balmer, Talib, Sweed, Hardy, Kelly, Phillips, etc. but for each of those there seems to be a fit with the Steelers if they play to their potential.
Merling reminds me of Timmons. A consensus mid-level 1st rounder but putting him on the Steelers doesn't help much at all and screams of the "tweener" 3-4/4-3 players we seem to be interested in now. I'm really against these types of players.

I think we can all agree that the Steelers should NOT draft me.
Sure, I wish they would and all... but really it couldn't be considered to be in the best interests of the team.
If I am taken with the 23rd pick though... I promise I won't fake any injuries. I'll go balls-out right up until Woodley, Polomalu, Smith or whomever crushes my faint NFL dreams with a legal but vicious hand-off of the water bottle in the first team-meeting.

In no order......
Urrutia WR Louisville- Good size and ability but is slow and has a temper. Don't want him as a draft pick but would give him a shot as a FA.
Hart RB Mich- Tons of talent but just can't stay healthy in college what will he be like in the pros, with so much depth at this position I want to pass here. Plus as a high school senior his scholl kicked my son's school's ass in the state semi's on their way to a state title...#@$#%^&#@%!!!!!!!!! lol
Richardson OT Clemson- This is my number one don't want he is bad. looked super slow against lesser talent at senior bowl. If we draft this guy we better be drafting a QB of the future cause Ben will die with this guy.
Albert OG Virgina- Sky rocketed so fast after his work out withou pads, I will eat my words if I am wrong but just don't have a good feeling about this guy, especially in the 1st round.
Lichtensteiger C Bowling Green- Very slow and week if it weren't for Richardson this guy would have been the worst oline at the senior bowl.
Justice C Wake Forest- Same as above but not quite as bad.
No TE's, K's or P's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now lets start a thread of who we would love to have.......

Balmer - because he's a one year wonder
King - too much negative stuff around for him to be the real deal.

What scares me is the "Troy Edwards" pick. Reaching for need rarely works. If the BPA is for better than the need, you have to go BPA (assuming it isn't QB, tight end, etc).
Also, I believe our DL needs just as much help as our OL. When Smith went down, our DL crashed and burned.

IMO, both generate a strong push in the running game but are very questionable in pass protection. They are Max Starks clones.

You mean the slow one who had punt return TDs of 92 and 89 yards this past year?
Naw, i love Nelson, but that's not why I don't like Hardy. Tall + lazy = usually slacks and doesn't pan out. I'll take Houshmandzadeh over Charles Rogers any day of the week.

Height : Hardy 6'6" - Nelson 6'3"
40 time : Hardy 4.45 - Nelson 4.51
Vertical Leap : Hardy 37 inches - Nelson - 31 inches
Bench Press : Hardy 18 reps - Nelson - skipped due to weakeness
Senior year TDs : Hardy 18 - Nelson 11
Not even close. Not saying Nelson is bad or will be bad but he's Ed McCaffery. Possession guy. That's the last thing we need at WR. Nelson scares nobody and won't stretch the field or be as good as Hardy in the red zone.

Sorry, but I don't gush over combine results as much as some folks do.
Slow? Like I said, the long punt returns and the fact that he SCHOOLED Aqib Talib repeatedly tells me he's not slow. Can you point out the source of the McCaffrey comparisons?
Bad vertical? Whatever. He found a way to catch about 900 passes last year in a run-first offense with a mediocre QB.
Sometimes, vertical jumps at the combine don't tell the whole story. Nelson has been productive as a deep threat and as a possession guy. Like I said before, give me Housh over Charles Rogers, Antonio Bryant or R.Jay Soward any day. You seem to have "he's tall, so that means he's excellent" syndrome. Workout warrior anyone?
And, hey, lookie at Nelson going early in the 2nd. Seems to high for an Ed McCaffrey clone.
