Interestingly, the speculators at www.thehuddlereport.com show Jerod Mayo going at 15 to Detroit and Gosder Cherlius OT Boston College going at 23 to the Steelers. Most sites seeem to point to Cherilus as the pick at #23.
Mayo has also reportly been tipped to go as high as #7 to Billicheat and the Pats.
It looks like the odds on favorite is Cherilus.

other Mock's have Phillip Merling falling into the Steelers lap.

I would be happy with that pick.

Well, that's a little more concrete than anything else out there. I'm trying to think the last time Gosselin didn't get the Steelers pick right. Hit the last 3 for sure. Maybe Ben too.
I like Mayo. His injury history is a concern tho. IMO, he's everything they hoped Timmons was, and more. He's a superior Willis-type athlete. He started two years. One weakside, one inside. He's smart, he's tough, plays with pain, hard worker, film-rat, leader. He's a legit candidate for Farrior's successor.

I wouldn't hate Mayo as the pick although I do think the Cheatriots drop back in the first and grab him.

I am cool with any of those picks you guys threw out there, Mayo, Merling, or Cherlius. Hell they are doing thier mock on the NFL Network and McKelvin falling to us, don't think there is a chance in hell for that but would love it. Gosselin has been dead on the last few years so if he is right again will this board blow up since it will be the 2nd year in a row we went LB in the first?

it would be funny to have a player we can call Mayo-naise.

Mayo could take over for Farrior and hopefully Timmons will take over for Foote........ With our lack of depth at OLB I would still rather have Groves.

I agree. Groves just looks to be a better fit for our defense.

The Sacramento Bee, our local rag, has us picking Jonathan Stewart RB from Oregon.

As much as I'd love it, we're not getting Groves. Every year I covet a LB, ( Demeco Ryans, Patrick Willis, etc...) we never land 'em. I'd be cool with Mayo.

I also think Grooves would be a better fit for our D than Mayo (but I haven't watched a ton of Tennessee games over the past couple of years either.)

I'm OK w/ Mayo...
Balmer, on the other hand, would make my head explode.

I'm still unsure on Balmer. I wouldn't mind it as much if they traded down and ended up getting him, I could live with that better. I just think he's an absolute reach at 23 though.
Now Mayo, he's a hell of a talent and I wouldn't mind it at all. Farrior is on the last year of his deal, and if they go into '09 with Mayo and Timmons on the inside, talk about having some athletic playmakers.

Selecting Mayo would be idiotic.

would be muvch happier e entire bord with Mayo instead of balmer, we would have the middle set for at least 1/2 a decade with Timmons at RILB and Mayo at LILB.
would keep the LB rotations fresh as both can play outside as well, we can get tomlin the dl depth he wants with bryant or okam later.

The people that didn't want Stewart because he wouldn't start probably want Balmer over Mayo too.
I'd be okay w/ Mayo . . . until the first Sunday night game when I have to hear John Madden trip over his own tongue about how the other team is "holding the Mayo . . ."

if Mayo ever tackles Charlie Frye, Madden would pop.

I have probably seen about 3 dozen mocks. Of these probably ten of them are pretty consistenet over the years in accuracy and most of them have us picking Cherilus. Gosselin and Kiper are the most accurate over the last 15 years as to where kids actually get picked. I would have to say Mayo and Balmer both are very good considerations and will be certainly in our raqnge if we do decide to pull the trigger on either of them.

Mayo would be great for me. Merling would be better.
I did see a recent mock that had Stewart going as high as #7
