Scouting Report
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD style="PADDING-RIGHT: 6px" vAlign=top>The Good: The wide-bodied super strong interior mauler has been a thee-time all-conference player while starting for the Thundering Herd. As a run blocker, he is quick on the snap with the ability to get his hands on and control a defender. He usually uses sound positioning with the ability to stay between his man and the quarterback.
The Bad: As a pass blocker, he has adequate footwork, but he lacks the ideal quickness and power to strike an opponent early on the down to gain a fast advantage. His weight room numbers are of supreme quality, but this is partially tempered by his having very short arms, which gives him a leverage advantage when lifting. That strength rarely translates to the playing field. He is the type who will always have better weight room numbers than production on the field.
Outlook: Legursky is a possible late pick but most likely a free agent signee.

Good FA signing. He is a big guy, not like a lot of 285 lb. centers who would never be able to stand up to Ngota and some other big boys in the AFC North.
Wonder what this means about Stapleton?

He could have just as easily been our 5th round pick and had Dixon as the FA signee, except that Dixon wouldnt have been available as a FA. Had that happened all the people crying about OL wouldn't be saying poop right now, but we would be in a worse position. Splendid job by the FO.

I've been pretty edgy about the center position but counted on the Steelers to get walk-ons, etc and not just depend on the draft. Hey, we got Donny Shell as a walk-on.

"His weight room numbers are of supreme quality, but this is partially

Vis needs to step in here. He's very insightful.
So, the list of who we got is:
Doug Legursky, C, Marshall
Julian Rauch, K, Appalachian State
Micah Rucker, WR,
Dorian Bryant, WR, Purdue
Honestly, I know Bryant is small, but he is a pretty good slot receiver. I was sure Bryant and Legursky would go in the later rounds.

Dykes was one of the 30 players in for a visit. I hope he gets signed. I liked Spanos as a f/a center but thats not likely now. Darnell Terrell the Missouri db has a shot at making an NFL team. He is a s/cb not sure where he is better but he has a shot.
That Rutgers OT may be worth a look.

Dykes signed with the Cards.
Terrell is a Brown.
I do not think they pursue Spanos or Sosa (Rutgers) because both were thought to be guards and Legursky is projecting to guard. IMO, you get too many guys in here, you cut the reps and end up cutting a guy that may be better than another. I would stick with Legursky as my interior guy. If Colon does kick down, that is 7 interior OL battling for 5 spots (Simmons, Kemo, Hartwig, Mahan, Stapleton, Colon, and Legursky).
I would like to see them add 2-3 DEs, a NT, another OLB prospect, maybe an ILB, a DB, and a TE.
That would be enough for me.....I am a simple guy.

I really always thought Sosa was better than Zuttah..at least on the field...Zuttah climbed so high as a work out warrior.. Sosa started at LT for RU...for a reason...but I'm fine not bringing him in as TMC said how many lineman can you bring to camp....I would still love to see Foster brought in...did he sign anywere yet?

Until these guys are inked, they are only committed. I won't hold my breath waiting either. Once there is a contract, then I'll believe these FAs are coming in.
I think Foster from Rutgers is a guy the Steelers have to be chasing pretty hard. It was felt he could develop into a LDE in the 3-4, probably not this year, but in 2-3. He has to add a little size.
I would not mind seeing Brian Mattison of Iowa come in here and get a shot. He may be a guy that could contribute day 1 at DE. A coaches son that understands the game and plays with good technique.
Now, I do also think we will probably chase Curtis Johnson of Clark-Atlanta to come in and try to win an OLB spot. I think he will be a big target for us. He would be a ROLB.
Those three would make me very happy.

Travis Williams has some speed... clocked at 4.3 seconds in the 40. That's not disadvantageous for a corner...
A jet-quick and electrifying fan favorite who will enter senior season battling junior Leon Best for a starting position at one of the cornerback positions ... Gained initial popularity by taking advantage of a special teams opening created by an injury (2004) and quickly developed into one of the most feared punt return men in college football ... Although he assumed top punt return job during the last two games of the 2006 campaign, overall service as program's return specialist has diminished in last two seasons under new coaching staff ... Yet, still remains as a preseason All-Conference USA selection (punt returner) by Phil Steele Magazine and Athlon Sports ... Also ranks among the nation's top 11 punt returners according to Phil Steele Magazine ... Publication also selected him to the preseason all-league squad as a defender (third-team) ... Offers plenty of speed, quickness and a fearless approach to his repertoire ..

Donovan Woods Signs With Steelers
Former Oklahoma State linebacker Donovan Woods is the first known Cowboy player from this year's rookie class to sign a free agent contract with the NFL. Woods signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers shortly after the end of the NFL Draft, according to a family source.
Woods, who led the Cowboys in tackles last season with 82 total, six tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception, and two forced fumbles, was also the Defensive MVP in Oklahoma State's 49-33 win over Indiana in the Insight Bowl.
Woods, who is 6-2, 235 pounds, also played quarterback and safety during his Cowboy career. Several teams had shown interest in Woods who tested well on the OSU Pro Day, but it was the Steelers that employ a 3-4 defense that made the strong move to sign the former Millwood High School star from Oklahoma City.
Woods is the third member of his family to sign an NFL contract. His older brother Rashaun was a first-round pick in the NFL Draft in 2003 of the San Francisco 49ers. His other older brother, D'Juan, is currently a wide receiver with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Potential Day Two Draft Gems (http://www.profantasysports.com/pp.php?PID=9434)
Dorian Bryant, Purdue (5-10, 169): His small build is a detriment, but his speed and hands makes Bryant worthy of consideration by NFL scouts. He'll need to add some weight at the next level if he wants to compete on offense, otherwise he's best suited as a kick or punt returner. He needs to take his game up a notch.

I saw a lot of high school tape of this kid and watched him on and off in college... He orginally committed to Boston College but went to a year of prep school and then committed to Purdue... He was a top 10 WR coming out of high school and really didn't play badly at Purdue...
I agree completely with that assessment... He really does have a chance, if he can show off his speed in the return game, to make this squad...

The blessing: He found the woman of his dreams, Rebecca Fissehastion Yacob.
The curse: Minnesota had tons of talent at running back and used it often.
Rucker transferred to Eastern Illinois, Tony Romo's alma mater. In two seasons he pulled in 104 catches for 1,743 yards and 22 touchdowns. However, with the chance to showcase his talent came unthinkable pain.
Rucker's girlfriend, whom he met and fell in love with at Minnesota, was killed by a drunk driver. Rucker responded by creating a campus organization, Respect for Youth, to fight drunk driving. A far cry from the character issues attached to so many names of college prospects.
I talked to Rucker about his past and this weekend's draft.
ruckerwithball.jpgCampus Confidential: Take me from your days as a big time prospect in Florida to today. What has all of this been like for you?
Micah Rucker: Man, going back to five years ago there has been so much ... I don’t know where to start. It's really just a blessing to be still playing football and getting the opportunity to play professionally! I am truly blessed. There have been many ups and downs, but my parents have led me to where I am today. I will be graduating on May 4, so all is well. Hard work is the key to anything.
CC: Guys like Devin Thomas, Limas Sweed, DeSean Jackson and Malcolm Kelly have been names thrown around in the first round. Have you seen tape of them? Are they a good representation of the class? How do you feel about this WR draft class top to bottom?
MR: Well, there are a bunch of good receivers out there. My Pro Day numbers speak for themselves [Rucker worked out at the Illinois Pro Day]. My biggest question was speed. 4.47 changed that. So, now they've got to find something else to talk about. I have better Pro Day numbers top to bottom than any wideout out there this year. 4.47 40-yard, 42" vertical, 11.3 broad jump, 20 reps on the bench, 11.2 sixty ... God has a great plan for me. I just want the opportunity and we can go from there!
CC: Why did you leave the University of Minnesota?
MR: I wanted to go somewhere where my talents could be biggest and where I could make plays. So Eastern gave me a great opportunity that I am thankful for.
CC: What does it mean to see guys like Terrell Owens and Tony Romo – "small school guys" – succeed in the league?
MR: The League is an equal opportunity employer! If you can play, you can play, it doesn't matter where your from. Marques Colston, [Tony] Romo, Joe Horn ... Hard work can really do wonders and talent can't be stopped. I'm happy to represent Eastern Illinois, it is a great place.
CC: If you could go back and do everything over, would anything change?
MR: I would change nothing. You know, I have learned and met a lot of great people along the way. ... Minnesota taught me a lot. I met the woman of my dreams there who eventually passed away, but I had a great time learning about football and life. ... When I speak to kids I let them know about what I've been through and what it takes. Right is better then wrong and I preach that.
CC: What are your strengths? Weaknesses?
MR: Size, speed, strength, raw ability. I just need to learn and listen, which I love doing. Route running is key for me and having someone teach me to stay low during routes. I want to learn and take everything in and all will be OK.
CC: Sell yourself to an NFL GM in 30 words.
MR: Everyone has talent at the NFL level. Hard work and desire are what pay off. Heart is something I have and hard work is what I pride myself on. I love learning and I love the game of football. Fear of failure is key for me, so I work day and night to help my team. I love working with people and hate to lose.

TMC, since it came up, any thoughts on McBean? He seems like a prototypical 3-4 end, size-wise...
John Mitchell commenting on him last year...
http://news.steelers.com/article/76056/
I am probably one of the few that saw McBean as a 3-4 end instead of a DT. He was good against the run and showed the ability to push the pocket. He also can get himself skinny and shoot gaps, which I liked. The thing is, he needed to learn the playbook, get better with his hands, and add more functional strength. He also has to work on keeping his feet moving, but IMO, was a much better DE prospect than Keisel was at the same point in thier careers.

Then I would consider you one of the few. In fact, I distinctly remember arguing with people after the last draft about McBean. There were some arguing that we were moving to a Cover-2 and McBean was evidence of that, he did not fit in the 3-4. I argued that he did.
If I omitted anyone on the McBean bandwagon, I apologize. I think he will turn out.

One of the school's fan favorites, Williams was one of ECU's most versatile athletes. He saw action carrying, catching, returning and defending the ball. The nation's fourth-leading punt returner as a freshman, the cornerback is blessed with exceptional speed, utilizing his athletic ability to challenge the opponent's best receiver.
In '07 preseason camp, Williams suffered a high ankle sprain that limited his performance early in the season, as he saw limited action vs. Virginia Tech and slowly worked his way back into the rotation. Through 10 games and nine starts at weak-side cornerback, he posted 56 tackles (35 solo) with 2 1/2 stops for losses and a forced fumble. He intercepted one pass and deflected three others. In 43 games at East Carolina, Williams started 18 times on defense and once on offense. He registered 135 tackles (90 solo) with five stops for losses totaling 11 yards. He recovered one fumble and caused two others. He deflected 13 passes and picked off three others while also blocking a kick. He gained 517 yards with a touchdown on 39 punt returns (13.3-yarad average) and 249 yards on 11 kickoff returns (22.6 avg). He also rushed once for a one-yard loss and caught two passes for eight yards.

Positives: Smaller than ideal, but has a muscular upper-body frame with a tight abdomen, good chest thickness, broad shoulders and muscular thighs and calves. … Has the short-area quickness to cover ground in the zone and shows good anticipation skills combating the receivers for the pass, keeping himself between his man and the ball. … Has the plant-and-drive ability to mirror a receiver while showing fluidity in his motions. … Displays the vision and ability to stay tight with the receivers on deep routes. … Natural interceptor with soft hands and has the hip flexibility and acceleration to provide an explosive closing burst. … Tough wrap-up tackler with good explosion coming out of his backpedal. … Handles the switch well dropping in the zone. … Alert of the ball in flight, showing good timing leaping up to get to the ball. … Keeps track of the ball in flight and knows how to get his body between the receiver and the pigskin. … Catches with his hands extended and shows aggression going for the ball in tight quarters. … Has that top-end quickness and burst out of his breaks to catch receivers from behind, as he is quick to react to the deep ball, showing natural hands to make the interception. … Despite his size, has been very effective jamming receivers at the line. … He stopped opponents from getting into their routes on 26 pass plays in 2007. … Even with his slight frame, he can deliver forceful tackles when he stays low in his stance. … Has an explosive short-area burst and fluid hip swerve turning to redirect out of his backpedal. … Looks very natural flowing towards the ball, showing no hesitation when reacting to the play. … Sees routes develop with no problems, sinking under the deep action while displaying patience when reacting to the action in front of him. … Has the burst and second gear to cover ground immediately when the receivers gets by him.
Negatives: Lacks ideal size and bulk, but is a strong tackler. … Legs are shorter than ideal, causing him to struggle in attempts to mirror long-striders on deep routes (see 2007 Memphis matchup vs. Carlos Singleton). … Adequate tackler, but needs to refine his technique, as he will ankle bite often in run support, allowing the ballcarriers to side-step his low hits. … Struggles academically, leading to concerns that he will have problems digesting a complicated playbook. … Stays tight with the receiver on deep routes and has good vision tracking the ball in flight, but eyes the backfield too long and then takes some false steps when trying to recover. … Marginal tackler in run support, as he lacks the size and strength to step up and fill the alleys. … Has good hand punch to reroute receivers, but needs to be more active with his hands playing off blocks, as blockers can wash him out of the play once they lock on to his jersey. … Sometimes gets too overconfident in his good closing burst, allowing too much of a cushion, resulting in the opponent having success vs. him throwing underneath. … Liability covering the taller receivers due to his lack of size, but tries to compensate with his good elevation competing for jump balls. Compares To: TORRIE COX-Tampa Bay. … Like Cox, Williams has great speed to play in the deep secondary. He is undersized and this is evident when he takes on the bigger receivers, but has experience on special teams. His ankle injury prevented him from handling punt-return chores in the professional ranks, as he did rank fourth nationally in that category as a freshman.

Amen to that!
Okay, let me make these comments about our "new" Steelers:
Patrick Bailey, LB, Duke-6'4"-230, played LB and then moved down to end. A project at OLB. Fairly productive......
Dorien Bryant, WR, Purdue-Just under 5'10" and about 190, Bryant looks like he was born to play the slot. He really does well with a little space and is a pretty good return guy to boot. I thought someone would snap him up on the 2nd day. Should be a bright spot.
Doug Legursky, C, Marshall-a shorter than ideal, squatty type player with excellent power. He is not going to get to the 2nd level, but we struggle to stop guys at the line. Lets fix first things first. Of all things, he may be the best center we have when anchoring the bullrush. Needs technique work but is an extremely hard worker and student of the game.
Roy Lewis, CB, Washington-at 5'11-190, he somewhat reminds me of Deshea Townsend. He is not going to wow you with speed, but he gets his hands on the football. Might make it as a passing down guy, special teamer. Speed is not great.....
Mike Potts, QB, William & Mary-only played 6 games as a Senior. Replaced the starting QB around October.....played well, very unknown commodity. Mike Tomlin throwing an Alumni a bone?
Martavius Prince, DL, Southern Miss-was considered one of the best run stopping DTs by Sporting News. At 6'3"-287 pounds, he could be one to watch. While considered a run stopper, he also was 2nd on the team in sacks (6.5). A sleeper.
Julian Rauch, K, Appalachian State-I do not have high hopes, but I really never have liked Jeff Reed and I have always hated kickers. The thing is, Reed and his antics really piss me off. I should not have to worry about a kicker partying too hard. I hope he beats out Reed....or not, who really gives a fuck.
Micah Rucker, WR, Eastern Illinois-a highly recruited guy coming out of High School. A Minnesota transfer that has had some tough breaks off the field. Definitely a guy we can all root for. I hope like hell he sticks. He is the high character guy every team needs. Of course, being 6'6" with a monster vertical and speed will help his case. Lets hope for flypaper hands and fearlessness over the middle.
Jordan Reffett, DL, Washington-he is 6'6"-300 pounds. He looks like Chris Hope, plays like Bob Hope. I really do not expect much. Team Captain, well liked, does not produce much.
Dezmond Sherrod, TE, Mississippi State-when you don't draft one, you have to bring one in. I think he had like 7 career receptions. At 6'3"-245, he better block like a Mack Truck. Seven damn catches in a career.........Vrabel has him beat.
Travis Williams, CB, East Carolina-good speed, return guy, has the tools that could be developed. He has to work to develop them though. Has gotten by on what God gave him until now.
Donovan Woods, LB, Oklahoma State-very interesting guy to me. Rashaun Woods (49ers-1st round WR) is his brother. A former starting QB for OSU, moved to safety and won the starting job, then moved to linebacker. In some quick highlights, he is a thumper with range. A 225 pounds safety playing linebacker that delivers some wood. Replacement for Farrior? He interests me.

It still seems odd that every fan hated our DL and OL play (for the most part) and swore that is all we should draft. Then they don't draft any DL and only one OL. Then UDFAs come in and we only sign one OL and two DL. Either we are way off the mark with what the FO thinks or they thought this class sucked adn they know a lot of good OL and DL will be coming out next year.

Speaking of which - TMC or anyone else - any knowledge of these guys? And before anyone opens their trap with - why don't we play this year first blah blah blah - I'm trying to work out in my head why we ignored DL and OL this year so I'm looking towards the next draft for answers.
All 5 of these OTs sound incredible. I know we'll probably draft too low for Oher but the others? That last Unger guy sounds great with even a mention of best zone blocking OT. And as a Buckeye fan I'd love to get Boone. He's solid all around.
Offensive Tackles
Michael Oher, Ole Miss
Height: 6'5 - Weight: 325
Michael Oher is a big physical tackle, who would have been a first round draft pick this year.
Phil Loadholt, Oklahoma
Height: 6'8 - Weight: 352
Loadholt is a huge tackle, who could develop into one of the best tackle in the NFL.
Alex Boone, Ohio State
Height: 6'8 - Weight: 325
Alex Boone contemplated entering the draft this year, but will be a first round selection in 2009.
Andre Smith, Alabama
Height: 6'5 - Weight: 333
Smith is extremely quick for his size. He's slowly lost a lot of weight in Nick Saban's new work out program, which has benefited his play
Max Unger, Oregon
Height: 6'5 - Weight: 306
Max Unger will be the best zone blocking tackle in the 2009 draft.
DE sounds bad for next year though. This guy is the only one this site lists in their top 5 that isn't a tweener:
Defensive Ends
Tyson jackson, LSU
Height: 6'5 - Weight: 292
Jackson is a huge defensive end who can play in the 4-3 or the 3-4.
Defensive Tackles
Fili Moala, USC
Height: 6'4 - Weight: 295
Moala has good speed and pass rushing moves at the defensive tackle position. He tops the list because he can play in the cover two, the 4-3, or play end in the 3-4.
Al Woods, LSU
Height: 6'5 - Weight: 324
Al Woods is the only true nose tackle on this list. He's big, and has a good motor. Woods will help any 3-4 defense at the nose tackle.
DeMarcus Granger, Oklahoma
Height: 6'3 - Weight: 300
Every year, Granger loses a little weight and gets a little quicker. He's a penetrating tackle who gets into the back field regularly.
Terrence Taylor, Michigan
Height: 6'0 - Weight: 310
Taylor is very quick for his size, and has the best technique of any defensive tackle on this list.
Sen'Derrick Marks, Auburn
Height: 6'1 - Weight: 291
Yet another quick defensive tackle, who would fit perfectly into a cover 2 scheme.

Either we are way off the mark with what the FO thinks or they thought this class sucked adn they know a lot of good OL and DL will be coming out next year.
Or they figured our O-line wasn't going to magically get any better than what we had last year.....looked at the schedule and figured if it all went to crap we could at least get a true #1 OT in the Top 10 next year.

FYI notables
Buccaneers sign Tommy Blake
Colts sign Jamie Silva
Eagles sign Adarius Bowman
Oher, Loadholt, and Boone ALL flirted with coming out this draft. Oher and Loadholt were felt to be either the 2nd-4th OT coming off the board. They both probably would have went ahead of Clady. Boone would have went with Clady or Williams. I believe Andre Smith would be a junior coming out early and he is considered a stud with great upside because he is cutting weight and getting faster. Sean Sester of Purdue is a LT in a passing system. Some sleepers that could explode as seniors are Eugene Monroe (played beside Albert at Virginia), Andrew Gardner (GT), and Dallas Reynolds (BYU).
It could become another pretty good OT class AND with all the OTs going this draft, some teams will pass early next year. I seriously doubt teams go OT in back to back drafts with their first rounders.
As far as defensive linemen for us, at defensive end, Tyson Jackson is a stud. The PURE defensive ends will emerge, but some guys to watch are Kyle Moore (USC) and Derek Walker (Ill). The conversion guys are Jason Chapman (Wisc), Jeff Owens (Ga), Darryl Richard (GT), Matt Kroul (Iowa), and Rashad Jackson (Clemson-I know, another fucking Clemson DL).
As for NTs, Sen'Derrick Marks of Auburn is a beast. Terrence Taylor of Michigan is one to watch. He will eat a ton of double teams. A few more are Granger (OK), and Myron Pryor (KY). Boston College has a monster run stopping NT that was just declared ineligible.
No draft really looks that good until November. There are some players that really bloom as Seniors.
And, as far as the interior OL, Duke Robinson will be there. Alex Mack of Cal will graduate. There there is Jeremy Perry (played with Schuening) and Cedric Dockery (brother of Derrick). That is 4 interior studs.
The next draft looks to be poor at QB and RB unless some juniors prop it up.

And at 6-2 282 Martavius Prince isn't a DL in our system. He would be steamrolled in a 3-4 DL position. So we really only brought 1 in.
Personally I think the coach have talked themselves into believing that the OL and DL aren't as bad as people say. I think they are nuts but we will see.

I have to believe they are going to bring in a vet DL player after some cuts have been made. They know Eason and Kirschke suck. I'm sure they have seen enough film.
Also they are banking on McBean playing this year.

He's still recovering from a stress fracture in his foot. If he's shown the coaches anything this offseason, it's from the inside of a hot tub. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Not at all, Dixon and Hills need company in the tub, that way it won't seem so ghey.
Travis Williams
Height: 5-9 | Weight: 180 | Position:CB | College: East Carolina
A 5'9" corner, hell why don't we draft a jockey from the Kentucky Derby.
Spud Webb er T Williams should go to the NBA.

That's it right there. Coaching staffs spend the vast majority of the year watching film. They can identify weakness' a lot better than we can. To add, they are held accountable in the end.
I believe that they know and understand where the problem area's are but we're all damned if we know what they plan to do about it...and when.
That said, signing a real C is indentifying a real problem. Drafting 2 LB's last year to play THIS year is another area that has been looked at. Getting a stud RB and WR fixes 2 other problem area's. The return of A Smith will help a great deal.
But.....OL and DL, it's all there on film. Right? I believe that they've put themselves in the position of NOT being able to pick the BPA in next year's draft. And every other team will know it.

That is just absurd. Luis Castillo has played RDE for the Chargers for 3 years and he is 6'3"-290. In fact, they got him to drop 10 pounds to increase his speed. I cannot see how 1" and 8 pounds can make that much difference. Castillo has 119 tackles and 13 sacks in 3 seasons. He is a monster for them. I would easily take a guy with Castillo's size and production over a lot of bigger DEs....guys like Orien Harris.
As for Prince, I am sure that is the height/weight the Steelers listed him at, but CNNSI had him listed at 6'3"-287. At his Pro Day, he measured in at 6017-285. And, he is considered a run stopper first, pass rusher second, which fits our defensive mentality. As a Senior, he had 40 tackles, 10.5 TFLs, and 6.5 sacks. In 2006, he had 49 tackles, 15.5 TFLs, and 3 sacks.
This was said about him in a Preview to this season:
"Martavius Prince, a standout run-stuffer coming off a breakout campaign. In his first year as a regular, he had 49 tackles, a team-high 15 tackles for loss and three sacks, laying the foundation for what’ll be an even better final season."
Now, I am not attempting to state he is the 2nd coming of anyone, but he has enough sand in his shorts to play the run. If anything, he is a little shorter than ideal, but he plays the run well and has shown he can get to the QB, which is something our current group of DEs struggle to do.
I would not write him off just yet.

From a "looks good in shorts" view, you really have to like Micah Rucker and Donovan Woods.
At his Pro Day, Rucker was 6'5"-217 lbs, ran the 40 in 4.57 and 4.47, had a 39" vertical jump, 11'3" long jump, 4.57 short shuttle, 6.90 cone drill, 20 reps in the bench press. Those numbers are comparable to Sweed's combine. Now, I am not saying Rucker is a better player, just has better workout numbers.
Donovan Woods ran the 40 in 4.70, had a 35-1/2" vertical jump, 10'1" long jump, 4.40 short shuttle, 7.28 cone drill, 21 reps in the bench press. He is a converted QB to safety to MLB. He is listed at 6'2"-230 and will need to add some bulk to his upper body, but he could surprise.

That is good that you are an OK State fan, then you can tell me your feelings on Donovan Woods, LB....as it appears he has inked with the Steelers.
jack of all trades...QB S LB...great athelete...just never has had a chance to develop at any one position...brother was Rashaun Woods WR drafted by SF that couldn't ever get away from injuries...sad because he was a great talent...other brother is a WR with JAX i think...
if they find a spot where Donovan can stick and learn...he'll probably be a decent player...but he's just been playing on pure talent up till now...so he'd be a project...
as a LB...he was solid...always around the ball...i believe he led the team in tackles...but from a defensive standpoint...OSU wasn't all that good last year...as a S he made several plays...as a QB he was kordellesque...from really good to really bad...
i think they could just about try him anywhere and he'd be serviceable...but i don't know that he'll ever be great in any one position...he's just a great athelete...

Loadholt is a huge tackle, who could develop into one of the best tackle in the NFL.
both Loadholt and Duke Robinson from OU are gonna be monster first round picks next year...

I've seen some comment from the posters on this board about how he can compete for Center, but from what I heard the Steelers brought him in as a Guard. Who knows for sure what their plans are until camp starts, but it wouldn't surprise me to see them try him purely at Guard (especially if they like Stapleton.)

Steeler sign 12 FA's
Patrick Bailey, LB , 6-4, 235, Duke
Patrick Bailey fits the mold of Bruce Davis. He was an end in college, that’s listed as an OLB. There’s some potential there, although I’m pretty sure this guy is only getting a look at special teams. He could be a surprise.
Dorien Bryant, WR, 5-9, 175, Purdue
Bryant was a spectacular receiver for Purdue, catching 80+ passes the past three seasons, but his size kept him from being drafted. Bryant was brought to Pittsburgh because of his ability to return punts and kicks. This kid could be the next Dante Hall. What a fantastic pickup.
Doug Legursky, C, 6-1, 323, Marshall
Most thought Legursky would get drafted in the 5th or 6th round. He’s big, but short. I’m not comparing him to Mike Webster, but in that same mold. This kid has a motor that won’t quit, and was considered the leader of the Marshall offense. As Mike said earlier, he’s got short arms, and most think he’s playing as good as he can. Still, this kid might make the team as a back-up center, and guard. He’s got a shot.
Roy Lewis, CB, 5-10, 190, Washington
Lewis has decent size, who has a good head for playing corner. He has good burst, but probably not the speed to play corner in the NFL. He can return punts and kicks. Are you sensing a theme?
Mike Potts, QB, 6-4, 220, William & Mary
Mike Potts started at William & Mary, but not last season. Not sure what this is all about. He has good size, and rumor has it, he has a nice arm. Don’t see this amounting to much though.
Martavius Prince, DT, 6-2, 282, Southern Miss
This kid has a quick burst, and can hit gaps quick. He’s another motor guy, who is a ball hawk, and good at stopping the run. The Steelers probably like his mean streak. He needs to gain size, and once gets blocked, can’t shed very well. There’s potential there, but he has to get stronger to be a factor.
Julian Rauch, K, 5-11, 207, Appalachian State
He’s a kicker with good size. He comes from a winning program, so who knows. Maybe there’s something there.
Jordan Reffett, DT, 6-4, 292, Washington
He’s got the size going for him, but wasn’t really rated high on anyone’s list. I don’t think he’ll be with the team long.
Micah Rucker, WR, 6-6, 221, Eastern Illinois
Raise your hand if you know why Pittsburgh signed this kid! Size, Size and more Size! This is a kid that runs short routes, and may have a chance to make the team as a tight end. As a receiver, he’s hard to bump, and uses his size well. He’s got good vertical movement, and will be a red zone threat. I think he has a shot to make the team, or the practice squad.
Dezmond Sherrod, TE, 6-2, 250, Mississippi State
He’s got good size, good hands, and can block some. He’s a project though, but Arians like Tight Ends, and Pittsburgh needs them. So there’s a shot, although it’s remote.
Travis Williams, CB, 5-9, 180, East Carolina
He’s a dime back, and return specialist. Pittsburgh is obviously going to try a bunch in special teams.
Donovan Woods, LB, 6-2, 230, Oklahoma State
Woods is an interesting player. He played a bunch of safety in college, and is listed as an outside linebacker. Still, this kid smells a bit like Carnell Lake, with a little less speed. We shall see…we shall see.

I think from now on I'm just gonna consider all UDFA QB's as either camp bodies and/or Slash projects. I get a headache trying to figure out why the Steelers would even consider bringing in another arm at this point.

Kyle Clement - the sleeper you should know
Since we all agree we need a DT or two, here is a guy that I would have no problem reaching for in round 5.
Kyle Clement: 6'3" 316lbs
Arm Length: 32.2"; hand size: 10"; short shuttle: 4.54; 3-cone: 7.54; broad jump: 8'11"' Bench 37
12/23/07 - 2007 CACTUS BOWL ALL-STAR: Clement was a three-time all-GLIAC choice, including the first team twice, and was fourth in the league with 13.5 tackles for loss. - The Saginaw News
Could be a great small school find. You can not teach athleticism and strength and he has that along with production (against low competition but the triangle numbers are there).

He ran a 4.8, produced a 38" vertical jump and was one of the top bench-pressers (35 repetitions at 225 pounds). Though he set a school record with 16 1/2 sacks in 1996, there are questions about his ability to turn his physical credentials into production in the NFL. Projection: third-round pick.
He actually dropped that to a 4.7 at his Pro Day. I think he actually got drafted pretty high but he did nothing at camp, got hurt, and never played again. I think just like Marrow, this kid is going to be too far behind to ever catch up. He may have the power but thats only about 1/3 of the game.

This kid might not make it, but I would love to see anyone on the DL just push Kirschke and Eason to earn their paycheck in 2008. Still holding out hope that someone can push either of those 2 knuckleheads off the team.

You never know who is going to be a diamond in the rough.
Ray Seals did not play college ball, but was a solid NFL player.
Antonio Gates had not played football since High School, when SD gave him
a shot at the pros. Now he has an accomplished career in the NFL.
Kyle Clement has produced well in a small market.
He has the size and speed. Let's see if he can be coached up
to play at the NFL level.
If he makes it, it's a great success story. If he does not,
it costs the Steelers very little to give him a shot.

By the way, Micah Rucker caught 2 TD passes this year against Rodgers- Cromartie, the 1st round CB. This guy may prove to be the steal of the FA class.

That video makes me think this guy is a camp body and nothing else. It looks like he is playing Mahans high school team. Those guys don't look like they can block the fast lane at walmart with 200 items in their cart. It seems that everyone is in the backfield.
With that said maybe he will be a suprise and turn out like fast Willie. With the way the draft unfolded I think we did as well as we could with what was there. Our offensive line may turn out better than we think. Also our defensive line may do better with the addition of speed at linebacker we picked up.

He's a big dude, and strong.
J.J. Pesavento, of Next Level Scouting, reports Northwood DL Kyle Clement measured a height of 6-foot-4 and a weight of 316 pounds at his Pro Day. His hands measured 10 inches and his arm length was 32 1/4 inches. He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.21 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.54 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.54 seconds. He measured a 29 1/2-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot-10 1/2 broad jump and completed 37 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

You have to give it up to the scouts and the FO for bringing
in some interesting FA prospects. These guys are more than just
camp filler. Looking at their bio's they have a shot at making this team.
Kyle Clement and Doug Legursky are both big strong guys
and could help the team at a position of need.
Micah Rucker (6'6" and 221 lbs) has excellent size and speed for a WR.
He comes to us with a solid attitude and is known as a hard worker.
A possible hidden gem. Found his name on a FA wish list for the Vikes.
Dorian Bryant is a speedy slot receiver, he looks like a good candidate for
the ST's return game.

Rucker was hyped up before the draft as a super sleeper so I'm surprised nobody took him second day.
Dulac had a blurb about him and listed him at 6'4"-286. From what I am reading, he is a beast.
If he is a beast at 266, then he can play OLB. I'll take beasts on defense at any size.

smaller school opposition...but i like the way he plays...
Steelers sign rookie free agent defensive lineman Kyle Clement
Today, the Steelers signed another sleeper in rookie free agent Kyle Clement. This kid played at Division II Northwood University. Before you start chuckling under your breath about his level of play, he comes in at a paltry 6′3″, and 317 pounds. Clement was a three-time all-GLIAC choice, including the first team twice, and had a 20 1/2 career sacks. There’s a bunch of youtube vido of the kid, and he seems to be an athlete with good strength, and lateral movement. No, he doesn’t appear to be the end-all answer to the line needs, but perhaps there someone here with the raw ability to become a good solid player in this league.

He was listed at 266 at the Cactus Bowl. Not sure if they were officially weighed there or if they just submit their measurables. He went to Grand Valley States pro-day where he weighed in at 286. Not sure where the 316 is coming from.

Wouldn't count on June 1st for anything. There's only 3 teams close to the cap who might need to make a move or two, and the Steelers are one of them. Nobody really needs to clear cap space, except maybe Oakland and Detroit.
Charles Spencer is coming off another serious injury, and doesn't really fit in Houston now that they've hired Alex Gibbs. There's a chance he gets cut in camp. If he's not physically shot, he'd be a great pick up.

Ex-Cowboy signs with Steelers as linebacker
By Mike Baldwin

When Donovan Woods was a redshirt freshman quarterback, he debuted with a win over UCLA in the Rose Bowl and led Oklahoma State to the Alamo Bowl.
Even then, many felt his best shot at an NFL career would be on defense. A little over three years later, Woods has signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers … as a linebacker.
"I feel this is a good fit for me,” Woods said last week before leaving for a rookie mini-camp in Pittsburgh. "Linebacker is probably where I'll play the rest of my career however long I'm blessed to play.”
Woods' story has been well documented. After leading the Cowboys to a 7-5 season in 2004, he moved to defense early his sophomore season to allow Bobby Reid to take over at quarterback.
It was the first time Woods had played defense since junior high. Three games into the season, with no off-season to ease the transition, Woods still became a starter at safety.
His constantly changing career took another twist following his junior season when defensive coordinator Tim Beckman moved Woods to linebacker.
"Whatever happened in the past nothing can be done about that,” Woods said. "I'm in a good spot. I'm just looking forward to the future and playing linebacker for Pittsburgh.”
Woods said he and his agent weighed offers from four NFL teams before signing a free-agent deal with the Steelers on April 27, hours after the draft.
Pittsburgh has eight veteran linebackers. The Steelers also selected two linebackers in last weekend's draft — Bruce Davis (UCLA) in the third round and Mike Humpal (Iowa) in the sixth round. But in the Steelers' 3-4 scheme, more linebackers are needed.
Unlike Davis and Humpal, Woods has played linebacker only one year. While some might view that as a disadvantage, Woods feels he still has a lot of room to improve.
"I'll work at everything and just try to get better every day as far as techniques and schemes,” Woods said. "I'm still learning how to play linebacker. It's a different position. You learn something new every day. Some things will take a little longer.”
Woods adapted quickly last season to a position Beckman labels "star linebacker,” a hybrid position not that different from being a drop-down safety.
"Nothing was that difficult,” Woods said. "The biggest difference was being that close to the (line of scrimmage) and dealing with offensive linemen. That was the one thing that took a little getting used to. Football is football regardless of where you play.”
Despite the lack of defensive experience, Woods led OSU in tackles (82) his senior year.
"I was happy about that,” Woods said. "At the end of the season, me and the other linebackers had a little competition going. I was glad to come out on top.”
Woods is the youngest of three brothers who played at OSU. Rashaun, the leading receiver in school history, was a first-round pick by San Francisco but was hampered by injuries. He's attempting a comeback with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the CFL.
D'Juan Woods, the third leading receiver in OSU history, signed as a free agent with Jacksonville last year. He was one of the Jaguars' final cuts in August but was re-signed late in the season. D'Juan has signed a new deal and will be in camp this summer.
"My brothers have been able to give me some tidbits,” Donovan said. "They're really encouraging me. But like a lot of things, just like high school and college, you have to learn them for yourself.”
