NFL game slowing down for Capizzi

PITTSBURGH - Last summer was a joyride for Jason Capizzi. He was the super sleeper out of IUP, the hometown longshot who captured imaginations as a post-draft steal, a 6-9 offensive tackle with great feet.
Word had it that Kevin Colbert was talking him up big behind closed doors.

And then Capizzi got cut.

Dream over.

Until now.

While he's not the fresh name reporters love to discuss, he is drawing raves from behind closed doors. "He'll amaze you," said one source with the team.

But this time, this year, Capizzi isn't getting worked up by the buzz.

"Just trying to get better, man," was his response yesterday after the sixth Steelers OTA workout.

Capizzi has only been through four of the workouts. He was in a walking boot for a month because of a stress fracture in his foot. But he was in uniform to start last week and has been working at left tackle with the second team. He's still feeling some pain, and won't heed the training staff's caution that he stop for a break, because: "I've got to make this team," he said.

Capizzi was asked about what happened last year.

"I thought I had the team made," he said. "But nothing's ever guaranteed in this sport. So, I went out and did my thing. I went out and went against different competition: different schemes, different fronts, different kinds of players. And I think I got better from it.

"I'm glad to be back now, very glad. It's nice coming in here, like last year at this time I was definitely afraid of going against James Harrison and this year the game has just slowed down a lot."

Capizzi spent time last year on the practice squads of the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs wanted to keep him through the offseason and into this year's training camp, but the Steelers plucked him off the Chiefs' practice squad and put Capizzi on their roster for the playoff game after Max Starks got hurt. The Chiefs weren't pleased.

"They were mad," Capizzi said. "I actually had my final meeting with Kansas City before I came home for the offseason. But before I left Kansas City to come home I got a call from my agent saying Pittsburgh was picking me up for the playoffs, before I was even on the plane. So it was a nice plane ride home."

Why were the Chiefs mad?

"My agent told me they were pretty upset, but I was kind of upset with Kansas City. You lost the last nine games of the year and they're getting their proverbial butts kicked and I thought I was better than some of them and felt they should've brought me up off the practice squad. And I knew they had 45 draft picks this year and I knew they were going to bring in every guy known to man, so I didn't know what my future was like and I kind of knew things better here."

He's a new man, a hardened-but-wiser man, a man with a plan.

"Yeah," he said. "I'm trying to gain not just my coaches' respect by playing the game, I'm also trying to gain my teammates' respect, that they can trust me being out there and they know I'm going to be able to get the job done and help them win games and win a Super Bowl."

The key?

"Everything's just slowed down," he said.

Capizzi weighs 330 pounds, about five pounds heavier than the Steelers want him to be in training camp. Will he approach this training camp any differently than his first camp?

"No," he said. "I'm going to do everything I did last year - work hard. I'm going to be obviously a little better at what I'm doing out there. I won't be as nervous out there. I'm going to do whatever I can."

Does he feel more status, more respect from his teammates as he enters his second camp?

"Yeah, a little bit," he said. "I'm trying to gain it every day."

why is he listed as a RT by the Steelers website if they have been working at LT?

Capizzi has the frame of either side OT at this point more of a LT, 6"9 315 that's light you normally see guys that tall that play OT to at least be 330, haven't seen Cappizzi play yet so hard to talk about what his best weight would be for his frame.

1st thing is they have to decide on Essex either make him a G or release him, a log jam at OT and not a great one

LT Smith Essex Starks Hills Capizzi
RT Starks Colon

Capizzi is the best potential guy from the above to move to the right from those.

I seriously don't understand why they won't move Colon inside a 6"3 315 guy in the AFC North cannot play RT, it's just like putting Simmons their they both have about the same frame.

Capizzi if he is strong at the point of attack could amount to a RT, but Pitt followers please tell me whether he was a finesse, mauler balanced OT for Pitt.

Thanks

Good read on Capizzi. Like he said the Chiefs had every opportunity to bring him up on the PS and can only blame themselves. Great to hear that the game has slowed down for Capizzi. That can only help him. Hopefully he improved enough to make the team and contribute in down the road. Still can't believe the size on this kid.

Offseason Fluff.

Make the team before you get Solo spreads in the paper. As far as I'm concerned if you weren't a draft pick, you don't exist until you make the roster. NOT getting my hopes up.

Exactly. He was on FOUR teams last year. Am I to assume every one of these coaching staffs missed on his potential last year?

Left Tackles are worth their weight in gold, yet all these teams just let Capizzi slip through their fingers?

In all honesty and in any frank conversation, Capizzi is a career backup at best. That's not a bad thing, just reality. His frame and size seems to indicate he could play both LT and RT in a pinch and those guys are nice to have on the roster.

With Essex, Starks, Smith and Kemoeatu all not under contract in 2009 (although I expect that to change for some/all) having guys like Capizzi on the roster isn't a bad thing at all.

Capizzi is anything but a career backup. He's got a good shot of making the roster at LT or RT.

With guys like Essex, Starks, & Smith they are all sub-par performers IMO....slow, fat & lazy. Capizzi is quick off the snap of the ball....plays low, gets into his stance quick and has good punch against defensive linemen. He can be a rock on an O-line with some experience.

I hope your wrong and I'm right because we need quality players to protect Ben.

He did not play at Pitt. He played at IUP.

I think he actually transferred from Pitt to IUP after an off-field incident. He absolutely dominated at IUP though.

I have one question for Capizzi:
If the coach calls a QB Sweep to your side and you see two defenders coming your way, Do you A. Block one of them, B. Try to impede at least one of them or C. Just run past both defenders as if you did not see them?

Capizzi = The Great White Hope?

The guy hasn't played a down in the NFL and everybody wants him to start? Amazing.

I'm not hoping he starts. I hope he pushes Tripple Cheesburger Essex off the roster and becomes a solid backup.

I was actually excited to see Trai play well in place of a hobbled Marvel at the end last year. I know - I'm easily amused.

You shall now be struck down from the heavens for insulting the deity in human form...also known as Capizzi, not to mention the greatest legend in the history of sports. I hope you are happy, for you have brought down the wrath of the Gods upon us all for this blasphemy.

Essex has not exactly embarassed himself in his 3 career starts. He actually more than held his own in pass protection in each one. His weakness seems to be in the running game, as he did not get any push at all in the game against Jacksonville.

At this point I hope they bring in any capable competition at O-Line. Hope the kid brings his A-Game.

Exactly. If there is one thing this OL needs is competition. With Faneca gone and having most of the rest on 1 year contracts we need to see if he can play. He has good size and can only make camp better.

Essex has to be cut for him to make the team, and he's working through an injury right now. Last time he talked to the media, he was in a boot. Needs to bulk up as well.

Exactly....let's wait until it gets toward the end of camp and then see what happens. You can talk all about how good you make pudding, but as the saying goes...

Don't mean to turn this thread gay, but for 330 pounds Capizzi sure is cut.
