Running back Travis Henry was released by the Broncos this morning because coach Mike Shanahan said he questioned Henry's commitment. The Broncos opened a team minicamp today at Dove Valley, and the roster was updated this morning without the seven-year pro.
Said Shanahan in a release: "We did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team."
Henry missed the first week of the Broncos' passing camp with a strained hamstring, which he injured during conditioning drills May 16. Shanahan had hoped Henry would be healthy enough to return to minicamp last Tuesday, but instead he missed the rest of the week. Last week, second-year running back Selvin Young vowed to gain 2,000 yards this

season, and then the team signed veteran running back Michael Pittman. Young now becomes the starter, with Pittman his backup.

After Henry's fast start in 2007, when he rushed for 433 yards through four games, his season spiraled downward amid numerous injuries and off-field issues. The Broncos signed Henry to a five-year, $22.5 million contract in March 2007.

Heading to Cinci? New Orleans?

I hate to say it but the Browns should probably give him a look. Only problem is I am not sure they could pay him enough. You have to remember the guy has to get a big enough contract to pay child support for 9 kids.

From a contract perspective Travis Henry is an interesting case study. And further reason why "announced" contracts often don't nearly end up happening the way they sound at the beginning.

When Travis Henry signed his contract last year it was announce as a 5-year, $22.5 million deal with $12 million in "guaranteed money".

In year one, Henry was paid a $6 million signing bonus, a $595k base salary and got a $100k roster bonus. His salary cap number was $1.895 million.

In year two, Henry was scheduled to make a $6 million option bonus and earn $1 million base salary. Somehow, despite the fact this $6 million roster bonus was called "guaranteed money" when the contract was signed a year ago disappeared. In a February 21st report, Henry agreed to restructure the contract and gave up his entire $6 million option bonus. As it stood before he was released, Henry was only scheduled to make $1.1 million this season and count $2.3 million against the salary cap.

Why would a player renegotiate away $6 million in "guaranteed money"? Because it never was guaranteed in the first place. Somehow when Henry's original deal was announced that number conveniently got inflated, either by the agent, the team or both. Obviously, Denver came to Henry in February and said they were thinking about cutting him then and needed him to agree to a pay-cut in order to have a chance to stay with the team. The fact they cut him anyway is definately a low-ball business practices and it's obvious Henry should have forced Denver's hand back before free agency.

Not that I feel sorry for Henry. He's a scumbag. But it's just an interesting two year historic analysis of how a 5-year, $22.5 million contract with $12 million in guaranteed money becomes a 1-year, $6.695 million contract counting on Denver's books as $1.895 million in 2007, $1.2 million in 2008 and $3.6 million in 2009.

"Selvin Young vowed to gain 2,000 yards this season."

Yeah okay, who does this schmuk think he is, the next coming of Terrell Davis? His 2 best games were against the lowly Chiefs porous run defense.

Young was invited to the 2007 NFL Draft combine,[5] but was not selected in the draft. As an undrafted free agent, he signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos on May 1, 2007.[4] After impressive performances in the team's exhibition games, head coach Mike Shanahan named Young the #2 running back, behind starter Travis Henry.[6] In Young's first ever start, he notched 120 total yards from scrimmage against the Green Bay Packers, filling in for an injured Henry.

Young recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game and first career rushing touchdown on November 11, 2007, in an away game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He rushed for 109 yards on 20 attempts. His touchdown run was a 20-yarder in the third quarter of the game. The Broncos won, 27-11, which was their first victory at Arrowhead Stadium since 2002. His two best games of the 2007 season were against the Kansas City Chiefs, were he rushed for over 100 yards & over 5 yards a carry in both contests. Both games which were coincedently the only 100 yard games he had in the 2007 season.

Turns out Odell failed a drug test after all...not that I said that was the reason the Bumgals gave him the boot, but makes you wonder if there is more to this one as well...big cap casualty, Broncos just made themselves players for one big FA deal. Jason Taylor? Shaun Alexander? Interesting...

I think his agent is the same guy the NFLPA accused of doing this:

NFLPA ISSUES AGENT COMPLAINT: The NFL Players Association disciplinary committee issued a complaint against Hadley Engelhard, saying that he gave his NFLPA Web site password to a reporter and changed his agent fee for a player without full disclosure to the player.

The NFLPA disciplinary committee voted to issue a letter of reprimand and levy a fine of $10,000 for each offense, for a total of $20,000, said Richard Berthelsen, NFLPA general counsel. Engelhard has appealed the action, Berthelsen said.

Engelhard did not return phone calls.

ESPN reporter Len Pasquarelli, who the union says used Engelhard’s NFLPA Web site password, wouldn’t comment.

Funny how Shanahan said in the press conference how it takes character guys to win a championship and yet over the past few years they still drafted college players who had questionable character. Learn about consistency Mike.
