The Steelers are saddened by the death of Dwight White today, a member of the Steel Curtain and the Steelers 75th Season All-Time Team.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, June 11 at noon at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206

Please note that in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Dwight’s memory be sent to The August Wilson Center of African American Culture at 425 Sixth Avenue, Suite 1750, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney on the Death of Dwight White

Dwight White was one of the greatest players to ever wear a Steelers uniform. He was a key member of the Steel Curtain defense and a member of the greatest defensive line in NFL history. He played with a relentlessness that led us to four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s. Dwight refused to be denied, as was evidenced when he walked out of the hospital with pneumonia to play in Super Bowl IX and had an outstanding game, scoring our first points by sacking Fran Tarkenton for a safety.

Dwight will be remembered by those who knew him even more for being a wonderful and caring person. He was committed to the city of Pittsburgh and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate than himself. Our prayers go out to his family. We will miss Dwight, but we will never forget everything he meant to the Steelers organization.

Steelers President Art Rooney II on the Death of Dwight White

We have lost an important member of the Steelers family in Dwight White. His sudden death is a shock to us all. He was a dear friend.

Dwight should be remembered by fans as a great football player, one who perhaps did not receive the accolades he deserved for helping make the Steelers truly a national team. He always seemed to rise to the occasion when it counted most, and added an element of toughness that was synonymous with our teams of the 1970s.

We all knew him as “Mad Dog”, but Dwight was a caring person who was very active in local charities. He also had a special gift that enabled him to liven up any room that he entered. Our prayers go out to Dwight’s family at this extremely difficult time. They will remain a member of the Steelers family, just as Dwight will always be in our thoughts.

Former Steeler Dwight White Passes Away
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Steelers have confirmed that former player and one of the original members of the Steel Curtain, Dwight White, has died. He was 58.

White, a former defensive end, was hospitalized in intensive care last month due to complications from back surgery.

Officials say White originally went home after the surgery, but he had to be taken back to the hospital.

"Dwight White was one of the greatest players to ever wear a Steelers uniform," says Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, in a statement. "He was a key member of the Steel Curtain defense and a member of the greatest defensive line in NFL history. He played with a relentlessness that led us to four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s.

White was a member of the "Front Four" of the Steel Curtain along with Ernie Holmes, Joe Green & LC Greenwood. Holmes passed away in January at age 59.

What a shame. This man had it all speed, size and smarts. I believe he was a lawyer. If my memory is correct he was in the hospital superbowl week prior to SBIX and still played. A childhood hero of mine.
He will truly be missed.

After retiring from the NFL in 1980, Dwight began his next career in the financial world, starting as a stockbroker and most recently a Senior Managing Director in Public Finance for Mesirow Financial. He also has been and involved with many local charities over the years including the Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, the Boy Scouts of America, PACE School and Rebuilding Pittsburgh. Dwight served as Chairman of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and was a member of the board of trustees for Seton Hill University. In addition to his work and charity involvement, he was often in demand as a motivational speaker for many organizations and corporations.

He has made Pittsburgh his home and where he resided with his wife Karen and daughter, Stacey.

RIP!

Condolences to the Dwight White family.

White once challenged the entire Browns bench to a fight - in Cleveland. No takers. White played Super Bowl IX with a case of pneumonia.

This is sad. 58 is too young to go.

Oh boy ... I didn't hear about this. Not even on the drive home with the local stations on!

I'm stunned. He was still so young ... I always like Dwight. I was fortunate to get his autograph a couple of years ago at a Steelers 5k run. He was talking with everyone, happy to be with Steeler fans.

Rest in peace Dwight, and thanks for the memories!

I had the pleasure of meeting Dwight White when I was a teenager & he was a SB champ. Crazy part about it was that I was the only person in the store who knew who he was. He shook my hand & when asked about the upcoming game, he told me they were gonna beat up on the Browns.

He was a very nice man & will be sorely missed.

RIP Dwight

I didn't really comprehend the greatness of the Steel Curtain until I was older. I've seen many highlights and have been able to watch replays of our 70's Superbowl victories.

Alot of people talk about Mean Joe and LC, as they should, but though Dwight was a gentleman off the field, he was one mean SOB on it. God help the guy who got in his way.

RIP Mr. White, you'll be sadly missed.

Well fuck.

I haven't visited the Football forum for a few days and just got the news.

I met Dwight White in 1974 when I was 10 a few months after SB IX. He signed my t-shirt and shook my hand. Nicest guy ever. 58 is too young to go.

RIP Mad Dog!
