Not everything fell into place for an organization that places a premium on building through the NFL Draft.

It just seemed that way after the Steelers addressed multiple needs without straying from taking the best players available to them.

The Steelers dramatically altered the complexion of their offensive line, may have found a long-term successor to nose tackle Casey Hampton and added speed — not to mention a local kid — at running back and wide receiver.

It will be at least three years before the Steelers’ haul in the three-day draft can be fairly evaluated. But no one would have blamed general manager Kevin Colbert had he stopped to buy a lottery ticket on his way home from Steelers headquarters Saturday night.

“Really the last three days unfolded very well for us,” Colbert said. “We got a lot of players that we had targeted. Every player we picked, we liked. We didn’t think we reached for anybody.”

The Steelers were in the market to replace inside linebacker James Farrior, and they addressed that need in the third round of the NFL Draft on Friday night by selecting Miami (Fla.) senior linebacker Sean Spence.

“We see him as an inside linebacker,” Steelers linebacker coach Keith Butler said. “Sean is a very distinctive, fast kid who is very smart.”

Butler said Spence (5-foot-11, 231 pounds) won’t be expected to contribute much his rookie year other than special teams. Butler said Lawrence Timmons and Larry Foote will be the starting inside linebackers.

“You are never going to replace a guy like James Farrior with all the intangibles he brings to the table,” Butler said. “We feel comfortable with what we have.”

The Steelers plan to groom Spence to eventually take over one of the inside spots.

The Steelers never would have called Mike Adams on Friday had the former Ohio State offensive tackle not called them
    first.

Adams contacted the Steelers in March and requested a meeting after learning he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Steelers brought in Adams for an official visit and told him they were taking him off their draft board.

That they took him with the 56th pick of the NFL Draft last night is telling of just how far Adams has come in the Steelers’ eyes since that meeting with president Art Rooney II, general manager Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers gave a first-round grade to Adams, who has the build and feet of a prototypical tackle. They felt comfortable enough after doing homework on the 6-foot-7, 323-pounder to take him after he fell to the latter part of the second round.

PITTSBURGH — Never in their wildest dreams did the Steelers think David DeCastro would still be on the board when it was their turn to pick. But after 23 selections, there he was.

So the Steelers' time on the NFL Draft clock Thursday night didn't last long. With the 24th pick of the first round, the Steelers quickly and excitedly plucked the All-American guard from Stanford.

“We said the other day that there were a few special players who would be easy to evaluate. David was one of them,” said general manager Kevin Colbert. “We valued him very high.

“But we really didn’t think David would be there at 24. So we’re truly, truly excited that he was.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers failed to reach the Super Bowl last season, and I know what you're thinking. So what? So, the past three times they reached the Super Bowl they didn't win a playoff game the following year. In fact, twice they didn't even make the playoffs.

They should this season, even though they go into the season without running back Rashard Mendenhall and with a passel of unanswered questions. But it's not Mendenhall who's the key here; it's quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the team's linebackers and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau.

They have kept the Steelers at or near the top of the AFC for most of the past seven seasons, and nothing has changed there. Only once since realignment has Pittsburgh gone consecutive seasons without winning a division championship, and then it tied for first -- losing only in a tiebreaker (2005).

    Look out above.

March Madness is upon us. So is the NCAA Tournament, but I'm talking about the first week of NFL free agency.

Did Pierre Garcon really just sign a $42.5 million deal?

Year in, year out, there is only one sure thing in the frenzied first week: The Steelers won't participate.

    Why should they?

    How can they?

The Steelers find star players in April, not March. Despite low draft positions -- they haven't chosen in the top 10 since 2000 -- they accrue winning talent, develop it and pay it.

That is why Ben Roethlisberger, LaMarr Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, Troy Polamalu and Heath Miller have contracts totaling nearly $300 million.
