Mark it down. The Steelers pick at 1.18 will be Center Maurkice Pouncey.
I thought about this for awhile now and here is my reasoning.
Last year Colbert tried like he'll to get one of the top 3 Centers. He took at shot at Shipley in the later rounds, but that didn't work out. This year he will not wait. And Pouncey will be there.
Pouncey can also play guard.
Need a Corner but No corner is worth 1.18, Haden ran a 4.6 40 at the combine.
Inside Backer? McClain will be gone at this point. Weatherspoon is a very good possiblity Here too but we do have Keyaron Fox. Quick, who is our backup Center?
DE? Oddrick in my opinion is the best, but may be gone at this point. Also unlikley after picking a DE #1 last year.
Safety? Clark, Allen signed
Nose? Hampton 3 year deal
Tackle? Anthony Davis has character issues Colon tendered
guard? Iupati is stupid and struggled at senior bowl.
Let's here it.
You'll hear no complaints from me.
I would be shocked if the Steelers took a center with the 18th pick. I just don't see it.
Why be shocked? They tried last year and we still have not added a center.
Too high for a Center. If we want him, trade down 8 spots.
Could be. I doubt Pouncy will be there for us in 2nd by time we're up.
They did not try to draft a center with the 18th pick last season. The only center to go inside the Top 20 picks in the last 15 years is Damian Woody. Pouncey is NOT Woody.
If they could trade down, it is possible, but I think if they stand pat, they go elsewhere. The value is not at center with the 18th pick.
Legursky is our backup. I'd rather us get the big guard from Idaho if we go OL
"I demand entertainment." Spike
I'll believe it...
Art Rooney has put Tomlin on notice about running the football......and we'll never have a dominating running game with Hartwig at center. He's a decent center but we need a dominating force up front that can take charge of the OL.
not to mention adding a great center will fix a lot of the OL's woes. A better center will make the Guards jobs much easier thus freeing the tackles to only worry about thier assignment. Last year all the OL had to help eachother because if there is one weak link the whole thing comes down.
we need a center bad....that would be huge for the OL.
I'd rather just take Tennant in the 3rd...I could see McClain falling his 40 time is gonna scare some 4-3 teams away..
Not if Dan Williams is available... Regardless if Casey was signed or not, the NT position must be upgraded as both our starter and back up are in their 30's. Add to it, that Casey is not an every down NT and the new paradigm in the NFL is pressure up the middle to slow down the 3 step quick release spread offenses. Williams is unique because he play the run and also add pressure.
Disclaimer: I have a terrible track record on draft day.
The signing of Hampton, Clark et al has no effect on the draft from the Steelers point of view. The rookies won't start anyway. The Steelers always have a team of starters and draft players to take vets spots in a year or two. That way they can focus on the BAP within the areas of need and not draft a guy because they have to fill an immediate need this year.
People talk about not drafting a NT because they just re-signed him but Hartwig just re-signed last year and has 3 years left on his contract. So I guess they won't draft a center because Hartwig is signed for 3 more years right??? Sorry but the Steelers don't work that way.
Dan Williams is a top 10 pick.
They weren't trying to draft/replace a center last year. It's pretty obvious that those centers Colbert tried to draft were going to be converted to G so they could keep Essex in his backup role as a swing O-Lineman that could backup at both G and C. They re-signed Hartwig for god's sake and drafted whatever guard fell to them with their 2nd pick (Urbik).
i don't think i'd be completely upset with any of the names being mentioned, though i think, most of them are unlikely. but i think it comes down to pouncey or iupati. both of them, especially pouncey, would be more likely to contribute in their first year than any LB or DB we could take. tomlin and rooney want to put an emphasis on the running game, and that all starts with a powerful line. with iupati, his draft prospects depends on how they feel about urbik. matt tennant is 291 pounds and while he's a big guy, guys like shaun rogers, ngata, wilfork, outweigh him by almost 50lbs. also, C/G are positions that can be plugged in for the next ten years which gives more value with those picks in the longrun. would mcclain, haden, weatherspoon, or mays look good on the steelers roster? ABSOLUTELY! but like it or not, it all starts up front and in the trenches and i don't think we're as strong as we need to be there.
I don't think the Steelers pick a C this high in the draft, especially this draft. There are no top notch C's this year. No Mangold's, etc.
Sorry. I just don't believe it. I could see in the 2nd or 3rd round if the right guy they liked was available but not at 18 this year.
The ideal situation to me is to take the G then trade up into the late 1st / early 2nd on Pouncey.
