This is my first posting on the JUST WATCH THE GAME blog. The plan here is to blog at least once a day and probably several times a day. JUST WATCH THE GAME is the title of the book that I’ll be releasing in a few months and you’ll be able to read excerpts at justwatchthegame.com.
I guess I should get my two cents in on Ben Roethlisberger:
First of all, none of this surprises me. Ben is a bad citizen. He doesn’t know how to treat people and he definitely doesn’t know how to handle being the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In my more than 30 years of working in the Pittsburgh sports media, I have never had any player come close to generating as many unsolicited questions from fans as Roethlisberger has. They want to know why he’s such a jackass. And these aren’t just Steelers fans who got turned down for an autograph. It’s men and women from all walks of life.
Most of the accounts of the incident in Georgial mention that Ben wasn’t drinking much. The implication being that he wasn’t high. Let me be the first to point out that he could very easily have been high on something other than alcohol. If that turns out to be the case, will you be surprised?
If this jackass is charged with sexual assault, the NFL should immediately suspend him for several games next season. If the league doesn’t, the Steelers should. We hear all the time about how the Rooney family does things differently. This is a chance to prove it. It’s one thing to suspend or cut a third receiver or a backup lineman. Suspending a $100 million quarterback would really set the Rooneys apart.
Roethlisberger is a punk who needs to be knocked down a peg or two.
A couple of years ago I heard from a woman who said that Roethlisberger blew off a Make-A-Wish kid. When KDKA-TVs News Director, John Verrilli, was shown the email, he made it clear that it was a story that his news department would not be pursuing. I eventually got in contact with the parents of the little girl who the jackass snubbed. They said the story was true but they didn’t want to go public with it for their daughter’s sake. The little girl had cystic fibrosis.
As I said, Bad citizen who needs a comeuppance.

Perhaps we should look into Mr.Steigerwald's personal life, maybe HE'S a crackhead and is just talking from experience. The most interesting thing in the article was that he said Ben is the most divisive person in his 30 years of covering sports in Pittsburgh. Couple that with the rumors Ben is not well liked in the locker room and you can start questioning his personality.

Why do so many of you think it's unphathonable that Ben's a giant douche?
You guys act like this is the first time he's been accussed of behavior unbecomming of someone being the face of this franchise.
While I think the McNulty chick is still McNutty, I think if he would have treated her with some respect there's a good chance the incident never becomes public. Same with this latest incident. I've read enough negative stories about Ben over the past 5+ years to realize that there's more truth there than many of us would like.
I ask myself this simple question: would I want my daughter hanging around Ben? The answer to me is pretty clear. I just hope my daughter grows up to be smart enough on how to deal with people like this.
The plain fact is that Ben's stupidity makes this an issue. If he doesn't get himself in these situations, nobody really questions the other stuff. They figure he's just s typical modern athlete. Of course, you cannot really seperate the two. Ben's stupidity got him into all of this. I would just love to walk up to this idiotic SOB and punch him dead in his surgically repaired face. Perhaps had someone at one of these clubs done that, he would've been given some pause. I guess when you have to travel with "bodyguards," basically what this allows you to do is act like and ass without anyone calling you on it. It really isn't to keep you from being targeted by the masses.
I hope they get him. I really do. I'm tired of these athletes thinking they have a free pass to do whatever they want. I would rather that point have been proven on someone else's QB, but oh, well.

For every story about Ben buying police dogs for stations that don't have them, there's a story about him walking out on a restaurant check. One day his spending thousands of dollars of his own money on a Toys For Tots drive, the next he's in trouble for sexual assault.
Look at the McNulty case. He doesn't deny having sex with her. He just denies that it was rape. He doesn't deny going into the bathroom with this new girl for some play time, just that he didn't force her. I mean honestly, he's a 28 year old multi millionaire and the face of one of the most storied and respected franchises in sports history. Is this really the best he can do? Random hotel clerks and 20 year old college girls? Carrying on like a drunken frat boy?

If you lived near Pittsburgh, and knew of anyone who had an occassional run-in with Ben out in public, you'd know that he is pretty much the douchebag that everyone says he is. Do I think he's a rapist? no, I don't. And I hope he is innocent and is able to put this incident behind him. But he is no model citizen, I don't care how many pictures he takes or police dogs he buys. He does have an overblown sense of entitlement that leads to a lot of negative press.

It wasn't directed at you. I'm just amazed at how many people seem to be believing there's no way he did what he's accussed of. To the best of my knowledge the acutual detailed complaint hasn't been released to the public. We know he's been accussed of "sexual assault" but that's very vague and doesn't tell us the details.
So I'm not saying he's guilty of a crime, but I've defintely read enough various and consistent stories about Ben being a douche, that I think when you see smoke there's some fire there.
I speculat that what happened is that they were fooling around and having a good time. Then Ben wanted her to do something she didn't want to do. When she refused, Ben got cold and blew her off. It's at that point she hit her head. Whether Ben push her, she slipped on her own or slipped maybe after pushing Ben, I can't say. What I can say is I wouldn't treat anyone like that and definitely wouldn't want my kids treating someone like that.
So, while I'm not convicting him of a crime or saying he did anything illegal, I think at best case scenario Ben has a lot of growing up to do and a lot of self-evaluation to do on whether he really is behaving like the kind of person he wants to be.
With his fame and fortune, I question this also. Why not a steady, good looking girlfriend? Remember Natilie Gilbus and him use to date. Is he to big a douche bag for anyone to be with steadily? Just questions of a normal wondering. Why the body guards, are they for protection or so he can be a douche when ever he wants? I too have heard the good stories, but also some negative ones. Will the real ben please step forward. Maybe he has.
