People talk like he was the hottest college prospect that year and the Steelers had the 1:1 pick. 26 teams passed on him and some of them desperately needed a QB. As I said, Tony Eason and Todd Blackledge were drafted ahead of him. Mario wasn't even drafted to start in Miami, he was drafted for depth as Shula thought David Woodley was their future.

No one saw Marino coming and it's dumb for people to harp on the idea that the Steelers were stupid for not taking him. They didn't take Tom Brady either - are they stupid for that too?
lol, ok. If you're directly asking me that question at the end-I never said that it was stupid or not stupid. You're right, hindsight is always 20/20. But the reason the Steelers are the first team to come to mind when talking about Dan Marino...is simply because he was from the area and he was a beast. If he were from Kansas City and they had passed him over, then it would be them who people would always bring up.

Yep in 1990 Pittsburgh traded with Dallas for a 3rd round pick. Dallas selected Emmitt Smith and the Steelers took Eric Green. Green wasn't bad but ended up being a bitch at the end.

#1 has to be Kordell Stewart. We flushed multiple SB's down the drain by sticking with him. He had 8 TO in the AFCCG's of 1997 and 2001. 8. Eight. 8.

    No, he wasn't!

Ok. So then why? Why is it that the Steelers are brought up when discussing Dan Marino? Enlighten me, please.

I fel that the Mahan signing was to eventually replace Faneca with as Mahan wasa G in a west coast system in Tampa and west coast oL are puny and quick, Mahan nowhere had the strength to play C in the AFC North.
Asa G may have not been as bad.

It's Yinzer talk. The same people that believe that Neil O'Donnell worked his entire life to win a Super Bowl and the one time he made it there, he threw the game.

Marino had a terrible senior year and there were rampant rumors of him having a coke problem. Even Dan Rooney has mentioned that "those rumors" (never saying what the rumors were) had a heavy bearing on the decision to pass on him. It just pisses people off that he was from Pittsburgh and could have done what he did in a Steelers uniform.

Marino certainly became a Hall of Famer, but he was NOT considered a big time talent coming out of Pitt. That's what kills me about it. People act like he was the second coming and everyone in Pittsburgh knew it, which is false.

Well, if it were me, I'd take a coked out, bad senior year Marino and let him compete against Mark freaking Malone.

What insight would you need? Three years of Malone in camp would already tell me that bringing in Marino would be a great idea. But I see, watching Malone battle with David Woodley was a much better idea, right? Come on, the QB situation was awful at that point and would only go down from there.

I think the reason Marino is brought up so much is a two fold thing and one he is a HOF player and everyone loves to bring up all the teams that past on HOF players (Example Jordan) two he was from Pittsburgh. But still their isn't any reason not to look back and say if we could do that one all over again we should have drafted Marino. I'm sure the Steeler front office would say the same thing. But also so could 26 teams before the Dolphins.

Dummaho is the reason Kearse never wore the black and gold, and instead we got Troy effing Edwards. Combine that with the Woodson story, and you have the exact reason I'm glad to see him screwing up the Bills instead of our team now.

Woodson did NOT have a decent year at corner in San Fransisco, he was torched for touchdown after touchdown and then 49ers wanted no part of him anymore.

I remember reading the article, it was one of those out of nowhere articles where Kearse said he was on the phone with Bill Cowher being told he would be a steeler when the pick was announced. I know I've seen it more than once, it's not something that came out at the time, but I saw the quote just like a year or two ago. Anyone else recall that, or have a link?

Dude - you were 8 years old. Stop trying to act like you were savvy enough to make that comparison back then. Plus, by 1983, Malone had appeared in 8 games and threw 45 passes. No one saw enough of him to make that judgment.

Malone was the greatest athlete Chuck Noll ever said he saw at the QB position, he started in college at age 16 but it all went south for him when he tore up his knee with the Steelers and he never regained the mobility he had. Noll planned to use his athleticism to rollout, etc. Just a little side note on what might have been.

Um, dude, we were having a hypothetical discussion if I were with the steeler brass at the at the time. Being 8, 9, or 62 has nothing to do with it. But it's a nice attempt anyway. There's nothing wrong with admitting mistakes, the Rooneys would be the first to tell you they screwed that one up.

Knee or not Malone couldn't throw a touch pass if you had a gun to his head. He also was the int king of all time, dude threw to the other team more than his own guys. :)

Rolling out is great. Passing the ball well, even better. See- Montana, Joe.

You are 100% correct , I was giving the reasoning Noll wanted and drafted Malone in the 1st round.
