Penguins Acquire Gruden and a 2020 2nd-Round Draft Pick for Matt Murray
by Pittsburgh Penguins @penguins / Media Release
18 minutes ago

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Jonathan Gruden and a 2020 second-round draft pick (52nd overall) from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Matt Murray, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

Gruden is signed through the 2022-23 season and his contract carries an average annual value of $788,333.

"We would like to thank Matt for everything he's done in his five seasons with the Penguins," said Rutherford. "He was instrumental to our back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships, and we wish him the best."

Gruden, 20, played the 2019-20 season with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, where he appeared in 59 games, recording 30 goals, 36 assists, 66 points and was plus-20. His 30 goals ranked second on the team while his 66 points were fourth most.

Prior to his time in London, the 6-foot, 172-pound Gruden played one season of collegiate hockey with Miami University (Ohio). He accumulated 15 points (3G-12A) in 38 games.

The Rochester Hills, Michigan native was drafted by Ottawa in the fourth round (95th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft. He was a member of the U.S. National Team Development Program for two seasons from 2016-18, serving as an alternate captain of Team USA at the World Junior Championship in 2018, helping them to a silver medal.

With the addition of the 52nd overall pick, Pittsburgh now owns five selections in the 2020 NHL Draft:

Penguins' 2020 NHL Draft Picks

Round 2 Pick #52
Round 3 Pick #77
Round 4 Pick #108
Round 5 Pick #139
Round 6 Pick #170

He needed a change of venue, and we have DeSmith and Jarry.

This is a great move!

Jon Gruden will now coach the Raiders and Penguins.

Seriously, this is a good move for both parties. MM needed a change and the Pens need to ride Jarry..

I keep hoping for Rutherford to come up with a beefy defense though. It's just like him to get a project forward in a trade.

that is about $5M in cap space they opened up and with not retaining JJ. FA starts soon, so I expect GMJR to be active.

So you’re saying he now has cap room to sigh a low skill, overpriced fourth liner?

I didn't think Murray was awful, but he was just average lately and with a defense corps like the Pens, average isn't gonna get it. I hope Jarry is up to the task. It's a big step for him.

Rumor has it that Fleury wants out of his contract so he can sign with the Pens for cheap.

The third pick was a center. Seems like he has some skills, but I wonder if rutherford knew that our defense was just gutted.

Pietrangelo or Krug would look great in a Pens Sweater. Probably too expensive for our cap space though. If Rutherford don't sign some Defensive bodies, the Pens are FUBAR

Pietrangelo turned down $8M a year from STL. Doubt he'd sign here.

You could probably get Krug for $5-$6M a year.

Do we have an abundance of great D men in the baby pens?

Warsofsky is their best D player. 33 points in 50 games with a +/- of -33. But he's 30 years old and been all over the minors. Not really a guy you pull up to the NHL level.

That's how I see it. I was hoping that I was wrong. What will our defense be this year? It seems VERY short sided to me.
