IMO, before you draft Trask or Mac Wilson, you have to look ahead to also next year - would we be able to get a better QB in 2021? if so, you hold on taking a QB.

No doubt. Look, I kinda like Wilson. He is a poor man's Brees. However, the 2022 QB pool looks pretty sad. Sam Howell is the top prospect, and he will be gone early. He is 6'1", 225 lbs. About the same size as Wilson, much smaller than Trask. After him? Spencer Rattler, whom I do not like at all. Watched him vs. a mediocre Kansas State defense and he looked like his hair was on fire. Running out of the pocket when he had almost no pressure, throwing into double coverage. "Just a bad game." Maybe. But Rattler is probably 6'0", 200 lbs. Small. Skittish. And he is arguably one of the top QB prospects in the 2022 draft.

Oregon QB Tyler Shough looks like he could get a lot of attention. Bigger guy, some experience last year. But not as good as prospect as Trask, I think, and likely going top-15 anyway.

Take advantage of a VERY deep QB pool in 2021 draft, or risk going after a much, much, much lower-level prospect and hope he pans out.

This draft is DEEP at QB. Waiting until next season is a huge risk. Might wind up with a lot of good pieces, and a QB who is ****.

No trading this time, because Steelers are not likely to be offered a 1st round and 2nd round pick for their #24.

Your score is: 41632 (GRADE: A)

Your Picks:

Round 1 Pick 24: Kyle Trask, QB, Florida (B)
Round 2 Pick 23: Jalen Mayfield, OT, Michigan (A+)
Round 3 Pick 23: Aaron Banks, OG, Notre Dame (A+)
Round 4 Pick 23: Jacoby Stevens, FS/SS, LSU (A+)
Round 4 Pick 36 (COMP): Larry Rountree, RB, Missouri (A-)
Round 6 Pick 32: Janarius Robinson, DE/OLB, Florida State (A+)
Round 6 Pick 40 (COMP): Shemar Jean-Charles, CB, Appalachian State (A+)
Round 7 Pick 18: Bennett Skowronek, WR, Notre Dame (A+)
Round 7 Pick 27: Buddy Johnson, ILB/OLB, Texas A&M (A+)

No OT left at #24 (Pennei, Darrisaw, Slater gone) gives as much potential value as a starting QB. Najee Harris gone by #24. Offensive line next two, including a guy who looks like an NFL caliber LT and a very good G from Notre Dame. Rountree a good-not-great RB prospect, a one-cut guy who probably fits the Steelers zone scheme. With the new LT and G, might have some room to run as well. I think Robinson is going to do well before late 6th. Guy is a huge edge player who can stuff the run and develop as a pass rusher.

Why your acting as if your not excited about the second coming of Bubby, or maybe Kent.

Like the first three picks but would have squeezed a C in there somewhere. I tell ya something about those ND O-linemen can't go wrong picking one up. Run blocking roughnecks.

Really like this one, assuming Ben is back. Traded back twice, would move Kary Vincent to safety. Believe the 3 lineman could start right away if needed, plus a couple of backs to help reset the run game.

I would do back-flips if that draft happened. The first three rounds really make a draft and if you hit on those picks, you get Pro-Bowl players. If you miss ... not good. Your draft gets three top-tier level players at three of the most important positions on offense - QB, RB, LT.

In the 4th, I think the Steelers have to look at edge/rush, and I really, really like Weaver. He fits the ROLB position really well. For their second 4th round pick, I have the Steelers taking a quality small-school CB, Shemar Jean-Charles, Appalachian State. Steelers interviewed him at the Senior Bowl, where he showcased well. He has decent size (5'11", 190 lbs.) Played outside for Appalachian State with 26 passes defensed in two years.

The scouting blurbs say he is likely a slot corner, but I think that is due to his size and relative lack of experience. Watching a bit of tape shows he is very good at mirroring, backpedal very good as he keeps his chest right over his feet with quick steps, turns and runs at the right time, breaks on the ball well. He is also a demon on special teams. So you get a guy who contributes right away and could develop at worst into a slot corner.

What say ye???

Your score is: 45453 (GRADE: A)

Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 24: Najee Harris, RB, Alabama (A+) - can't pass up the BPA at this point
Round 2 Pick 23: Landon Dickerson, C/OG, Alabama (A) - want another 10 year Pro Bowler? Here's your guy and he can do it all - run/pass block and pull in space
Round 3 Pick 23: Brady Christianson, OT, BYU (A+) - love ya Big Al; but it's time to find a younger better version of you
Round 4 Pick 23: Tyler Shelvin, DT, LSU (A+) - I can only imagine the pairing of Shelvin next to Buggs on defense. Ain't no one running up the middle
Round 4 Pick 36 (COMP): Jacoby Stevens, FS/SS, LSU (A+) - Jacoby can play anywhere in the secondary. He is better fit as an 'in-the-box' safety - excellent pairing w/ Minkah
Round 6 Pick 32: Matt Bushman, TE, BYU (A+) - no brainer - we need a blocking TE. If he's gone - the next option will be Foristall from Bama; but I think the Bama product will still be available in the 7th
Round 6 Pick 40 (COMP): Janarius Robinson, DE/OLB, Florida State (A+) - a poor man's Woodley but he brings a different dimension to the defense
Round 7 Pick 18: Trevon Grimes, WR, Florida (A+) - wanna give Ben one last final gift? Grimes is another BIG WR who can go get it on the edge. Adding him and Mapletron in the redzone will be a defensive nightmare
Round 7 Pick 27: Max Duffy, P, Kentucky (A+) - meh, Berry needs some competition. Here it is

so given the lack of top TE's available we should discard TE until day 3 right?
then my priorities would be OT, C, RB, NCB/S (this dependes a lot on keeping sutton or hilton), blocking TE, ILB depth (I think Vince gets cut, hopefully can be brought back with a friendly deal), OLB depth.

Nice. I think Dickerson is great ... when healthy. But four surgeries (two on ankles, two for ACL injuries) by age 22? Yikes. 3rd round - sure. Will somebody else take him before pick 87? Could be. But wow - four major injuries, all to his lower extremities, in four years makes me very wary. Talk about boom or bust - if he is healthy, he is a huge mauler, smart, dedicated, a force, anchoring the line for 10 years. If he is not healthy, he contributes as much to the team as I do.

So Trask is my gamble pick if he is there at the bottom of the first round... i might even risk trading down a few spots since few of the playoff teams will be gunning for him if he is there...

Here is the thing... Trask is a relatively Raw QB when it comes to experience ... his upside is huge... he also has a diverse range of perceived flaws that mimic a lot of nfl greats draft scouting reports... some rave about his arm and accuracy others see it as a room for improvement

Most knock him for two reasons... his mobility outside the pocket... and his relative inexperience as a starter...
however, the intelligence and quick process is there and he does move ok inside the pocket... one guy pinged him for “too much touch” which i guess is a thing for some reason

Mostly this kid is getting slammed cause he isnt a mahomes or jackson in the open field... as a qb he has the tools....

I assure you, if there was a combine, this kid would leapfrog someone to take a mid to high first round spot... had he come out in a year not loaded with talent at qb he might be a pretty high selection...

I still think someone like New England is going to snap him up, but if it looks like he is falling to us, trade back 5 or so spots, pick up another mid round pick then package a lower rounder to move up what you got for trading down to move up into the second so we have two picks there... we could easily get two olinemen there... ...or an oline and a rb...

Honestly barring one of the top 3 qbs falling he is tge guy i am most comfortable with low in the first or high in the second if they go QB...

Yes because the top one won't be available, the second rated has a injury question mark attached, and then it drops off quickly from there. Don't sleep on OLBer as that is a wild card in the equation as is QB. If the Steelers think like most of us do that this is Ben's last year some fans might be in for a shocker.

Plus two is where a RB will be taken.[emoji16]Projecting aside for how much I like Dickerson I wouldn't touch him either before 3.

I think they are happy with Highsmith for the starting spot next season, depth? there is zero

yeap I see why QB could be a big part of the equation but maybe they are hoping Rudolph is the answer or at least a bridge towards their future QB, if Rudolph plays adequately for one season then you have trade value, probably a 3rd rounder that might help improve the chances to move up in the following year to get the real QB of the future. If Rudolph stinks then you still would have an early pick due to the ****** record

If Ben doesn't return and with QB class looking iffy next year I pull the trigger on a QB this year. In this scenario I might even trade up. Rudolph doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

Yep ... and you will notice that in all my mocks, I take a huge defensive lineman in the 4th or 5th because Alualu is an unrestricted free agent. Rumor has it that the team might want a big defensive tackle in the middle against, say, Baltimore or Cleveland.

The problem is that the QB crop next years sucks a dog's dick. If Trask was in next year's draft, he would be a top-5 pick.

Missy Mathews is reporting the Steelers aren't in negotiations with Ben and they are throwing out the ol right now he is our QB verbiage. That is enough for my focus to now turn to QB early.

Not sure where the "experience" theme comes from.

Trask has played in 27 games, with 24 college starts, 813 pass attempts, the vast majority against the SEC.

Mac Jones has played in 30 games, with 20 college starts, 556 pass attempts, most against the SEC (obviously).

Trey Lance has played 19 games, 17 starts, 303 pass attempts, none against the SEC.

Justin Fields has played in 34 games, with 24 starts, 618 pass attempts.

Seems like a lot of us think college QB's need to be Trevor Lawrence, starting as a freshman and going to the playoffs three times.

I find this year very difficult to mock because we have no idea at all what the Steelers actually think about their OL. Obviously they have stated it needs improvement, but does that mean improvement in talent or improvement in coaching?

What does Canada’s scheme demand of the OL? What does new OL coach Klemm see when he watches film? Does he see some bums or does he see some guys with talent who were poorly coached and can be turned into solid starters?

I think Dotson will be a really good player. Decastro also has several good years left. They should be OK at 2 of 3 interior positions. Could Decastro shift over to Center like Jeff Hastings did? That may be a good idea because it’s usually easier to find a starting G than a smart C who can make all the calls and also pull and lead plays.

If the Steelers really like Banner and Chukes then maybe this OL is just a C/G away from being fixed in the Steelers minds.

What kind of OL would they be looking at anyway? Over the past decade or so, they have valued athletic players over power players. Is that still what Canada wants? Some spread college coaches actually like big Guards because they want good run blocking and figure their scheme can negate some pass rush with formation and play fakes.

so when you look at this draft, most have the Steelers drafting multiple OL with high picks. That may not be where the Steelers heads are.

Canada didn't have a choice at Pitt, but he had a terrific offense there so we can look at his offensive line there.

LT Adam Bisnowaty 6'5" 305 Lean build, lacked NFL level athleticism, but moved well enough for college
LG Dorian Johnson 6'5" 315 Big, mobile guard.
C Alex Officer 6'4" 335 Massive presence in the middle of the line
RG Alex Bookster 6'6" 315 Tackle who shifted inside
RT Brian O'Neill 6'6" 300 Incredibly athletic, probably one of the most mobile OT in college football this season

If Ben doesn't return and with QB class looking iffy next year I pull the trigger on a QB this year. In this scenario I might even trade up. Rudolph doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

If Ben doesn't come back - I'm throwing all my efforts into Mac Jones in the first round...

Mac has grown on me. Kid just looks like the type that is going to succeed despite any perceived short comings. I know his floor is average to backup. But there is enough positives there to pull the trigger at 24. Saying that I fully expect the kid to be a trade up if we want scenerio.
