Perhaps the difference in bringing in a scrub free agent due to an unexpected injury VS a competent free agent. At worse you roll over what you don't use and you are looking even better next season when locking up Mink and possibly QB hunting.

No. Just simple arithmetic. It is based off of if we payed him his option season at $10 mill. His first tag at $14 mill and his 2nd tag at $18 mill. About $42 mill for 3 years. 112 minus 42 is 80.

But there's no guarantee Watt would've played under the franchise tag. You can't just assume that he would.

I'm just glad the guy is finally signed. His contract is expensive, but I'm glad he's going to be a Steeler for a long time. They can probably kiss Minkah goodbye, though.

Per Florio/PFT the details of TJ's contract have emerged

1. Signing Bonus: $35.0 million.

2. 2021 Base Salary: $1.0 million, fully guaranteed. (lowers this year's cap hit to $8M)

3. 2022 Base Salary: $24.0 million, fully guaranteed.

4. 2023 Base Salary: $20.0 million, fully guaranteed.

5. 2024 Base Salary: $21.05 million.

6. 2025 Base Salary: $21.05 million.

Franchise tag for LBs is valued at $15,657,000 this year (2021). It'll be over $16M next year. So the $14 M you're using is a tad off. Additionally, the second franchise tag would be a value of 122% of the salary he would receive under the first tag.

Also, the $112M total was not for the first 3 years. It was the total for the whole 5 years of the contract. So, you'd need to subtract the $21,050,000 he's set to receive for 2024 and the $21,039 he's set to receive for 2025 from that five year total to compare the numbers for 3 years. Now, off the top of my head, you come up with a difference of around $35M, but either TJ walks after 2023 or you end up paying him another contract which includes a signing bonus and salaries that would most likely push his 5 year compensation above $112M.
