Seems he will be released by the Fins. We could get him back at near league min, plus still get the 6th-7th round comp pick for losing him last year.

If we can get for league min., go for it. Signing back Gay sure worked out for us. He would be an upgrade of Blake, at the very least.

Absolutely... McCain still has elite speed. Most would have preferred him over Blake anyway. If McCain were to be signed... Blake is done.

Never wanted him to walk in the first place. He was a solid player for us and would at the very least provide valuable depth as a No. 3/4.

I'm pretty sure players like McCain are how we are going to "fix" our secondary. No doubt in my mind we continue the secondary by mediocre committee for another year.

I'd definitely be interested in bringing McCain back. He wouldn't cost too much either. As others have already said, let Blake walk, sign McCain and re-sign Gay. The secondary is already improved right there. Then see if you can sign either a mid tier CB or Safety once free agency starts and then concentrate on the other position early in the draft. Also, so much depends on Senquez Golson and what he can provide. Even if he can play in the nickle package and provide some help it would be huge. .

He's better than Blake

Looks like every single free agent cornerback is better than Blake.

Lots of rankings out there. But if you look at stats--Smith 29 yrs old-45 tackles-12 passes defensed-2 int-0 forced fumbles. Blake 26yrs old-76 t-11 pds-2ints-1 ff. Significant upgrade? Blakes first year as a starter. We on the Board haven't always been right on CB's either. Remember how anxious we were to dump Gay and how much heat we gave Tombert for not spending 6M+ to not retain Lewis?

how about how many yards given up thru the air air and missed tackles?

the answer to your significant upgrade question is

Blake is good for one or two pretty good plays a game, either a big hit or a nice pass breakup. The problem is that he also makes 4 or 5 bad plays a game that usually result in big yardage whether they are poor tackles, missed coverage or bad angles. The bad outweighs the good so they have to move on.

Not necessarily given the fact that it's unlikely that they won't retain Boykin. That situations still irritates me. As long as Blake is gone, though, it will be addition by subtraction. I'd like to have him back as a No 4/5, but don't trust the staff after watching them trot him onto the field time and time again last season.

However blake has fundamental issues with stiff hips, its not an experience thing, and has a history of letting up big plays because he is always going for the big hit, and for two years now has shown to be a sub par tackler... its obvious they like him for his hitting, but that does not make him a good corner... he is a liability that is challenged so often that the stats he has are just a byproduct of the ridiculous amount of times he was targeted.

I don't know why people are down On Keenan Lewis... he played this season with a Groin tear and the saints D is utterly atrocious... he is a much better CB than we have on the roster right now, and that includes gay, who had a fabulous season, but did benefit from teams testing Blake so much

Blake on vet min fighting for a roster spot with Grant and a rookie at the start of camp would be ok for me.
Gay, FA, Cockrell, Golson, Blake, Grant, rookie (3rd/4th rounder)

I don't even know why people bring up Keenan Lewis. He wanted to play for the Saints and left I don't know why some people seem to hold resentment to the front office for that. The Steelers offered him a bigger contract than the one he signed to play in New Orleans. What more can you do? He obviously wanted to go back home and did.

Look at where Morris Claiborne is,could you imagine how pissed we would be? I mean he was what # 6 overall, and the Cowboys traded up to get him, giving up their 2nd.

Yes!

....but not missed tackles. Broken tackles. Blake was getting his lunch taken every play he was in for a tackle it seemed

I still think the Steelers re-sign Blake but he either signs cheap now or cheap later but they hopefully will stick to their guns and offer a 2-3 year 3-5 million dollar deal. I could see them going as high as 3 million a year for Gay and then release Allen or he takes a significant pay cut. If he doesn't take a pay cut sign McCain to a 2 year cap friendly deal to compete. I honestly don't see Boykin wanting to play here after we started Blake over him for so long.
