Over a decade in the NFL and multiple Pro Bowls, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman, Cam Heyward has been nominated by his team to be their candidate for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. As a member of the community in the great city of Pittsburgh, Heyward has made it a part of his off-field mission to be a transformative and impactful member of the community. This year’s nomination is Heyward’s fourth in his illustrious career.

“From a quality of play standpoint, from a quality leadership standpoint, from a guy that does things right inside this building and outside this building,” said Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin. “Cam is a guy that embraces all this game and business has to offer, and the many challenges that it presents. He works off the field the way he works on the field.”

As a seven-time defensive team captain, Heyward is not just a leader for the defensive unit, but for the whole team as a whole.

Heyward’s foundation The Heyward House has been a part of the Pittsburgh community for years and has made a huge impact on the entire city. During the early part of 2020, Heyward worked to support frontline workers by providing both food and personal protective equipment. Heyward had extreme asthma as a child and this was one of his motivations to take such a strong chance early on in the year. Heyward worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania to provide 250 buckets of hygiene supplies, food and cleaning supplies and launched a campaign to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club to purchase an additional 114 buckets for kids.

This is just one of the dozens projects he is involved with including when he began the Rufus and Judy Jordan Literacy Program as a result of his grandparents passing in June 2020. Part of the objective was to provide reading and literary materials to underserved communities in the Pittsburgh area. Heyward’s grandparents were both members of the Pittsburgh school system for over 30 years each. Heyward also works with other organizations such as the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation’s Voices of Hope Scholarship Awards, which are intended to give brain tumor patients or family members of those affected by a brain tumor diagnosis, the opportunity to pursue a post-secondary education at an accredited College, University, or technical school. Heyward also works with other initiatives to help the city with efforts such as gun violence, food donations, and countless other social and community driven operations to help the community. Heyward has been involved in this work since he first came into the league and has always been looking to help others around him, even if they don’t play for the Steelers on Sundays.

I hope he wins it overall. Humble but yet speaks with authority when it comes to his defense. Also I like his recently developed demeaner when it comes to gut punch.
