Bowl season is here and we have record opt outs and transfers. Only one more year of a 4 team playoff before it expands to 12 teams in 2024, which is good news. They can only exclude America's team, the Penn State Nittany Lions for so long.

Penn State gets a good consolation as they will be playing in what is most likely the last ever traditional Rose Bowl with BIg 10 vs Pac 12. Next year the Rose is part of the 4 team playoff and in 24 there will be an expanded 12 team playoff so this is in some ways, the last Rose Bowl. It's very fitting to feature Penn State since 100 years ago, Penn State played in the very first Tournament of Roses game to be played and the brand new Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

I guess it will come in handy to post a link here to an opt-out tracker.

A few tidbits on each game for now

Friday 12/16

HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl - Nassau Bahamas
Miami vs UAB 11:30 AM ESPN UAB -11

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl - Orlando FL
25 UTSA vs 24 Troy 3:00 ESPN Troy -1

Saturday 12/17

Wasabi Fenway Bowl - Feway Park - Boston MA
Cincinnati vs Louisville 11 AM Cin -1
Cincy coach Luke Fickell has left for Wisconsin. And Cincy replaced him with Loiusivlle coach Scot Satterfield. Makes for a strange game. Louisville hired their ex-QB Jeff Brohm away from Purdue. Seems he's leaving Purdue due to NIL. Louisville has some donors willing to spend.

SRS Distrubution Las Vegas Bowl
Florida vs 14 Oregon State 2:30 ESPN ORST -10
Florida QB Anthony Richardson opted out and declared for the draft. Same for WR Justin Shorter who was a bust at Penn State and transferred to Florida a few years ago. What NFL team is in the market for a bad QB and a WR that doesn't know how to run routes?

Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl

6 Tennessee vs 7 Clemson 8:00 ESPN Clem -6.5

Saturday 12/31

Sugar Bowl - New Orleans
5 Alabama vs 9 Kansas State 12:00 ESPN Ala -6.5
Bama had a bunch of guys enter the transfer portal. I have a feeling this will become very common for the teams that are stocked with talent. Few 4 and 5 star kids will stick around somewhere if they aren't starting, especially if tyhey can make money switching schools.

The good news for Bama is that as of now, Saban says there are no opt-outs, meaning guys like Bryce Young and Will Anderson will play.

Music City Bowl - Nashville
Iowa vs Kentucky 12:00 ABC Iowa -2.5
With an over/under of just 31, Vegas is telling you what they thnk about this one. That's 11 points lower than the next lowest total of 42 for Syracuse vs Minn. Kentucky QB WIll Levis Opted out for the draft. Iowa QB Spencer Petras is injured, their #2 is in the portal so they will start their #3 QB who has never attempted a pass. Maybe that over under is still too high.

A word on Levis. I see him talked about as a possibly 1st rounder. has anybody seen him play? He looks the part, big arm and mobile, but he's just not a natural passer.

Playoff
Fiesta Bowl - Glendale AZ
3 TCU vs 2 Michigan 4:00 ESPN Mich -7.5
Blake Corum is out for Michigan but they have a solid backup so that shouldn't be an issue. TCU has been doubted all year and has been in lots of tough games. Michigan has mostly cruised. Illinois was the only team to really slow their run game and MIch struggled to score. Currently Michigan is at 66.6% win probablity on ESPN. More proof that Harbaugh is a dark and evil force.

Playoff
Peach Bowl - Atlanta GA
4 Ohio State vs 1 Georgia 8:00 ESPN UGA -6.5
I'm surprised ESPN is going back to New Year's eve for the playoff. I believe last time they did that the ratings were down. If you are not in Ohio or Georgia and your girl wants to go out for New Year's, you're not winning that argument. At least not withot paying a heavy cost later. Like 10 years later you'll hear about that ****.

What a difference a few weeks make. Before the Michigan loss, most assumed Ohio State was too much for them, that last year's loss was a fluke and Ryan Day would have a brilliant gameplan. Then Ohio State got bullied and now the perception is that OSU backed into the playoff, is butter soft and Day may just be living off the team Urban Meyer built.

OSU does have the talent to win this. Do they have the heart? If OSU gets physically dominated, it could lead to a pressure filled offseason and Day answering questions.

Monday Jan 2

ReliaQuest Bowl - Tampa FL
22 Miss State vs Illinois 12:00 ESPN2 Ill -1
Hard to tell how Miss state will respond after the death of coach Mike Leach. Two complete opposites. Wide open passing vs physical running team.

Cotton Bowl - Arlington TX
16 Tulane vs 10 USC 1:00 ESPN USC -2.5
right now Caleb Williams is planning to play but who knows if that's true. This will be one of the biggest games ever for Tulane and a huge letdown for USC. How hard will USC play?

Citrus Bowl - Orlando FL
17 LSU vs Purdue 1:00 ABC LSU -14
funny that former ND coach Chip Kelly's first SEC bowl is against his former in state rival Purdue. LSU has much better athletes but Purdue is a solid team with a 6th year QB that can make LSU pay if they don't play disciplined. But then Purdue's coach Jeff Brohm left for the job at his alma mater Louisville and then QB Aiden O'Connell opted out for the draft. Hard to see Purdue putting up a fight without those 2.

Rose Bowl - Pasadena CA
11 Penn State vs 8 Utah 5:00 ESPN Utah -2.5
Penn State will be without CB Joey Porter Jr and top WR Parker Washington. Utah will be without TE Dalton Kincaid, RB Tavion Thomas. Still unclear if LT Olu Fashanu will play for PSU. If he does it will make a huge difference.

In terms of style, I don;t love this matchup for Penn State. Utah is a physical run team. Penn State's defense played much tougher after Michigan. The PSU offnes really misses Washington at WR. With weeks of bowl prep, maybe one of the young WRs can step up.

Will Drew Allar play? Most PSU fans want to see him. No doubt Clifford will start and play most of the game but they have to want to get Allar out there. If Allar can have a few big moments in the ROse Bowl it could really spur recruiting. Particlualy at WR where they are targeting quite a few in the transfer portal.

I guess stranger things have happened, but I'm gonna be shocked if Georgia doesn't beat the $%^& out of whoever they face in the playoffs.

I love the start time on my alma mater's bowl game. 9pm for the New Orleans bowl?

Penn State will be missing some key starters from the season. That will make it even tougher against Utah.

The most Fabulous time of the year!

Love college bowl season!

Although the opt outs are putting a real damper on some of the games.

On the bright side … the teams with the most critical opt outs are probably teams to wager against…
Wagering requires a plan… and that might be a good one?

Enjoy men and hope your fav team wins!
Unless their playing mine, but I’m sure we don’t have any GameCOCK fans on this board! 😁

While I understand the mentality of opting out, I don't understand it as well.

An injury can occur at any time, the first day of camp, or getting hit by a bus.

Right. Why not opt out once your team loses its 3rd or 4th game and is out of contention for a conference or national title? Many of the players opting out of meaningless bowl games just recently played in meaningless regular season games.

The 9 time National Champion Pitt Panthers will be once again without their starting quarterback, Slovis opting for the portal.

Guess he broke up with his girlfriend.
Yeah---I heard that...

Notre Dame's starting QB is not playing in their bowl either..

I will be betting against both teams....as much as I hate to do that.
But $$$$ talks....

With the portal transfers and the NFL opt-outs, are bowl games really relevant anymore? I guess the playoff games are since very few portal moves but the rest should not have any real effect on who is really a better team.

OR

by playing in a “Bowl” game that has no bearing on your career / life.

I hope the “Tony the Tiger bowl allows a win to PITT.

Only once in my lifetime, but it occurred in my senior year, so that was cool.
Didn't they win when Tony Dorsett played and Johnny Majors was coach? That seems like forever ago, so I may not be remembering correctly.

Stayed up too late to watch Boise State beat UNT Mean Green. Really wanted UNT to win, to honor Mean Joe Green, but that's life. It was a good game.
