Bitonio has the athleticism to be a LT and the position versatility to be a guard or center.

Lynch has a ton of ability but never put it together. Get him into camp see if we can coach him up.

Again a ton of potential. Father former NFL player and he has only player football a few years.

Kerr is short, thick, powerful anchor.

I'd be shocked if Ryan Shazier could be moved inside in the 3-4. His skills seem to be outside in a 3-4 defense. He has an explosive first step, great edge speed, and he has good closing speed. All his weaknesses are magnified if you move him inside. He can get lost in the wash, he overruns a lot of plays, and he has problems diagnosing plays. He doesn't have a lot of power to get away from people. Moving him inside would be a mistake IMHO.

Navorro Bowman and Timmons looked to be OLB. His learning curve might be effected but if our defense is so complicated anyway why not. Shazier is a very good pass defender and would be a nice stunt and inside blitzer.

Almost nobody outside of Tomlin thought Timmons would be an OLB in a 3-4. TMC, myself and several others talked all the time about WTF are they doing drafting him to be an OLB? I still think Timmons would work better in a 4-3. I don't think Shazier can handle blitzing inside. Just my opinion and I could be wrong but I see him as an OLB.

I am with you. I think Shazier is a 3-4 WLB that needs to be on a defense that can protect him and allow him to run. He HAS to stay clean. He gets caught too often in the wash. He has never met a block he can slip. He is not all that great in coverage. In fact, in some of the film I watched, he bites on play action, takes 2-3 steps forward, realizes he is f'ed, turns his back to the QB and runs to his spot. Everytime the QB throws while Shazier has his back to him. Never fails. And, it is not like he is a gap shooter that makes a bunch of plays in the backfield (like LaVonte David and Spence did). He will get too close to the line while trying to slide and get caught by a guard. He gets jacked up too by blockers, not just blocked, but looses his feet because they catch him and jack him up.

I remember people bitching about Timmons inability to hold the point and make the play. Timmons could read it. He filled the lane. He just did not shed the block and make the play as well as previous ILBs. Shazier makes Timmons look like a run stuffing God.

I do not know if I take Shazier in the top 3 rounds, but that is just me. I happen to like ILBs that will knock someone on his ***, not get knocked on his ***.

Also, I think Chris Borland, all 5114 of his nonathletic *** should go ahead of Shazier. Shazier is a much better athlete. Borland is a better football player.

I just finished watching several games' worth of Borland. Yes, he's a heady football player. But he redefines the term "deliberate." Every movement requires him to stop, turn, and re-position before he can react. And when a lineman locks onto him, it's almost comical to watch him flap his arms. I know that arm length is usually one of those over-analyzed Kiper numbers ("This guy's arms are 1/16" off the average! Undraftable!") but when you're so behind the 8-ball in a key measurable and it bleeds into your whole game, it's worth considering. The 40 doesn't really matter, but if a WR runs a 4.85, the 40 matters. So it is with Borland's arms, by far the shortest in the class. They not only erase him from any play in which an OL gets to him, they also affects his tackling. He lines up properly, explodes into the ballcarrier, etc. But too often, he gets wriggled away from because he can't wrap. I've got a fourth-round grade on him. I don't see how he (intentionally) starts anywhere for more than a season here and there.

Shazier's a work in progress, but it's not born out of laziness or weakness or cowardice. He punches and fights. But no, I don't see a Mack fit in our defense. Shayne Skov looks like a hell of a Mack to me; he may wind up on the same level as Mosley.

TMC - your take on Jimmie Ward?

Ward played a lot of free safety this season. I think it took away from what he does best. As a deeper safety, he does not read well and can be slow to react. It makes him slow to support the run. His coverage angles as a deep safety need work. Just does not seem to fit him.

But, if you go back to his 2012 film, where he was a true strong, he was much more aggressive. He even tackled better, being a guy that cut the legs or wrapped up. He attacked the line and played the run better. He appeared more comfortable in man coverage. Decent size, good athlete for the position. He has some upside as a strong, do not know if he would ever be a great one, but could be a starter. I think he is a pretty safe pick. Don't know if I like him higher than the 3rd though.

I think Mettenberger could sneak into the first round. IMO, he is probably as talented as any of the top tier QBs, maybe not as flashy and his offense was not as dependent on him, but I think he is as talented. So, if I can get a guy like that in the 4th, I would not care if his name was Burger B. Bergerburger.

I was going to comment on that. Of course Matthews isn't falling to 15th either. Mettenberger absolutely could go in the first round. I think he will at least make it in the 2nd.
