Is the Steelers Most Intriguing Topic of the Off-Season Mike Tomlin? How Will He Grow as Head Coach?

It’s been a roller coaster of an off-season for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and with the 2022 NFL Draft still yet to happen, things can get even more exciting. But the single most important thing Steelers fans should look forward to this upcoming season is not the quarterback room, not the defense that has warranted the most money this off-season, not our retooled offensive line, it’s head coach Mike Tomlin and what he can do with the team.

Tomlin’s Track Record

Tomlin is a sure-fire Hall of Fame coach with one Super Bowl win to his name and 15 straight non-losing seasons with the Steelers. But it’s the latter that is becoming more egregious as each season passes. There’s been no shortage of talent over the past few years under Tomlin’s realm with names like Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell, Maurkice Pouncey, and of course, Ben Roethlisberger, all donning the black and gold. Unfortunately, when all these players were on the same team, they never could hoist the coveted Lombardi trophy. Echoes of mediocrity are growing louder and louder as Tomlin enters his 16th year at the helm.

Steelers Tomlin Ben

Mike Tomlin will be without Ben Roethlisberger around at all for the first time.

“Our agenda, this year, is to get into [the] single-elimination tournament and then pit our skills against others in that single-elimination tournament in an effort to win the world championship. That’s our mentality every year,” said Tomlin in a January interview with Brook Pryor, ESPN beat reporter for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There’s also the argument that Tomlin’s Super Bowl victory piggybacked off the success of former head coach Bill Cowher, one that came three years after Cowher’s retirement. With Roethlisberger now gone, he was the final piece of the Cowher-led team, so the light is shining brighter than ever on Tomlin to not only win, but to make the playoffs, and to get back to the promised land.

Looking Ahead to 2022 for the Steelers

With the off-season addition of Brian Flores as the Senior Defensive Assistant/Linebackers Coach and the promotion of Teryl Austin to Defensive Coordinator, perhaps this will allow Tomlin to use a more hands-off approach to a defense that he reportedly is heavily involved with. Being the defensive-minded coach that he is, this should come as little surprise to Steeler Nation, but something that may need to be changed heading into 2022. “As much as I’d like to have been more involved in calling defenses and stuff, I wanted to do what was best for the team and what was best for the defense,” says Keith Butler, former defensive coordinator for the Steelers in an interview with 93.7 The Fan. “Mike is the head coach and Mike can do what he wants to… the last few years of Dick Lebeau, Mike was still calling the defenses, too,” he adds. The Steelers are leading the NFL so far in defensive spending this off-season that gives plenty of weapons for Austin and Flores that can hopefully lead to a top-tier defense in the NFL.

Looking on the offensive side, there’s no shortage of talent, and that talent is young and primed to breakout with Mitch Trubisky looking to lead the way. Last year, the offense ranked near the bottom of the league in total yards, so Tomlin and offensive coordinator, Matt Canada, will need to head to the lab to see how they can make the most out of the weapons they have.

The team is talented and Tomlin will again look to keep his non-losing streak alive, but he’ll need to set the precedent for his new-look coaching staff and players to follow, to make a run in the playoffs, and to bring the seventh championship back to the Steel City. Only time will tell.

This is the first time in a long time I don't think the Steelers have a big, face-of-the-franchise type personality on the team. Heyward is a leader and you have superstar defenders in Watt and Fitzpatrick, but none of these guys are in the same mold of Roethlisberger, Bettis, Ward, Porter, AB, etc. Claypool is probably the biggest personality on the team and he really hasn't produced enough to be a national personality. It may be one of the easiest teams for Tomlin to manage, however, they cannot lean on pure talent as they have in the past. It's going to require top notch coaching and scheming to get the most out of this roster.

He reached his ceiling long time ago
Exactly. His ceiling is 10 to 12 wins and a first round playoff loss. It's simply as good as he knows how to be.

Guy is not real smart as evidenced by him making the same mistakes year after year after year, clock management, lack of in game adjustments, losing to the dregs of the league, horrible game plans and sticking with bad OCs. Just too stubborn, rigid and lacking any semblance of mental agility and unable to think on his feet when needed the most. 7-10and finally the bullshit no losing seasons goes by the wayside and 3 playoff wins in 12 years becomes the new reality, FINALLY.

I don't see a sudden change in dynamic Xs & Os traight up happening.

I don't see sudden "hear's the reigns, take over" being issued to Coordinators.

Clock / time outs / challenges / in game adjustments / dog-house players / low grade popcorn / where's the butter are all slow to happen.

Game plans and playing down to low end competition will happen but may be pulled out wins due to actual talent on the fireld saving the game.

A non-losing season seems to be the standard but JUST added........ blow out playoff loss is in the mix as well.

Maybe this is the year he puts it all together only to be tasked with his presence back to form for 10 ore years.

This is Tomlin's 15th season as Head Coach. Sadly I don't see much more growth happening.
Growth was what we wanted with game management after he went for 2 from the 12 against the Jaguars in year 1. That never happened for starters.

He better hope the his OC and DC can save him. Colbert is gone next year. Not much for Mikey to stand on. The last time we won a playoff game was 2016. Something like 22 NFL teams have won at least one playoff game since 2017.

I have confidence with the defensive staff combo of Austin/Flores. We have no reason to believe Canada will bring anything innovative to the table.

Actually Tomlin is entering year #16 in 2022. Can't blame you though...it all kind of melds together.

He'll grow his never-had-a-losing-season streak. 8-8-1, baby!

Now that the big bad HOF QB is done shading the coach from the spotlight MT will finally grow into his full potential.

Obviously he won’t blink at the opportunity to stand tall in the sunlight, with his pedigree he will likely grow into a fifth dimension where we can’t even see the streak of awesomeness he’s laying down.

Tomlin has grown into an egotistical, stubborn, micro managing coach that has had the bar lowered for him over the years. Meaning a non losing season is good enough and if a playoff game occurs, going out in round one is not a big deal with this owner. You’ve got an average coach who can attract good players but can’t always keep them. He’s been built up to be more than he ever was and has the good fortune of having a franchise QB for all of his career. He’s had excellent talent, good enough to have gotten us to a least another two SB’s from 2011 to 2018. Most importantly the guy has what other coaches envy in job security. It’s too easy over there on the SS and Rooney thinks his organization will go in the tank without Tomlin. If this coach was anywhere other than Pittsburgh he would have been fired long long ago. Imo, the time to break away from Tomlin was after the embarrassing playoff loss to the Jags in the first round in 2018.
