It was not a coincidente that the defense improved against the run when playing with 3 big DTs upfront. Call it a 4-3 if you want to see Watt as a DE but the truth is that without 3 mammoths up there the team was getting gashed on the ground. Whether it was Leal as the 3rd DT or Adams or Wormley it helped a lot

The D needs 3 DTs up front in early downs and short yardage situations.
Well yes the more bigs you have on the field the better you do vs. Run. The problem is the chess match of sub package. So now you get trapped trying to cover a speedy receiver with one less defensive back. Looking back on those big Steelers defenses you had a big nose that couod still get after the Q. And you didn't have to sub all the time. You also had a DB that played like a LB so you had way more flexibility. But those players don't grow on trees.

I think the cry about the 2 DL thing is as laughable as saying the Steelers play 34 defense. TJ Watt is a defensive End people he is not a linebacker. He probably drops coverage less than 10 times a year. A true nose is like a fullback. You might even have one on the team, but unless he can play multiple techs in multiple situations he is only playing short yardage.
I'd venture to guess that Watt drops back in coverage more than 10 times a year. He did so more than 150 times in his rookie season alone. It's nowhere near that total these days, but it's still greater than ten. He's decent in coverage, but he's much better utilized by rushing the passer.

You SIR are absolutely right. This defensive scheme doesn’t want (require) a NT Type, most of the time.

Salute the nation

Actually if you look at Adams and Alualu’s snap counts, they employ those bigger NT sized DTs in a little over half the snaps on defense…. The OLBs in the 3/4 were mostly just undersized DEs in the 4/3… you can swing most of them in or out of those roles, and Heyward can be a 3/4 DE or a 4/3 DT… but they still need that really big body that at least can flex into the 3/4 NT position when they run it…

Bottom line is that the 3-4 zone blitz is gone. It's Tomlin's defense and it's predicated on sending 4 and letting them hunt when the 7 hold up in coverage. I'd prefer a lot of things the way they were but not happening.
