I saw a Twitter thread after the game last night and its just mind boggling the coaching staff hasn't figured this **** out yet. We can NOT have our LBs covering WRs. This is a recipe for disaster and the Chargers exploited the ever living **** out of it in the second half

The Steelers get owned by the Patriots using these idiotic defensive concepts. They really thought they could cover Keenan Allen with a LB most of the game, and especially on the game's biggest play. https://t.co/XLGKahCvfy
— Warren Sharp (@SharpFootball) December 3, 2018

If there ever is a thing to complain about this coaching staff, its their lack of in game adjustments. They had a great game plan to start the game and after the Chargers adjusted our defense went to ****.

Aside from the utter disgrace of the officials last night, this right here is the key to us beating teams that spread us out and neutralize our LBs. I thought drafting Edmunds and getting all the corners and safeties out there was supposed to be the fix to this problem. Maybe Burnett being a grey sweatsuit injury bum and/or Artie Burnt relegated to the netherland of wasted first round draft pick has altered our ability to field this type of scheme.

Either way, this team has to address the defensive scheme.

Keith Butler needs to go.

And the other coach that has his hands in the D too.

If we could get a DC that would be left alone, I wouldn't mind Tomlin staying. Thing is I am not so sure that could happen.

It was so frustrating to watch the Steelers continue to try to cover Allen, one of the better receivers in the league, with linebackers. What was worse is that after continued failure at this strategy, they stuck with it.

We do this every week and have been for more than a year. First series of the game and we had Bud Dupree covering Allen. In what ******* universe do you have an OLB covering the opposing teams number 1 WR? And, it wasn't some miscommunication, Bud lined up outside right in front of Allen. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know what the hell “look at me i’m A mad genius” butler is even thinking I don’t think even shazier on his best day could cover K Allen the whole game little alone bud Dupree trying to do it.... horrible scheming pure and simple.... they simply refuse to line up four guys two inside two outside and rush the fing qb and defeat the blocking on runs dropping everyone else in coverage and they continue to get thumped. We get sacks we don’t pressure the qb... and we get ran ove4 trying to stop the run because blockers can force there will on our undermanned two man line... I can’t hardly watch our “defense” operate... I said when we scored our last td it was too early the defense hasn’t been able protect a lead in a coons age.

well, we know:

Watt can't cover a TE (see Kelce; but few can)
Vince can't cover a WR
Durpee can't cover a WR
Fort can't cover a WR
Bostic can't cover a WR

any other LBs want to step up and try being a CB?

Not only is it a LB covering a WR, he’s playing very soft. I could have completed that pass. Makes you wonder if they are even aware of where the downmarker is.

Should be called the how to lose a game defense. I don't get it at all other than trying to lose.

why the **** did they drafted two Safeties and got one more in FA? they need to put those guys to play in those situations.

Look how disruptive Derwin James was in every ******* facet of Defense. I know our guys are no Derwin but you get my point, you need a guy that can play close to the line but with coverage skills. If Edmunds can't be that guy then put dangerfield or allen the rookie S. Hope Burnett heals soon and for good

The 3-4 zone blitz scheme just wont work if u have dont have a true NT dominating the middle. You get gashed vs the pass as well as the run if u dont, and thats the D we have.

They can only keep up play for a half, then get worn out and fall apart.

Joe Haden is the best CB we have had for the last 5 years, and he cant cover everyone.

All that "we draft our own" bullshit is a complete failure when it comes to DBs, we cant draft ****.

Either way, this team has to address the defensive scheme.

According to Steelerdepot and my eyes this happened from the first drive to the last drive. It was the original game plan. They didn't have to adjust to it.

Tomlin is just as responsible for this as Butler is IMHO. He signs off on the game plan. He had to sign off on this. They should clean house Tomlin, Butler, Porter ETC... I'd keep Fitchner and promote Munchak to HC.

What a clusterfuck this defense is right now. This is on Tomlin as well as Butler. He's the one that wanted to change the defense. His finger prints are all over this defense.

Definately PORTER needs to go but more importantly we need a whole new DC from outside the organization and while we are at it, YES, CMVLT needs to be shown the door with respect but a hard loud swing shut as he is tossed out.

Reality is CMVLT is going NO where as he still has I think one more year on his extention contract. The Rooney rule is in effect but 10 times over for the Rooney's. Tradition, longevity of coaches as we've had ONLY three in the last umpteen zillion years.....(what a thing to hold onto).

Bottom line is TOMLIN wins just enough to keep his ******* job and we don't know the depth of the "FIX" of the NFL and maybe the STEELERS are where the league wants them to be. When there is that much money involved, there is GAURANTEED fix.

For real this is a very underrated point

We draft Edmunds, we draft Marcus Allen, and we sign Morgan Burnett. All 3 big safeties who hit hard and are fast enough to not be liabilities in coverage. Why would you load up on players like this if not to.. cover WRs in the slot across in the middle..? Every single thing about our defensive scheme last night makes me want to destroy things in my apartment

Says it all

Keenan Allen was targeted 9 times when a Steelers linebacker was the nearest defender. No wide receiver has been targeted more against a linebacker in a game since #NextGenStats began tracking nearest defender metrics in 2016.#LACvsPIT #FightForEachOther pic.twitter.com/J4jOev3nER

Until they change up the scheme, that D will always be vulnerable in this situation.

The cheats and Saints will be licking their chops looking at game film.

Here are some analogies for Butler/Tomlin to work on.

Defensive back::wide receiver and electrician::electrical

Linebacker::wide receiver and plumber::electrical

Some people here don’t like stats, but that one is amazing. No adjustments.

Sometimes the defense has just two defensive lineman in the goal line defense. Another what the heck are they doing.

That gives them the highest probability of failure. Slowest guy vs fastest guy of other team who knows the direction he's going. The only chance this defense has to make stops is with the pass rush. Get creative. Give your fastest guys off the line a chance for success. I'd be working hard with a guy like Ola. He's got the best burst of the whole lot. He just needs work. Watt is the other guy who can get in as well. If they can't get in and you have to count on the secondary defense your goose is cooked.

The corpse rots from the head down. How many coordinators do we have to sacrifice before we learn that lesson? How many before the Rooney’s admit it?
