Here is a free agent that is still available that if healthy can make a difference at ILB. He turns 30 in a month and can still play at least 2 downs.

Some options still out there sure, the Steelers need to find one that interests. Maybe a final cut-down option that becomes attractive depth possibility...

We signed Bostic to start, play all 3 downs and call the signals on D. Barring an injury I don't see how Bowman fits. He's not going to compete for a job or work for peanuts.

Always that option or sit home and make nothing.

Best case Bostic gives us what farrior did... worse case he’s a thumper just comes in on run downs.... truth is probably somewhere in the middle he should be more than serviceable... I hope Navo catches on somewhere outside the north preferably hes good guy

We're ****** if he ends up playing 3 downs

I am on the fence with this opinion.I don't think Bostic is a sure fire can't handle coverage responsibilities.

But if that rings true in camp, it is a little more comforting they have some safety options to throw into the mix.

So long as Vince is never in coverage then that's fine. Bostic has to be better than that. He's also the guy that will be calling the signals as he has a lot of experience getting people lined up. Just a big if about whether he can stay healthy or not.

Then again who knows Bostic could replace VW on third downs. Im sure in some formations and down and distances might require a LB next to Edmunds/Burnett. And some we might use both Edmunds and Burnett as LBs

Yep a lot of possibilities bringing in S's capable of wearing different hats.

I wouldn't limit it t third downs either.

Because if teams are getting too many first downs on 1st and 2nd down in the air, they could tweak the S's in earlier. Especially if one of the two show capable at handling ILber duties. Similar to what Shazier did. Edmunds would be my silver dollar guess to take on this.

I hate to say it... but, I think Timmons ends up on the roster at vet minimum. Obviously, at 32... he is a buck only. However, he knows the defense and could be an emergency mack as well.

The more im looking at could be Allen..

Allen adds another tough-minded safety to the Steelers' defensive back trove, though I believe he could be used in a linebacker-type role to take advantage of his toughness and agility.

Marcus Allen is a classic box-safety who is strong against the run, but he might be limited as a coverage player. His run-stop percentage of 8.3 when lined up in the box ranked fifth in the nation in 2016, and he's posted grades of 88.0 and 83.4 against the run the past two years.

Or like you said eventually both. Burnett may have at least 2 maybe 3 years here. Edmunds is the more versatile player between him and Allen.

Things of note, we cleared some cap space when trading Bryant, I think $1.3M this year. That gives us more room should we need to go out and sign someone.

The plan was to trade up for Evans and the Rats let Tennessee jump whoever our trading partner was so they could take him. They didn't value any of the ILBs after Evans came off the board.

We're going to see a very different defense this year with hybrid S/ILB when Bostic comes off the field unless they do go sign someone else.

Agreed, and I think we cut Wilcox also. I believe would be another 3 million in savings.

Bostic won't come off the field. Vince Williams will come off when we go dime.

ARTICLEOops, All Safeties: Why The Steelers Went So Heavy In The Secondary
ByAlex KozoraPosted on April 30, 2018 at 9:30 am

Two safeties. Zero linebackers. And a thousands of confused Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans.

Yesterday, we wrote why the team passed up on taking any inside linebackers. Today’s article is a similar story but a different angle. Why did Kevin Colbert load up on so many safeties? Two of their seven picks, Terrell Edmunds in the first and Marcus Allen in the fifth, without a linebacker in sight.

Part of is has to do with what we wrote yesterday. The Mack linebacker can’t be a specialized position and all the team was left with were a bunch of specialists. Pittsburgh adjusted their strategy and followed the trend of the league.

As Colbert and Mike Tomlin have referenced time and time again, the league has evolved from just 4-3 or 3-4. It’s sub-package, hybrid-heavy world. Pittsburgh played with at least five defensive backs on the field over 60% of the time. That means you need flexibility, versatility, and depth.

You need players to match up against every personnel grouping, every matchup, and be flexible – there’s that word again – to run whatever scheme is required for the gameplan that week. When you have speed, safeties over linebackers, you’re able to do that. And as we mentioned, what you give up in run defense from the position is helped by the fact these heavy sub-packages often happen in clear passing situation – third and long.

Now, don’t expect the the Steelers to go punch-drunk with getting safeties on the field. They’re still going to play their base 3-4 against heavy personnel on early downs, their 2-3-5 nickel versus 11 in the same situations. But on third and long, they’ll be all the more flexible and all the more effective.

2017 was Keith Butler’s most complex defense. There were 11 personnel groupings, all the way from goal line to 3-4, to 3-3-5, to even a couple snaps with seven DBs on the field (2-2-7). Adding the firepower to have guys who can come down in the box, cover tight ends, play the deep half, single high, blitz, support the run, roam sideline to sideline, it opens up the playbook all the more.

Again, there are short and long-term concerns about the Mack linebacker position. But instead of forcing the issue with a guy the Steelers didn’t think fit, they went all-in on a different route. Safety depth is just as important as corner because you’re often going to have three on the field. Now, Pittsburgh is insulated, with a depth chart going from Davis to Burnett, Edmunds, Allen, and Nat Berhe, all who are starter capable and/or starting experience.

I kinda dig it. It’s a new-wave approach, getting ahead of the curve. For an old-school team, an old-school approach, the Steelers are helping to lead the charge.

*I hope you all get the reference in the title, easily the dumbest thing I’ve ever written. I’m so sorry.
