Guys jumping ship but we're only signing guys to 1 year contracts. Seems pointless. Why only sign them for one year. That isn't building a team. That is basically renting a team for a year and then doing it all over again. Seems stupid unless they have other guys in mind to sign to longer contracts.

If the Pens are going to build a contender, one of Crosby, Malkin, Letang or Fleury has to go. Maybe even Martin or Kunitz. Ditching Scuderi would help. Lotsa money tied up in those guys.

guys that are gone, needed to go this year....the crop was a little thin, maybe, but the sky isn't exactly falling, either.

Rebuild? More like retool.

Pens just added Steve Downie.

Got a first rate tool in Downie. The lad is certifiable. Hope he's calmed down and matured some; he can certainly stir things up.

Yeah, I didn't care for the GM hire, still seems like a stop gap and a weird move. The new coach I have no thoughts on as I know nothing at all about him to tell if it's a good or bad hire. But the players? We all knew this was coming, there's no shock to these guys moving on. That was the whole point of booting Danny and Shero out.

I am okay with all of these moves, including the Neal trade. This team needed a major shakeup.

Some good moves. Decent direction for the Pens, there indeed needed to be some changes throughout.

All the big signings went to the Western division. Works for me.

Blackhawks sign Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane to eight-year extensions

The Chicago Blackhawks announced that their dynamic forward duo of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane has signed identical eight-year extensions worth a reported $84 million each to remain with the club. Both had contracts set to expire after the 2014-15 season. Each deal comes with identical $10.5 million cap hits, which at this point will be the highest in the league when the deals begin in the 2015-16 season and are the first to surpass $10 million in the cap era.

Selected in back-to-back drafts, Toews and Kane joined the Blackhawks in the 2007-08 season and immediately helped to turn around the fortunes of a franchise that had long been irrelevant in the NHL.

Over their time in the Chicago, each has won a Conn Smythe Trophy while leading the Blackhawks to Stanley Cups in 2010 and 2013. Think the organization is a bit excited about that?

More to come.
