I wasn't expecting any Pirates news on Christmas Eve, but here we are.

Josh Bell traded to the Nationals.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">First baseman Josh Bell has been traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Washington Nationals, a source tells ESPN. Two young pitchers headed back to Pittsburgh.</p>— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) <a href="https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1342182277355286528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 24, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Pirates getting back Eddy Yean and Wil Crowe.

The team is a mess. No power, no pitching, sketchy fielding and baserunning, little hitting. I will never see another Pirate team make the WS.

Same. Yet I continue to buy on field hats.
I need to stop giving these ******** my money. Same for their minor league club in Bradenton.

As much as I would say Bell has been a disappointment other than the great half season that got him to the All Star Game, now he will probably go to the Nats and become a stud a la Gerritt Cole. With the way the Pirates are he'll probably be a .300 / 40 HR / 120 RBI guy next year.

We can never retain good players.

All for Nutting. Damn jackass

I know the Pirates have a horrific track record for that, but let's be real for a minute though...Bell is one of the worst fielding players in the league and has been all through his rise from the minor leagues. He doesn't run well because he's a big guy. So he's already a big liability everywhere except at the plate when he's hitting well and he has tons of power. And once he stopped hitting well a season and a half ago, his value dropped a lot. The Nats are betting he will start hitting next year, the Pirates aren't. We'll see what happens but I will tell ya I was shocked to read that Bell will be 29 years old at the end of this coming season.

The Pirates GM was talking about a fire sale after this trade. Well great, but we have no one to sell. Taillon is coming off Tommy John, I am just not sure who else we could get return for because they are all pretty much minor leaguers. Bell was the closest thing we had to a star and he only played great for like half a season. The team is a joke of a franchise at this point.

The guy that was talked about in trade more than Bell was Joe Musgrove. He had the best season of any Pirate pitcher and is relatively young. I figured he would go first. Adam Frazier is the other guy whose name comes up a lot but the return for him would most likely be pretty modest.

I agree but I think you nailed it on post #6

I stopped caring about the Pirates roughly ten years ago. If the owner doesn't care if they suck, why should I?

At this point I'm way more interested in the off season stuff than the actual season really. The baseball season holds my attention for about the first month. After enough losing occurs I tune out for the most part. I have little to no expectation of success.

Cherrington is clearly going for the tank for a few years to get the top pick as many times as possible to get as much young talent as possible. Then you just have to hope a few of the guys actually develop into stars with the Pirates that leads to a winning season before they have to sell them off.

Brah, they've been doing that for the last 25 years. How's it worked out?

They might actually have some pitching. Keller, Musgrove and Brault all pitched well last season, and Keller has the potential to be an elite-level starter. They will also get Taillon back from elbow surgery, but it is almost a certainty that he will be dealt in the summer if he pitches even remotely well the first half of 2021. Chad Kuhl came back from surgery this year and is interesting. He throws his fastball in the upper 90s with sink action. He needs consistency, though.

The position players look bleak. It may just be Ke'Bryan Hayes and nothing else. Bryan Reynolds has a lot of talent, but was really disappointing in 2020.

I'm guessing they're going to move Colin Moran to 1B to replace Bell. He could be adequate there until a long term replacement is found, assuming one ever is found.

They have virtually nothing major league caliber at SS, 2B, CF or RF.

100 losses seem like a lock for 2021, unless the pitching talent really comes together.

As long as Nutless is still the owner, neither will anyone else in the future.

How in the world did the Pirates get this much in return for Joe Musgrove?

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Pirates’ haul will be Hudson Head, David Bednar, Omar Cruz and Drake Fellows from Padres and Endy Rodriguez from Mets, per <a href="https://twitter.com/dennistlin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Dennistlin</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/JonathanMayo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@JonathanMayo</a>. <a href="https://t.co/dfJmy5lFt9">https://t.co/dfJmy5lFt9</a></p>— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) <a href="https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1351318277729955842?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 18, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Pirates’ haul will be a used bat, 6 used baseballs, 1 catcher's mitt and a worn out Tony Gwinn hat from the Padres and a Tom Seaver jersey from Mets.

Our new GM is all in on this rebuild.

I'm right here. Can't you understand plain English
Hope you're right. They've been rebuilding an awful long time. Almost 30 years. Personally I think they're essentially just a farm club for the big guys.

That said I'd really like to watch a playoff game at PNC one of these years. Not holding my breath for that day, bro, but I'd like to see it.

You know what? **** the Pirates. What a Mickey Mouse operation. They aren’t getting another nickel of my money until they field a winner.

I bought a hat from them again after I told myself the same thing.
I even bought a couple hats from the Bradenton Maurauders.

I need to stop funding them lol

At this point they are just trying to sell everyone off, load up the minor leagues and hoping for a year or two run before they have to sell everyone off again. Rinse and repeat. The only good thing about selling everyone off now is they don't have any bonafide stars to get rid of. They are getting rid of the best players they have who by major league standards are a little above average players. Of course once they go somewhere else, they will probably become well above average.
