According to ESPN’s NFL Reporter Jeremy Fowler, the Pittsburgh Steelers plan to place an original round tender on restricted free agent QB Dwayne Haskins. See his tweet below.

The Steelers have indicated to Dwayne Haskins that they plan to place a restricted free agent tender on him for 2022, per source, and Haskins expects that to be an original-round tender, paying in range of $2.5 million. Another suggestion Haskins is in QB mix in Pittsburgh.

The tender Fowler mentions pays Haskins a non-guaranteed $2.5 million in 2022, and lines up with previous comments made by Haskins stating that he was told he’d compete for the starting job in 2022.

The original round tender is the lowest tender possible to be assigned, but if a team attempted to sign Haskins away from the Steelers it would cost them a first round pick due to him being a 1st round pick back in 2019 by the Washington Football Team.

Haskins didn’t make any starts or see any playing time for the Steelers in 2021 after being signed last offseason by the team. He served primarily as the teams #3 QB.

It's a non comitted tender and litterally costs us nothing should he not make the team. Nearly as risk free as his original signing by us.

Why not ?

This was a given. Now, they will pick up at least one QB in free agency and/or possibly draft one.

Agreed. He will possibly be in his second year under the Canada system and probably is the better fit than Rudy. The only 2 ways I see Canada leaving are either if Art Jr shows him the door or if they bring in someone like Rodgers or Wilson (don’t see either happening) and they have Tomlin change the OC to come aboard…

Most no brainer decision ever… retain him or get a first round pick? Can cut him with no penalty? This is gravy. He either competes for the starter role or becomes expendable
