Per Ian Rapoport, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Mason Rudolph are closing in on a one-year extension:

Sources: The #Steelers are closing in on a 1-year extension with QB Mason Rudolph. Nothing done yet, but look for it soon for the Steelers’ backup. He’ll be signed through 2022.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 29, 2021

Rudolph has been the backup the past two seasons, and was a starter in 2019 when Ben Roethlisberger went down with an elbow injury. We congratulate Mason on his pending extension. We will update with terms on the deal as they are released.

That would be a good move. Terms will be interesting and probably telling of where they see him.

What in the brown backdoor buffoonery is going on??? Rudy didn't need an extension...
Sure it does. There is no QB on the roster signed through 2022. Rudolph is the fall back going into the draft next year when we definitely will be looking at QBs.

They kind of had to do this. Only 1 year and not a longer deal with incentives if he is the starter (or not), kind of tells me they don't think he is their long-term solution. That or they tried that route and he told them to pound sand.

It's just another move that indicates that this is Ben's last year and the Steelers will use next season as a transition year with Mason and all of the salary cap space. The goal will be to win again in 2023...when Najee Harris is halfway through his only contract with the team.

I guess if the plan is to bottom out completely in 2022 it's not a bad move.
