So What’s the Damage, Mr. Watt?

With T.J. Watt coming off of another season where he cemented himself as one of the top edge defenders in the NFL, the next step after this season and in the months leading up to it, the outside linebacker is available for a contract extension.

The big question at hand: how much are the Pittsburgh Steelers willing to invest into their top defensive player?

There are a couple options for the Steelers: sign a long-term contract, wait until the season is over and franchise tag him, let Watt hit free agency, or trade the star linebacker to another team.

The first case of signing Watt sounds like the best option to most people. The main thing about this option just comes down to the number of guaranteed money that Watt will receive. Like most other contracts, each top player to receive a new contract wants more guaranteed money than anyone else who previously signed their deal. We see this often with quarterbacks who sign large deals or frankly any top-of-the-line player who get their deals after another player signs. For the pass-rush position, the top two players in terms of guarantees right now are Joey Bosa and Myles Garrett. Bosa has $102 million in guarantees on his deal he signed in his July 2020 contract extension worth up to $135 million total. Right behind him is Garrett with $100 million in guarantees in his July 2020 contract extension that is worth up to $125 million. Garrett signed his deal on the 14th of July while Bosa signed his July 28th.

I’m certain that Watt will want to get more guaranteed than both Bosa and Garrett, and some are predicting he will come in around $105 million guaranteed with a total contract worth around the $150 million mark.

As for the second option, waiting until the season is over to franchise tag Watt instead of a long-term contract is much less of a possibility. The reason for this is the Steelers do not negotiate contracts after the summer until the season is over. So if a deal cannot come during this summer, the team will have to place the franchise tag on their star defensive player. According to OvertheCap.com, the projected franchise tag for Watt’s position would be $20,274,000. This would be a huge break for the Steelers, allowing them to put that giant contract off for another year. However, it has been reported that neither Watt nor the front office want this option.

Another option that the Steelers could pursue is for Watt to hit free agency. I mentioned this option on the SteelerNation Podcast with G Stryker and I wish I had thought about it more before I posed the question. If Watt were to hit free agency, there would be little chance that the Steelers would be able to bring him back. According to Spotrac.com, the Indianapolis Colts and the Steelers are the two teams with the most cap room in 2022. There are currently 9 teams that will have over $50 million in cap room next offseason as well and any of these teams could put in an extremely high bid on Watt that the Steelers might not want to match. If the Steelers want to get into a bidding war with another team, the price tag will get up much higher than the option of just a contract extension for Watt. This might be the most expensive option for the star player and might be one of the worst decisions for the franchise to make, especially if the team plans on keeping Watt, which all signs point to that they do.

As for a trade with another team? That is definitely not going to happen but if it were going to, we might see a Khalil Mack level trade which would give the Steelers two first round picks, a third round pick, and a sixth round pick. This kind of deal is more dependent on what the Steelers will receive in terms of draft compensation and then what players they pick with this package deal. In my opinion, this is a better deal than letting Watt hit free agency, especially if the team wants to get away from paying that huge contract. Once again, I don’t think this will happen but it is still fun to investigate.

Overall, Watt will most likely be staying in Pittsburgh for the long haul, probably until his career is over. Let’s hope that for the Steelers sake, he does not get injured or hold out for a larger pay day.

What do you think the Steelers should do with Watt? Let him go or do everything they can to keep him? What do you think he should be paid? Comment below!

I'd hate to see him leave but his cap hits are going to end up being 25+ milllion per for most of his contract. That's a huge nut but we won't have a franchise QB for a couple of those so... I know one of the PG writers thought we'd get Watt for under $20 million per. I just can't see it but if it were to happen, that would be an ultimate hometown discount since most think he could approach $30 million per in value.

Watt is going to be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. The cap is going to go up and we won't have a franchise QB contract on the books when Watt's big cap years hit, even if Ben comes back in 2022, Watt's cap hit won't be really bad just yet.

NOT a chance in hell he hits free agency. If I had to pick a number it will be near $25mil / season. I also think there will be language similar to the Mahomes contract allowing termination VS cut cost(s).

Disclaimer here : I am no contract specialist but do own a LUXURY S10 that makes you feel like a winner before the race even begins.!!!

They will get a deal done, I would assume preliminary "where's your head at" discussions have already happened. I would say there is an off chance they can't work out the mega deal he has earned and he ends up getting tagged (10-20%) but more than likely he gets paid (80-90%). The Steelers have a history of being extremely loyal to key players they drafted when it comes to second contracts and Watt will be no exception.

The trade scenarios stuff are always fun to ponder in the long off season, but it ain't happening. Other teams would use him as bait for draft capital and do a complete rebuild from the ground up with an exiting franchise QB, which I am not saying is right or wrong...just different than how the stability Steelers approach things. We've got a young stud RB and a pretty competent D and I believe there is absolutely a zero percent chance of the Steelers trading him when it would put Coach T's "never had a losing season" streak in jeopardy.
They'll ride the D and run game and try to stay competitive rather than a complete rebuild for sure. A strong draft and solid free agency period are a must next year to keep the streak alive for Coach T, assuming it doesn't get blown this year.

I'd see if they can get that 5 or 6-year deal (longer than the Steelers typically do) and give him a larger signing bonus and maybe try to get the deal around $25 million per. If they pony up the big signing bonus, which they never do unless it's a QB, it might work. They usually stick around a one-year signing bonus but that would be an insult to Watt in this case. They will need to guarantee at least half of his deal upfront and more than likely almost the entire deal guaranteed. The guaranteed will probably need to surpass $100 million to even hope to bring him down on average per year. But, as Fiji mentioned, the Steelers have shown extreme loyalty to most of their big-time players and have paid them at or near the top of the pay scale.

Before anyone wants to rip my head off and assume I want to trade TJ, I don't! This is only for discussion, but it's an interesting scenario to ponder. Would I be upset that they moved TJ, hell yes, but two #1s +, you'd have to listen.
Saying that, when the dust settles, TJ is going to be one rich Steeler.

Highest paid defender. He deserves it (as much as someone can deserve it for playing a game). I think he will honor what he signs. The Watts play for money to some extent lets not kid ourselves (Judging by what JJ went for). But they will always give their all without question.

I wouldn't mind getting one myself. Watt is a beast and deserves everything coming to him. Hope he retires a Steeler.

If ever to break the non-spending silence, this is a GREAT goodest choice.

TJ seems totally legitamit in both on and off field activities. When his career twighlights he may wonder to another team for a short term paycheck but in the end he will be a STEELERS player.

I might break my spending silence as well because TJ's jersey is strong on the turning me to the dark side of nfl spending.

pay him, and hard to say about which QB we will take if we do all will depend on how intense the backup fight is, My concern for some of the current big names is their size Howell, Slovis, Corrall are under 6"3 and none have great athletic ability to extend plays like say Brees did, We would need to know how the OL looks after this season to say when what type of to invest from next years class, Only Tyler Shough has the size to just sit back from the gun and spread it easily. Haskins is 6"2 but with good mobility
Paty TJ whatever it takes to keep him in B&G via his prime years

I really hope things work out in GB with Aaron Rodgers...

If he leaves and they rid themselves of that hit....I think Green Bay makes a huge push for TJ being a "local" kid and all...

Also---why would he want to stay in Pittsburgh....especially when Ben is gone and they have no shot at nothing for some time..

Then again---how about a Rodgers for Watt trade? Hmmmm?

BIG pass on rodgers.

TJ isn't going anywhere. GB has zero chance as we will sign him long term and TJ wants to be a STEELERS player.

I guess anything is possible in AMERICA but in this case I don't see it happening

Why would he want to go to Green Bay without Rodgers where they have no shot at winning?

The nearest Steelers bar.
As for the second option, waiting until the season is over to franchise tag Watt instead of a long-term contract is much less of a possibility. The reason for this is the Steelers do not negotiate contracts after the summer until the season is over.

I love it when made up rules force people or organizations to do stupid things.
