The Pittsburgh Steelers 2021 draft picks made their mark in Week 1. That included C Kendrick Green, OT Dan Moore Jr., RB Najee Harris, P Pressley Harvin, TE Pat Freiermuth, and the surprise player of the game, DB Tre Norwood.
Norwood got the start in the slot for the Steelers and made some plays, totaling 80% of the total snaps for the game. For a player taken in the 7th round of the NFL Draft, you don’t normally expect much for that player’s first season, but Norwood has already proven that he’s a special case, seeing as how he’s already come out in Week 1 with the starting defense, and absolutely held his own against a loaded group for the Bills.
Green and Moore, like the rest of the offensive line, struggled early in the game, but that’s expected for a new group up front for the Steelers. But in the Steelers 2nd half comeback, these young guys answered the call and paved the way as the Steelers would total 229 yards in the 2nd half, leading to 3 scores that would bring the Steelers back.
Harvin had 5 punts totaling 207 yards, including 2 punts inside the 20. Pressley helped flip the field early in the game as the offense was struggling. Pressley would have a shank punt that would set the Bills up in really good field position, but was bailed out by a TJ Watt strip sack. Pressley would also have 3 key holds for Chris Boswell to seal the game for the Steelers.
Harris and Freiermuth had a very quiet first game in the NFL, but as the offense got better in the 2nd half, so did Harris. After a quiet 8 yards rushing in the 1st half, Harris would finish with 45 on the day and 1 reception for 4 yards. Freiermuth would have a big 24-yard catch that would lead to a field goal.
Overall, I think the Steelers were very happy with the impact from the rookies in a hostile environment against a team that has some really high expectations. Just like the Steelers, we are excited to see what these guys can do in Week 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
