CSN New England's Tom Curran reports the Texans are on the verge of acquiring Patriots QB Ryan Mallett.
Per Curan, a deal "may soon be done." If it seems out of nowhere, it shouldn't. New Texans coach Bill O'Brien was the Patriots' offensive coordinator when they made Mallett the No. 74 overall pick of the 2011 draft, while Houston reportedly reached out to the Pats earlier this offseason. Heading into the final year of his rookie contract, Mallett has attempted just four regular-season passes. He's never been particularly impressive in the preseason, but it's not always easy for back-up signal callers to stand out in exhibition games.

Watch the Pats throw in enough picks to get Clowney. LOL

I had Mallett as my second best QB in 2011 going to the Vikings and only Cam going #1 as being better. He has been lost behind Brady in NE ever since. Now, if the Texans could get him for lets say a 4th and sign him to an incentive laid cap friendly deal it would be a nice trade for Houston. Mallett has an NFL arm with strength and accuracy. He's not fleet or foot but I doubt he runs a lot in BOB's offense.

What they giving up? Hmmm I'd say a 3rd, a late round pick and maybe one of their current QBs
Round 1, Pick 1 (1)
Round 2, Pick 1 (33)
Round 3, Pick 1 (65)
Round 4, Pick 1 (101)
Round 4, Pick 35 (135)
Round 5, Pick 1 (141)
Round 6, Pick 1 (177)
Round 6, Pick 5 (181)
Round 6, Pick 35 (211)
Round 7, Pick 1 (216)
Round 7, Pick 41 (256)

Current HOU QBs.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and T.J. Yates

I never liked Mullet. If I were the Texans I would take Clowney and then find a QB in the 2nd round. I also would never trade with the pats*.

He's thrown 4 passes in the regular season, why would he be worth more than a 5th round pick? Even that may be too high.

I wouldn't give a 5th. Mostly because there are younger, cheaper, more talented QBs in this draft.
