Steelers HC Mike Tomlin admits staff dropped the ball on defensive gameplan

Defensively, the Pittsburgh Steelers were completely outmatched by the Los Angeles Chargers last week. This was due in large part because the defense missed three of its four best players. The absence of safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, cornerback Joe Haden and linebacker T.J. Watt made the defense a shell of its former self.

Having said all that, it did seem somewhat confusing how the coaching staff seemed to make no adjustments to the game plan with all these backups on the field. This was a detail not lost on head coach Mike Tomlin and when he addressed the media on Tuesday admitted this was a misstep by the coaching staff.

“We probably should have done some things differently, out of our personality,” Tomlin noted. The most notable thing that stood out to me was the lack of blitzing. It’s easy to just rush four when you have T.J. Watt out there but without him, the regular pass rush lacked punch.

I had my problems with the offensive gameplan but generally when you score 37 points you should win.
Looked kinda like our last three playoff games.

When I don't have to read appology press conferences from Coach Tomlin,........then I think he will finally be getting it..!!!

This is one of the BIGGEST complaints said by many........... failure or to slow to make adjustments.

Lets hope Coach Tolin can 2-STEP a little faster in the future.

I try not to rag on our HC because of the many missing pieces Sunday night, but LAC had their way with our D. It was frustrating and embarrassing to watch. Luckily, the LAC D was almost as bad as ours and gave us a chance in the 4th q.

That's what happens when you live in the "next man up" bullshit rhetoric and don't make adjustments. Sure it sounds good to say something like that but any moron (well almost any moron) can see there is no "next man up" for TJ. But I guess Tomlin is still learning.

This now confirms my theory that while Mike Tomlin may be physically present on the sidelines, he is lost in a reverie 90% of the time. How can you stand on the sideline as an NFL Coach and watch the pressure never get to Herbert, and not walk over to the Defensive coordinator and tell him to start dialing up controlled blitzes. How do you not go over to the Defensive line Coach and have him stress gap integrity. It was so frustrating!!!

I remember the year Ben was out. Tomlin said he calls the defense differently with Ben not playing. Logic would say you would call the defense differently with 3 starters out. and you would call the offense differently with 3 defensive starters out. wish he would have thought about this before the game not after.

Rinse repeat with this team. I guess last week because it was a different person calling please everybody was confused. As for Devin bush, they love his availability. Tomlin’s a ******* joke

Just tell him he got promoted to press secretary for the Steelers. That’s a job he should be in, media relations

They don't do **** when it comes to in game changes. Well other than whatever the hell the offense did in the 4th quarter to start scoring. Yeah do more of that.

To me the coaches should be teachers first and foremost. Fundamentals constantly. Then like field generals dissecting your opponent. Plan A, Backup Plan B, and throw everything and the kitchen sink Plan C.

Takes actual work and planning. No ego, so you can say well my idea isn't working, my assumption was wrong Plan B here we go.

There's nothing wrong with being unpredictable, just don't be stupid. In fact the Steelers have become so predictable they've made it easier for other teams to play defense against them.

I’ve never made it a secret how I feel about this guy as a HC. I think he has been made to feel far too comfortable in his position and therefore the arrogance, stubbornness, and overall complacency has long set in. Very little accountability with Art who thinks he would be doing his father a disservice and show a lack of respect if he terminated Tomlin. There’s that bond that this guy was essentially hired by his father Dan.
Tomlin walked into a perfect scenario in 2007 with a high quality roster complete with a franchise young QB not even near his prime with a SB in his pocket already.
He had two very excellent coordinators who essentially ran the show offensively and defensively so all Tomlin had to do was build a rapport with the team, learn the Steelers way and with Colbert, keep the shelves stocked.
Early success went to his head and the arrogance and stubbornness reared it’s ugly head. He started thinking his way was the the only way and therefore the revolving door with offensive coordinators and the pushing out of Labeau.
Then we have the non losing seasons which can be very misleading. You sprinkle in some 8-8 seasons and 9-7 seasons and wella, non losing season record continues.
Keep in mind all this with a franchise QB, generational talent in AB and Lev Bell, players like Martavis Bryant, Emmamul Sanders, Mike Wallace, Pouncey, DeCastro, Ramon, Troy, Minkah, TJ, Harrison, and on and on.
The best we can do from 2011 thru 2021 is a few playoff appearances with only four wins, that’s pathetic.
He should have been put on notice after the 2018 home playoff loss to the Jaguars due to him and the team looking ahead to the Pats. Hell, some of the minority owners could see it then and wanted him gone.
I just keep waiting for him to unleash hell but all he seems to unleash is more of his bs.
Someone put it well the other day on one of the sports talk shows. He’s not a players coach but a coach who can get players.
Once he gets them, he seems to screw that up too. LaGarrett Blount, Melvin Ingram, James Harrison who was here but had issues with Tomlin, Derek Watt signed as FB but not part of a Tomlin offense, one of the best FBs in the game at the time John Kuhn whom he refused to use because a FB is not part of his plan so Kuhn went on to star for GB.
I’m sorry, the guy is extremely overrated, and has been a creation perpetrated by the Rooney’s to re-enforce the Rooney rule.
No, before anyone accuses me of being racist let’s stop right there. If Tomlin didn’t repeat the same stupid mistakes over and over, was better at clock management, game preparation, in game adjustments, challenges, developing young players, not overlooking inferior opponents, I would be one of his biggest supporters. I don’t give crap what race he belongs to, that’s ignorant.
Look what he recently said about having to have a veteran QB and never wanting to start with a rookie QB. If that’s not an indictment of his coaching abilities I don’t know what is.
That didn’t stop Cowher having to go with a rookie in 2004 when Ben replaced Maddox in the second game of season at Baltimore.
Nah, that’s BS! The guy will never lead this team to a SB and never develop a young QB.

And if you read/listen to every opponent post game or after game articles...that is mentioned. They are shocked the Steelers did that...They saw Steelers doing same thing over and over....They realized the D played the exact same on every similar alignment...They expected the Steelers to attack (fill in Blank) weakness, glad they didn't....Didn't change playbook or play calls for injuries or back up players including QB (only Steelers do that)... They always know when the Steelers are running or passing....Several this year have already said they recognize the jet sweep and TE pitch Screen.

Tomlin has said before, adjustments? we stick to our game plan! Yeah, like killing Naj but not giving a hat to McFarland cause the other 2 play on ST. So what, add one of the DB's they are used to chancing plays anyway. His boy Snell is way below the line.

Other teams JOKE about the Steelers and hope Tomlin is retained.

Schobert - guy played on the Browns and Jags and HE has to comment that practice needs to be more serious from top to bottom.

Hate them or not, but when you can hit in Baltimore, they hit in practice. Steelers like the convoy of running next to guy with ball trying to rip out and escort for another 10-15 yards. Tackling is taught and practiced. Game planning/watching film is taught and practiced. Practice is repetition of plays until right. Belicheat used to make even Brady stay late until certain plays were run perfect each time.

As for the Steelers identity or scheme? I just don't think they have one! The Defense is about Watt and Cam getting there and hoping that Haden can keep his guy in front of him, Sutton and/or Minka are there to make play. Why call plays when the scheme is so bad! Tomlin Tampa 2 and 2 DL sets just don't work , but they don't see it. Easiest zone to pick apart by any professional QB. Blitzburgh is long gone, over load blitzes are gone, ILB blitz is gone, and the Hilton corner blitz left with him. On offense they are putrid and have been since day 1 of Tomlin. Does not matter who the coordinator, once MT is involved things change. I have heard Haley many times tread lightly on Sirius about Tomlins influence on game plan and play calling. The coaches don't just call the wrong plays, the draw up poor schemes and plays that make them look worse at times. Way too much talent over the 17 + years of this guy to not be more successful. OH, I am sorry he is average Mike with never a losing season. But most teams play for division, playoffs, and THEN chance at SB, MT wants to make sure he does not have a losing season and make his excuses and rinse repeat into the offseason.. HE has become one of his own Clichés'

So many good comments in this thread. I know a lot of people praise Tomlin, but what steelhurt said here is FACT. Look at that list of top-shelf talent. And with Ben in his prime. That look and gesture by Ben in the last game said to me, "What the hell, this isn't working." I think he's very frustrated and rightfully so.

Out west here, there are obviously fans of teams more local. One of my best friends is a Chargers fan and thinks I’m unreasonable about being frustrated with Tomlin. I try and be thoughtful and think maybe we are spoiled compared to what he’s been through as a fan. But I really think if you watch every game and eat/sleep/breathe our team people would realize the national media put a spin on Tomlin that really make people think he is second coming of Vince Lombardi. I also concur I promise it don’t have a damn thing to do with skin color. I want accountability and results, not catchy phrases and cliches. Remember the movie “The Program” when Halle Berry’s character chastises Omar Epps for trying to sound smart by using ridiculous words in sentences? I think of that scene every time Tomlin talks. I’m ok if Tomlin continues to be our coach but when “the standard” is playoff wins and at least making a run at the super bowl is what is expected, .500 seasons just aren’t that acceptable…..even if they might be to a Chargers fan 😉

Same. I'd love to have Tomlin and his wife over for a cookout. Hell, I'm thinking of making her turkey recipe tomorrow on Steelers.com. My opinion is that he's just stubborn as hell and needs a kick in the ***. Being stubborn isn't a bad thing, but when you refuse to change your way of thinking when things don't work, that's when I have a problem with it. And obviously, the guy is not a complete dummy.
