After the Pittsburgh Steelers suffered losing Devin Bush last season, there was plenty of playing time to go around and the Steelers decided to shop for a reliable veteran presence to help fill the void. Last season the Steelers made a sneaky trade with the New York Jets in hopes of bolstering their depleted linebacker corps. Back in early November of last season, the Steelers acquired Avery Williamson for a future 5th round pick, and in hindsight, this was not a bad deal at all.
Williamson can be a tacking machine when he gets into a groove and there’s no downside in keeping him around, seeing as he’s about as solid as a player can get at his position can get when it comes to defending the running game. The former Jet and 5th round pick of the Tennessee Titans is no stranger to seeing 100 tackles a season and last season was no different as he combined for 111 tackles.

The Steelers used Williamson primarily on third down where he has thrived throughout his career and keeping him around could pay dividends as the season progresses in 2021. The main concern at this point in the offseason would be getting a deal done and how the Steelers factor Williamson into their defensive game plan once Bush comes back. It’s not likely Williamson would sign an extension much longer than a year or two, but his reliability is incredibly valuable considering he has hardly missed any playing time throughout his six year career.
