REPORT - Steelers Among 9 Teams Interested in Tyrann Mathieu

Before the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Mitchell Trubisky we went through the daily stories of the Steelers being connected to each quarterback that's ever played in the NFL. Now we've moved onto the point of the off-season where the Steelers are connected to every decent safety on the market, and with that comes a daily report on Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Now we know Mathieu received at least one phone call from Mike Tomlin. Mathieu confirmed that on Monday during a podcast interview. But we found out on Thursday that there is potentially 9 other teams that are interested in his services.

According to ESPN reporter Jordan Schultz, the Steelers along with the Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, Las Vegas Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens.

That is nearly 1/3 of the entire NFL. No surprise because Mathieu is a very good safety. Where ever he goes his teams win. With him on the roster teams have never won less than 11 games. That's a pretty impressive stat considering he spent a year in Houston, and was drafted by Arizona. We know why the Chiefs won during his time in Kansas City. The interesting names on that list that Schultz gave were the Ravens, and Saints. Both of those teams just gave massive deals for safeties. The Raiders just signed Duron Harmon who was presumed to be a starter, but would move to a depth piece if they could get Mathieu. The Cowboys just re-signed Malik Hooker, and Jayron Kearse who are both slotted to be starters this season.

While 9 seems like an awful lot, it is probably fair to say that a lot of those teams are only interested if he's coming on a one-year cheaper than his value contract. It would also be fair to say the Steelers could be one of those teams.

The latest reports still have his valued contract near 15 million per season. With Minkah Fitzpatrick likely getting a contract extension before Week 1, there is a very low possibility that they are going to be willing to come to that number. They would likely be players around 10 million per season. Which probably still puts them in a better position than some of those teams listed. Mathieu talked recently about wanting to join a team with strong leaders. The Steelers could provide him with that on the defensive side of the ball with TJ Watt, Cam Heyward, and the already mentioned Fitzpatrick as his counter part on the back end.

The Steelers announced the re-signing of safety Karl Joseph on Thursday. That signing doesn't seem to figure into any of their plans to still find a starting safety. Joseph is largely a first round bust, and spent all of last season on the Steelers practice squad are failing to make the Raiders 53 man roster out of training camp.
