History Of SteelerNation.com

All the way back on August 5, 1999, SteelerNation.com was born during the late-1990s internet boom, when fans everywhere craved real-time NFL and Pittsburgh Steelers news. Message boards were exploding across the web, and Steelers supporters were no exception.

In 1999, the Steelers were struggling with Kordell Stewart at quarterback, and fan frustration was boiling over. On the team's official message board, passionate (and sometimes heated) discussions led to heavy moderation, post removals, and even bans for outspoken members.

Fed up with the restrictions, a young David Fair decided enough was enough. He registered SteelerNation.com and launched an independent forum where fans could talk Steelers football freely—no "ban hammer." The original SteelerNation experience was born as a true fan haven.

Steelers fans from across the country quickly joined, turning online connections into lifelong friendships. Members traveled from all 50 states for in-person events, creating a real sense of family. Over the years, SteelerNation absorbed communities like SteelerWatch and welcomed fans from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's closed forum.

For over a decade, the forum thrived as a cornerstone of Steeler Nation. Then, the rise of social media and platforms like Reddit in the 2010s shifted the online landscape, drawing many users away from traditional message boards.

Enter Justin McGonigle, who recognized the changing digital world. As owner and leader since 2015, Justin modernized SteelerNation.com—evolving it into a full-featured news hub with breaking Steelers updates, rumors, in-depth analysis, stats, scores, social media presence, and an official app. These additions helped sustain traffic and keep the community alive, blending timeless forum discussions with today's fast-paced fan experience.

Justin founded the Steeler Nation news site in 2015, and his passion for football has not only fueled his fandom but has also fostered lifelong friendships that remain a cornerstone of his life today. His efforts to keep SteelerNation alive turned into an adventure that he never imagined. 


Brandon (also known as B-Wall), wears many hats at SteelerNation.com, including Editor-in-Chief. He bleeds black and gold, and currently resides in sunny Los Angeles, CA.

Parker's coverage combines journalistic integrity with a lifelong love for the Black and Gold, offering readers fresh insights and a voice that truly understands the heart of the fan base. 



As the Lead Writer at SteelerNation.com, Anthony provides in-depth analysis and comprehensive coverage of the Steelers. With a degree in Journalism from West Virginia University, he brings a strong editorial background and a deep passion for football to his work.

Reigning from James Madison University, Brogan delivers in-depth analysis and coverage of the Steelers, bringing fans the latest news and insights daily.



Matt graduated from THE Ohio State University in 2016 and has been writing on sports for close to a decade. He wants to continue to share his love and knowledge for the game of football with the best fan base in the country.
