Watt Wins AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Despite missing all of the preseason with a hamstring injury, T.J. Watt proved he’s gearing up for an impressive sophomore campaign after a dominant performance in the Steelers week one tie against the Cleveland Browns.

Watt recorded four sacks and 11 total tackles, with eight of them being solo tackles and five and a half being tackles for loss.  Then, with only 13 seconds left on the clock in overtime, Watt blocked what would have been the game-winning field goal for the Browns.

Watt’s performance in the season opener earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the first time he has won the honor in his career.

In his weekly press conference head coach Mike Tomlin said of Watt’s performance, “I am not surprised that he had an impactful game. It was schematically set up for him to have an impact game, and he did.”

Watt would go on to say about the defense, “We’re going to keep going and and keep getting better.”

Steelers fans hope the same as the team heads into the tough week two home opener against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
